Overclocking for FSX
SlickNick replied to paulyg123's topic in System Hardware: PC | MOBO | RAM | CPU | HDD | SSD | PSU etc
Sounds to me like the tech doesn't know what he's doing. The 990X's can easily hit about 4.3 with a little voltage. He probably just left all the voltage settings on AUTO. Hell, I've got an E8500 stable at 4.5GHz! -

Dazz, no one opens 51 apps at the same time, but it was done to showcase how an SSD is leaps and bounds faster than a conventional drive. Onboard RAID controllers work great, an add-on card is not required at all. -

Maybe he just watched it for the awesome soundtrack? ;) -

Not my opinion. There are benchmarks a plenty to support it. Have you personally tried an SSD yourself? I think not, or I'd bet my next paycheck you'd be singing a different tune. It's not just boot time, it's EVERYTHING that happens faster. Need I say more? : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T_Jz7IMwBt4 -

RAID 0 doubles you chance of a failure rate, although I've been using 0 for over a decade now and have never had a failure. Still, keep all important files on a standalone drive, programs like FS that can be reinstalled easily will benefit from a RAID 0 setup. 2 1TB drives in RAID 0 will just show up as a single 2TB drive once setup in your BIOS. A PCI-E raid controller is not required if your motherboard has an onboard RAID controller already, which most do. Hard drive performance nearly doubles in a RAID 0 setup, there are more than enough benchmarks and tutorials on the web to inform you. You need to start with two identical CLEAN drives for a Raid setup, you can't just add a drive as you please. -

People need to stop looking at SSD's in terms of price per GB. Think price vs. Performance. I have $60,000 to spend. I can get a diesel 1 ton that can haul a sh*tload of stuff, or a Corvette. The corvette is WAY faster, but won't hold nearly as much. To get the best of both worlds, I run my OS on the SSD so the things that I really need are blazing fast, and my big stuff goes on the RAID array, so I have tons of storage. Problem solved. -

It's not just windows booting, that is such a TINY part of it. Everything will run faster. Time savings with fsx like I mentioned before are not worth it. It's all about having your root drive on the SSD. Why get a 1TB drive? Two 500 GB drives in raid will be twice as fast........ -
How to upgrade?

Your system will be fine. My reccomendation: 1. Download new motherboard and chipset drivers from the manufacturers website. 2. Reboot computer in safe mode (this is key!) uninstall current drivers for motherboard, chipset, and any utilities that the mono manufacturer may have installed. 3. Shut down system, install new hardware. 4. Power up your new system, and install the files you downloaded before. 5. Reboot when asked, and enjoy your new setup! -

Never use the cd. Go right to the manufacturers website and download the latest. -

What controller are the G-Skills based on? I went for a Force60 as the sandforce controller has shown to be a better performer. -

You can leave everything and just remove and install drivers with the new setup. -

An SSD is not really worthwhile for your FS or Programs drive, a RAID 0 setup will work great for that, but it is BEYOND a good investment to have one for your windows root drive. A 60GB can be had for $130. More than enough space for windows and other stuff, and the performance is just amazing. I can load windows 7 completely in 8 seconds. Web browsing is smoother, emails open instantly, everything happens faster on the whole. Trust me, I'd make an SSD for your root drive a top priority, not just if I had money to burn. -
The case will come with the front panel cables, question is whether or not the mobo has enough headers for it. 4GB of ram is not enough IMO. 8GB will work well. Also, I go through displays like they're going outta style and a small LCD tv is a MUCH better bargain than a large monitor. Make sure the tv is 1080p.

Random reboots
SlickNick replied to BadKarmaPT's topic in System Hardware: PC | MOBO | RAM | CPU | HDD | SSD | PSU etc
Yup that's too low. I have a pretty much top tier 1000W PSU, and my OCCT test shows my 5V reading at 4.90. -
Maybe it's just my system, but at a complex airport, say FSDT Chicago, from the time I click "fly now" to the time I'm sitting there at the gate, ready to rock is about 30-45 seconds. That's not bad if you ask me. My FSX drive is a RAID 0 setup, but just standard 7200rpm drives. Therein lies another topic. Higher RPM drives improve seek times drastically, but when FSX has a few giant files to load instead of many small ones, I bet the real world FSX performance jump isn't as big as you'd see with some other programs.
