VR 2026 Where are we and what do you recommend?

I had the Quest 3, returned it. Pimax has better optics compared to the Quest 3. Everything is razor sharp, cockpit instruments, autogen, etc...The Q3 is lighter and more comfortable but looks softer and blurrier.

What kind of computer and gpu specs do you have? I heard that the pimax is pretty heavy on hardware. Also what kind of sweet spot do you find with the pimax vs quest 3

AMD 5830X

Nvidia RTX 3060

Win 11

This is indeed a high risk. I switched to VR several years ago, starting with an Oculus Rift S. My second headset was the HP Reverb G2 and currently I am happy with my Quest 3 in combination with an R

I did almost the same search and ended up with the Quest 3 which seems to be most mature one  with its accessories , apps, price, addons, etc.(at the moment) Really happy with it. But needs to be sear

My rig is a i5 13600 and a 5070TI. I had a Quest 3 and replaced it by a Pimax Light and the difference is abismal. The PL shows much more sharp graphics when correctly configurated but it demands better hardware. . The Quest as it is a standalone headset is better suited for games in general as the PL is for simulators

That's similar to my rig (12700k 64gb ram and 4080).

Imo we really need the highest end hardware to have a no compromise experience. I really hate turning down settings only to look through a telescope at my cockpit. I have a Reverb G2 but the clarity is just okay. I've heard the pimax or aero is better but you need way more cpu and GPU to run that. At this point you'd need to spend 10k on a system including tht headset. It's just not worth it. I rarely fly VR anymore. I've had some fun flights but it's always a compromise on mid tier systems like we have. Especially with SU5, where vram consumption is much higher than in su5.

I spent around 5k for my system incl. 64 GB DDR5 Ram, RTX 4090, Ryzen 7800X3D CPU and Pimax Crystal Light. I have uploaded numerous screenshots showing 60-80 fps with high-ultra settings, using DLSS in Quality mode. Can't imagine ever going back to 2D.

AMD 7800X3D, Windows 11, Gigabyte X670 AORUS Elite AX Motherboard, 64GB DDR5 G.SKILL Trident Z5 NEO RGB (AMD Expo), RTX 4090,  Samsung 980 PRO M.2 NVMe SSD 2 TB PCIe 4.0, Samsung 980 PRO M.2 NVMe SSD 1 TB PCIe 4.0, 4K resolution 50" TV @60Hz, VR: Pimax Crystal Light + HP Reverb G2 @ 90 Hz, Honeycomb Bravo Throttle Quadrant, be quiet 1000W PSU, Noctua NH-U12S chromax.black air cooler.

60-130 fps. no CPU overclocking.

very nice.

I have 5800X3D cpu and 4070 (12 GB) GPU. I do not have to turn down settings to run msfs2024 in my PImax Crystal Light. I use the full headset resolution in Pimax Play (100%). In msfs I set anti alias to DLSS Quality and Overall Graphics to High End. (there is a DLSS "Super Quality" and DLAA" but I can't run the sim well enough using those, so I stick with Quality. And I can't run msfs Overall Graphics at Ultra, so I use High End and increase the two LODs from 100 to 130. I see way too much performance reduction in TAA anti alias compared to DLSS, so I choose DLSS.

5800X3D, RTX4070, 600 Watt, one or two 1440p 32" screens, 64 GB RAM, 4 TB  PCle 3 NVMe, Warthog throttle, VKB NXT EVO stick, Honeycomb Alpha yoke, CH quad, 3 Logitech panels, 2 StreamDecks, Desktop Aviator Trim Panel. Crystal Light VR.

Hardware demands of the Crystals is going to depend on which flavor you get, but all of them are pretty hungry. I have a Crystal Light, and my 3070Ti could not run 2024 without the graphics settings turned down so low that it blurred out the gauges to unreadability.

I had to upgrade graphics cards and now I have more GPU than I technically need for the Crystal Light but that's because I'm hoping it's still good enough for the next VR set I get, which may well be a Crystal Super if they don't come out with something better. I don't necessarily need the higher resolution of the Super but I'd sure like that horizontal field of view increase.

At any rate, despite claims on Pimax's website, I probably wouldn't consider one unless I had a 4080 at minimum.
