"MSFS DarkStreets" - Looking for testers!

Featured Replies

Hello-

In search of more realistic night flying, I've put together a scenery package, "MSFS DarkStreets", to remove street lights from rural areas in MSFS. As of now, I have builds for both 2020 and 2024, covering all of Mexico, US, and Canada. I am still making tweaks, hoping for a (freeware) public release within a couple weeks. I'd like to get more folks in to test it first, though. Please respond here if you're interested and I'll send you a link to the discord we're using to coordinate testing.

Important to note!: Due to a LOD bug in the current version of the 2024 sim, this only affects the immediate area around your aircraft. Asobo has the bug logged and it is in their backlog to fix. Who knows when that will happen... 🙃 2020 has no such issues and works as expected out to the horizon.

kiwikat is improving this but here's a few general comparisons to what this is actually doing.  And yes it works perfectly in 2020 (one of those rare things I'll admit lol) - my shots are in 2024 thou

Oh, that's great and really needed! Thank you for your efforts - and hopefully, you will be doing some European countries as well. 🙂  Although there are some countries here, where the highways actually have streetlights.

Best regards,
Holger

I'm not flying often enough to be of any use as a tester, but all the very best with this. It is something that's been sorely needed for many years. Thank you for taking it on.

Surely not everybody was kung fu fighting.

I have very little to no experience on how things are in the U.S.

But in case you need someone to test and provide feedback on Europe, i am here.

How bad does it look on 2024 with this bug?  I'd be happy to test if it doesn't make my flying look too bad!

I can't think of anything more needed for MSFS at the moment.  That and the landing gear issue on AI aircraft.  Flying over the great planes and it all looks lit up like suburbia, so it would be great if we could get this sorted!  Well done!

If you’re flying low and slow it is fine, but if you are up more than a few thousand feet it’s probably suboptimal, until they fix the bug. If you’re high enough it won’t have any effect at all, since the sphere of effective LOD is above the ground. 😆

Fingers crossed they fix the bug soon. It looks great in 2020.

Distant street lights are baked into the ground texture in 2024, so I'm not sure how they could fix it?

The ones I am referencing with the bug are not baked in- you can see them disappear as you go forward and reappear behind you. They are light effects. They also acknowledged it was a bug and it is in their backlog. 🙃

The destruction of the dreaded sepia mask and rural roads not being lit up like christmas trees (except maybe in the Gulf, where they are), is the holy grail of night flying!

If you're still accepting volunteers I'd happily help you with this. Yesterday I took an pre dawn flight from Page to Grand Canyon and was irritated by the street lights running all the way along the road out of Page heading south. Its something that really needs fixing so good luck!

One reason i avoid a full-night flight is the unreal precision of repeating equidistant rural lights
