  1. Vista64 here with UAC off, but FSX installed on its own drive. Defender and other numerous services disabled as per Nick's suggestions in his tuning thread.
  2. Read through this guide from beginning to end - it'll get your PC and FSX set up to pretty much the best it can be for your hardware. Dont skip any steps.http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/Ya...?num=1208959973
  3. Have you got error reporting enabled, and have you set your system to not automatically reboot when there is a system error, so you can read the blue screen error messsage if there is one?Funnily enough I run XPx64 and get random rebooting issues too. I'm almost conviced its my RAM - my PC can run happily for days at a time, then out of the blue (pun intended), a blue screen error. I'm getting two new sticks of RAM today so hopefully I'll see if the RAM is the issue.
  4. Not really with FS9 no, 2Gb is fine. Go with Vista64 and 4Gb RAM if you're planning to run FSX in any way decently. 32bit Vista or XP can only handle around 3Gb RAM and you may experience Out of Memory (OOM) issues with big payware jets in complex scenery. You may want to post your entire system specs so others can advise you further. :(
  5. Nick's tuning thread has a guide to killing unnceccesary services:http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/Ya...?num=1208959973Not far down near the bottom of the first post in the thread.
  6. Run the FPS_Limiter_GUI file to run the program. You'll need java installed to run it: Download Java
  7. Yes - always do so because the new mobo will likely have many different components than your existing.Only time you dont need to re-install windows is when you're swapping the motherboard for an identical one, such as if your mobo dies and you get an identical replacement.
  8. Wow, someone found rabbit droppings in their cereal today huh? Or fell out the wrong side of bed and stubbed their toe?The F key to 'increase' FPS is to increase the LIMIT on FPS, not increase FPS overall - i.e. if you lock FPS using this utility at 25, you could increase that limit to 30 using the F key while the game is running. Pretty simple if you think about rather than rashly sit there and bash away at your keyboard with such replies...
  9. Nvidia all the way - their cards seem to be happier running FSX.
  10. As far as I know, with an LCD monitor, you can't stop this from happening, it will always stretch a 4:3 image to fill the 16:9 (or similar) aspect ratio of the screen. The only LCDs that dont do this are the TV ones which will show a square 4:3 image in the center of the screen undistorted.Have you tried experimenting with the WideViewAspect= setting in the fsx.cfg file? It can either be set to true, or false.
  11. I think this is what you're looking for:FSX Logbook RecoveryFile Description:This utility can be used to try to fix an FSX logbook that doesn't get appended with new entries anymore. If it succeeds in removing a corrupt entry you can write back the logbook, but only after a backup of the original has been made. Updated version that handles entries with multiple landings better. (Previous version had 931 downloads).Dowload from Avsim Library
  12. No. I think its due to the way FS9 style textures are dealt with in FSX SP2, which is why some FS9-ported-to-FSX add-on aircraft needed fixes post SP2 to correct missing textures and other issues.
  13. Are you rining FSX at the same resolution as your windows desktop? If youre running an LCD monitor, are you running FSX at its native resolution? And if running widescreen, do you have the WideAspect setting set to true in your FSX.cfg?
  14. Run through Nick's Windows Tuning Thread to make sure you've got your Windows system optimised fully for FSX.Then see the FSX Tuning Thread to optimise your FSX install. They should light a bit of fire under your system. If you're still unhappy, then you're going to enter the realm of Quad Core/maybe Overclocking probably. Your 8500 isn't the best card, and an 8800GT/9800GT would be better (theyre both the same card in reality with just different model numbers, depends which one you could get cheaper if you wanted to buy).
  15. The flashing actually gets really annoying after a while, and causes perf degredation/stutters when flying into BOS in a heavy payware jet, and when taxiing. Also in certain camera views the buildings half vanish. It's a shame because i loved the add-on airport for FS9 - one of the greatest freeware airports ever released IMHO.
  16. You could probably save yourself some money by going for 6Gb instead of 12gb - unless you're running apps on your rig that will make full use of all that RAM it'll just sit there looking pretty.I'm assuming you will be installing Vista64 or XP64 to take full advantage o the new system?
  17. Using FS9 scenery in FSX is a hit and miss affair, sometimes it works fine, other times you see graphical anomalies as you are here. You're better off looking for a 'true' FSX scenery for Portland.

  19. Just untick the Direct X 10 Preview option in FSX. If a game requires DX9 in Vista, then Vista just uses DX9 mode. It's able to fallback to DX9 automatically, and requires no user intervention, or seperate DX9 installation.
  20. Possibly a corrupt logbook? There is a utility to try and recover it here.
  21. It's only substantive to you, as I've said, you're the only one gnashing your teeth over it.I vote we agree to disagree on this. Our OEM tennis match has gone way off the original topic, and is serving no purpose other than eventually as another thread for the mods to lock. The OP has stated they will buy the OEM software no matter what the opinion. With that I say, "Over and out."
  22. One last time: Do you see Microsoft kicking up a fuss about it? No. Unless Microsoft considers there to be a licensing breach (which they don't, obviously), and reprimands the vendor accordingly, people will continue to buy OEM software from these vendors just as they have done for YEARRRRRSSSSSSS!The end. :(
