MSFS 2024 Night Lighting Downgrade? Huge P3D-style light

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I’m noticing a really annoying issue with the night lighting in MSFS 2024, and it affects all exterior lights in general (nav, strobe, landing, etc.).

Even under normal clear flight conditions, the lights create a giant, solid, oversized glowing halo or "orb" around them. It doesn't look natural at all. Honestly, I feel like the lighting in MSFS 2020 was much more realistic and blended beautifully with the atmosphere. This current effect reminds me of the old Prepar3D (P3D) days where light textures looked like big stamped circles.

Does anyone know a way to tweak or replace these light sprites? Is there an edit in the configuration files or an existing community mod to make these halos much smaller, sharper, and more realistic?

Any help or workarounds would be highly appreciated! Thanks!

Unfortunately I don't think there is a way. They need to adjust it. It is yet another one of the basic things they simply cannot get right.

Rob (but call me Bob or Rob, I don't mind).

I like to trick airline passengers into thinking I have my own swimming pool in my back yard by painting a large blue rectangle on my patio.

Totally agree. These guys just broke what they got with 2020. Now we are back in FSX/P3D days with the lightings.

Until they fix this mess (again...) then I refuse to even fly at night;

I was thinking that just last night, the runway and taxiway lights all have a star shaped glare to then, it might look like that way on a YouTube video but completely unrealistic to the real world.

That part of lighting is annoying yes but the overall look at night, to me, is pretty realistic.

Everyone should also get DarkStreets which triea to emulate darker rural areas as you fly along.

I rather like those "star shaped" lights. I do not generally fly at night, but the city and street lights look OK to me from the air at dawn or dusk. There may be a few too many country roads with street lights, but it does not really bother me. Certainly not as much as warped PG buildings or geometric shapes for trees 😉

Downgrades is the name of the game... how else can they sell us the new MSFS 2028? 😉 But at least the rest of the night is pretty good (for now) with some addons im using making the country side sparse as it should be
