Are we on the road to extinction?

Featured Replies

I don't think we'll go extinct. The world population is projected to peak at around 10 billion around 2050, I believe, and then slowly fall from there.

We're over 8 billion now, so not too far to go. It's my opinion that a sustainable world population would be around 3-5 billion.

There are some areas which are experiencing serious demographic decline due to a high percentage of elderly population and low birth rates. Asia and Southern Europe are among the worst. This puts a huge strain on resources as there are fewer and fewer young people to perform productive work and more and more old folks who must be taken care of by the dwindling number of young people. It remains to be seen how this will play out in the near to medium term, but the prognosis is not positive IMO.

Africa remains the area with the highest birth rates, followed by Central Asia and Central America and Mexico, and that's where most of the population growth will come from. It's generally the poorest countries which have the highest birth rates.

This is why, IMO, many countries have encouraged and facilitated high levels of immigration, 1)to slow down or reverse their demographic decline, and 2)to import cheap labor.

I always speak for myself Dave. Seldom for anyone else unless asked to.

Mankind has been destroying the planet in a plethora of ways. Clear cutting timber in our forests and clearing land and wetlands for industry, cities and agriculture. Polluting our air and water. Neglecting the needs of animals native to this planet by destroying so much of their habitat.

We seem to be an experiment gone wrong.

So that's how we end up? Chopped bacon for an omelet?

Young Charles... can I just say how happy it makes me that you have become exSTINKed. Please tell us all how you achieved this deodorizing feat.
