A little help with a possible vid card change, please...
Hi. Long story short, I've been having some troubles lately that I'm pretty sure have to do with a video card that's starting to die. The MB posts just fine, and stress tests are fine as well, but I'm getting these freezes and re-boots that I can't otherwise explain. So... 1. Can anyone help with maybe troubleshooting my vid card (GTX 580)? or 2. Can anyone suggest a worthwhile upgrade of the card IF I need to replace it, keeping in mind that I'm still on the 1366 socket (i7-950) and can't really afford to upgrade that much at this time? Thanks for any help y'all can offer... Matt

Flight School Recommendation?
Thanks! I'll check them out... I should have clarified - being an airline pilot is almost last on my list. I'm too old (45), and I would hate that lifestyle up one side and down the other. I'm a lawyer, and that's what I've been doing for about ten years now. Lawyering itself was a career change. Anyway, I had several thoughts here. First and foremost, I was thinking of trying to get into aviation law in some respect, and (just my opinion) you really need some actual aviation experience of some kind to be at all credible. I'll also add that I think I would like being an instructor if I have any actual flying ability. That wouldn't put much bread on the table I'm guessing, so it would really be a part-time thing. And if I were to actually get paid flying full time, I'd really like to fly 208's for Fed Ex or DHL, or something like that. Not counting on that happening, but it sounds like fun But really this is more about a long term goal to get into aviation law. That's what I meant by career change, really. If I could make a living flying, I'd leave lawyering in a heartbeat. But I really think I'm too old for that at this point. Thanks for the input Matt

Flight School Recommendation?
Can anyone recommend a good flight school in the Bremerton/Seattle area? We're moving there in about a month, and I smell a career change on the way. Thanks! Matt

Regretful purchases for FSX
PMDG 737 NGX. Wonderful, terrific product, but I don't have time to use it with (now) two small kids running around.

To Realair Simulations
Well, I recently put together a machine that ought to run FSX fairly well, and I'm in the process of ramping it up as far as addons go. I can't recall seeing this much positive feedback apart from one or two other products. Guess I'll have to get this one. Thanks for this thread!Matt

Flight Sim Commander Version 9 Review
The big question for me is whether it's worth it to upgrade from version 8. From everything I've heard so far, it doesn't sound like it. Comments welcome...Matt

How to configure ASA with FSBuild?

How to configure ASA with FSBuild?
Dingo383 replied to RPRIEVER's topic in The AS16 and ASCA | Active Sky | Active Sky Next | XPAX Support ForumHi. Just so I understand, with both ASA and ASV6.5 installed, ASA will update BOTH snapshots? I have the problem mentioned earlier where FS Build truncates the snapshot directory for ASA. Far as I can tell, I'd have to create a new user account and essentially start from scratch with everything on my client machine. But if I can just have FS Build use the ASV6.5 snapshot, problem solved, right?I hope? Thanks,Matt

A question for VATSIMMER's
Also, see the FAQ in that VATSIM link.Down toward the bottom of one of them is a small config file you can create and put in the root directories of your payware models (if any). FSInn will then ignore those models when rendering planes online. This was a huge performance saver for me. I could never figure out how to get FSInn to stop using my PMDGs, etc. This solved it.This should be it...FAQ #9

Autosnapshot Question
Dingo383 replied to Dingo383's topic in The AS16 and ASCA | Active Sky | Active Sky Next | XPAX Support ForumThanks for the response, Jim. Can I ask a follow up question that's kind of related? I'm using ASG to create autosnapshots for FS9. Call me names if you'd like, but in all these years I had no idea that ASG has replacement runway light textures. I like to use Nick's Lightfix for those lights, and now I see why the Halo.bmp file keeps getting overwritten. Is there any way to stop the autosnapshot process from incorporating ASG's lights? Or is there another workaround maybe? Thanks.Matt

Autosnapshot Question
When ASA makes autosnapshots using ASG, does it limit itself to the choices I've made as far as cloud texture settings? Thanks.Matt

ASA SP1 Cloud popping.
Dingo383 replied to Gavin's topic in The AS16 and ASCA | Active Sky | Active Sky Next | XPAX Support ForumSame here - different suppression ranges and always at normal time. And not that I know a darn thing about it, but in my case, things got really bad when I was going down the east coast, Boston to Miami. It was as though ASA kept downloading new weather every minute or so, judging by how often it was changing. I wondered if maybe it was looking for those virtual weather stations that FS9 can't create. Anyway, I'll keep flying as I have time, and if I see anything else worth commenting on, I'll post it here.

installing FS2004 on 2nd hard drive
I just did this recently. It eliminated my stutters. I still have slowdowns in heavy scenery and weather, but no stutters whatsoever. For me, that's a huge improvement.

ASA SP1 Cloud popping.
Dingo383 replied to Gavin's topic in The AS16 and ASCA | Active Sky | Active Sky Next | XPAX Support ForumSince buying ASA, I've been getting some cloud popping here and there, but tonight flying from Boston to Miami, it's been really bad. This is a pretty fresh install of FS 9.1. Every 30 seconds or so at times, a haze will pop in, clouds will pop out, then in, then change to a completely new look - meaning it looks like totally different weather loading up. Sorry I can't explain it any better. Also, when one of these changes happens, the plane itself (Level D) will lurch around, lose speed, then struggle to get back on course. This something more than turbulence.Anyway, that's what I'm seeing. And I'm using the settings listed earlier in the thread.Matt

Ram Question
Dingo383 replied to Dingo383's topic in The AS16 and ASCA | Active Sky | Active Sky Next | XPAX Support ForumHeck, I just found out how cheap it will be to put 2GB on this thing. So I'll do that, then upgrade next time I get a paycheck. Thank you sir!Matt H.

Ram Question
Apologies if this has already been answered somewhere. I'm wanting to upgrade to ASA from Active Sky 6.5 but I need to know something first. I recently switched over to a Wide FS setup, on which 6.5 runs just fine. The client machine is a somewhat older Pentium machine and only has 512MB of RAM, and at this point any money I can spare for hardware upgrades is earmarked for a new FS machine. I know this meets the minimum requirements of ASA, but I'm wondering if I'll have any performance problems. As I said, 6.5 runs well and I see no problems with updates over the network. I'm guessing that ASA will need to use the page file more, and I might very well be able to free up some of that RAM, but do you think the end result will be pretty much the same overall? Or am I looking at an endless string of OOMs? Aside from 6.5, I normally run FS Commander, and I'll soon be getting back on VATSIM (probably via Squawkbox). Sometimes I browse the web too, and so far I haven't had any memory problems or network slowdowns no matter what else I run with 6.5.Hope this isn't too stupid of a question, but I'm pretty new to this networking stuff. Thanks!Matt H.

Possible problem?
I've been having some bad performance problems with FS9 lately, most of which have been solved with a good defragging. But one thing remains. When climbing out of Chicago this morning, overcast and snow, I had some stutters. This was when I was up in the clouds - on the ground it was smooth as silk. Same again when descending into St. Louis, when I got to about 3 or 4 thousand AGL. I fired up Filemon and saw these:9:51:23 AM ASG.exe:3368 OPEN D:Flight Simulator 2004ModulesASGraphics SUCCESS Options: Open Directory Access: 00100001 And immediately following:9:51:23 AM ASG.exe:3368 DIRECTORY D:Flight Simulator 2004ModulesASGraphics NO SUCH FILE FileBothDirectoryInformation: trigger.datAnyone know what the heck this means? I looked in the modules folder and saw ASGraphics in there, so I don't understand the NO SUCH FILE entry.I think this is related to the stutter but I could be wrong. Any help is appreciated. Thanks for your time!Matt Hartley
