  1. To power up from cold and dark, you will need to start with the Electrical Power Up Supplementary Procedure, FCOM volume 1, SP.6.1. But note that as a pilot, you would very rarely ever encounter the aircraft in this state. Start with the Long Turn, or the Short Turn if you want the APU already running.
  2. Let's do some quick math. 2 full time developers at $150k/yr (incl benefits), 1 half time texture artist, 2 dedicated test engineers half time, 2 year development cycle, 1 FTE for marketing and administration, we're looking at about $1mn to $1.25mn in costs to develop a new version of the MD-11. Current market research, based on the popularity level of this forum, indicates the potential for 200 sales, wow! Of course this includes my purchase. At a suggested retail price of $79.99, PMDG would stand to make about $16,000 from sales of the new MD-11. For a small net loss of a measly $984k. Any wonder why they won't build it?
  3. This is great learning what everyone is most excited about. For me, this month was the first time simming in a year, and to mark the occasion I built a new system and installed P3D and XPX, a first time user of both platforms. For the short term, I anticipate spending most of my time with the NGX, but here is a roughly prioritized list of my top a/c preferences. P3D 737 77F C182 Q400 Lear 35A XPX 733 763 I like big jets
  4. It's been awhile, but my impression from reading the CVR transcript was that returning to LGA was not an option due to traffic. ATC cleared them with vectors a couple times to nearby airports, I think TET. The first thing Sully said was "QRH loss of thrust on both engines" and the F/O went to work while Sully flew the plane. There was precious little time in which to consider their options. They handled it masterfully. Hollywood can do what they like, but reading that transcript, all the drama happens within about 90 seconds.

  6. I've made some of the recommendations proposed here, notably reducing Vector settings to only major roads. However I still OOM with the NGX from SFO (FB) to LAX (FSDT) with NCA and SCA both active. I tried the same flight in the Mooney which I'm assuming consumes minimal VAS vs the NGX. On the ramp at SFO, I start with around 1400 MB of available VAS according to FSUIPC logging. This drops only slightly during flight to around 1200. However when I get near lax, VAS plummets to 600. Should I try any of the settings in FTX Central for NCA or SCA, will any of them save VAS? Any other thoughts? I'd hate to have to disable the regions altogether because they're so beautiful.
  7. Hi all, Is it possible to access the add-on scenery dialog box without first starting a flight? I'm finding I frequently need to change the scenery library settings before each flight. For example, to enable only the airports I intend to use for the flight and uncheck the others. Secondly, anytime I make changes in FTX Central, such as toggling Vector settings, changes to Orbx region settings, then I usually need to enter the scenery library to move my custom airports above the Orbx entries. But I can't figure out a way to access the scenery library from the Free Flight screen, which I have enabled to open at startup. Is there anyway to access the add-on scenery settings from this screen? Or do you still need to load a scenario before making these changes? Thanks!
  8. Well this is embarrassing. Last week I blew off an important meeting but of course I had a good reason. I was just shy of top of descent in the NGX heading into Denver. After all, sterile cockpit rules would not allow me to take a conference call. Alas, I lost a big contract as a result. What's worse is I was planning on that contract to pay for the new machine I just built for p3d! Let this be a lesson to all pilots. Enjoy yourselves, but not at the expense of the hand that feeds you! So how about a little commiseration? Anyone else care to share an embarrassing tale when a little too much simming caused your work performance to suffer?
  9. Interesting, I will try that. What's the easiest way to monitor VAS during a flight? I forget if FSUIPC can do it or if you need another program installed.
  10. Same as mine, except I got the Z170I Pro Gaming (the mini-itx version). I've used all the major mobo makers and ASUS has been my go-to for about the last 10 years. This board has been perfect for all my needs.
  11. Hi folks, Yet another OOM thread (sorry!) I'm hoping to find a checklist of best practices for reducing VAS that's up to date for p3d v3. I got greedy with my new install and pretty much maxed everything out so I'm not surprised I ended up with an OOM. So now I am wondering where I should start to nudge things back down to reality. I'm thinking clouds, vector, and road traffic are probably the 3 best places to start, but what would be the best way to get rid of the worst VAS offenders? NGX sp1d Departure airport: FB KSFO HD Destination: FSDT KLAX These are the only 2 add-on airports installed at the moment. ASN weather was active and quite a bit of cloud cover on approach at LAX. VAS warnings appeared around T/D, hit OOM about 10DME from runway 24R.   13. Hey NGX pilots, What are your thoughts/preferences for the pitch and roll cue on the display? Personally I tend to prefer the single cue. I find it easier to follow the flight director using the single cue because you can easily envision rolling the wings into shape. With the split axis, I never know what to do with the rudder. Which is more popular? It seems the split axis is more "modern"? But I don't see why. Curious what others think. Cheers!
  14. So I'm just putting the finishing touches on my newest FS build, one that will carry me through the next 3-4 years or so, and I have said goodbye to FSX, having finally jumped over to P3D. But before I disassemble the old system there is one last flight to make. I'll be ferrying my sweet MD-11 to the boneyard. Parting with this bird is no easy decision, but I don't want to maintain 2 Sims and no I won't consider circumventing the EULA. So here we go, one last time, westbound from Stansted. Yum
  15. Hi folks, Can someone provide a quick summary of the issues that have been surfacing? I just did a fresh install of FTX Global Base, Vector, openLC EU, NCA, SCA, and PNW, with the latest Orbx libs on a new build. I haven't seen anything awry yet but only a few quick flights to look around. What problems should I keep my eyes open for?
  16. For my SFO-LAX circuits, I followed several flights using liveatc and wrote down all the ATC instructions so that when I flew them I could "mimic" the same procedures in the sim. One day I'll actually try this out on vatsim! LAX Arrivals from the north are typically given the SADDE arrival and visual to 24R. The runway is 8926 ft, but you'll want to exit on taxiway Z which is about halfway down the runway. That means you really have to stick the landing or you'll be in for a long taxi!
  17. My longest flight was Honolulu to Cape Town, South Africa (PHNL-FACT). 10,000nm in the Alphasim B-1B. I can't remember how long it took, but cruise speed was around M0.98 A few times I've done a day's worth of SFO-LAX circuits in the NGX starting at 7am and lasting until about 9pm. Each flight is about 1h30m and with a turn time of 1h you can do 3 round trips (6 total flights) in the day. Great fun! Never gets old, as long as I'm in the pilot seat! As a passenger, it certainly wouldn't be as much fun
  18. Chris, how does Multi Crew Experience compare to FS2Crew, specifically the PMDG NGX Reboot version? I know MCE works with lots of other a/c, but would it be able to provide the same level of interaction as FS2Crew? I'll also add another add-on for consideration: EZDOK camera system. I haven't tried it yet but plan to try it out to see if I can do a good virtual walk-around with it. I do always struggle with the default cameras, especially the outside views.
  19. Since I'm pretty much in the same boat (last June was my last time simming), I'm making a similar list for when I'm able to build my system hopefully this weekend. Consider also the following: Navdata (eg. Navigraph), if you'll be flying with an FMS. Magnetic Variation update: Magdec.bgl. From http://www.aero.sors.fr/navaids.html. I'll be using win10 and have been looking for a setup guide. For win7, you can refer to NickN's guide but nothing similar exists for win10 (afaik). Other add-ons are similar to yours (Orbx, ASN, Rex). I'll be using p3d for the first time, might also try XPX. If all works out then I never have to go back to FSX!
  20. Rock on, everyone, and thanks for the advice. I am going with a 1TB Evo. I was planning to go 512, but with the new DC-6, I figure it's time to check out XP as well as P3D, so I'm making sure I have plenty of drive space.
  21. I see the Evo being used far more nowadays, but my last build several years ago the Evo was not reliable and went with the Pro. Are there any potential problems using the Evo drives for flight dimming where one would prefer the Pro?
  22. From tutorial page 97:  Disengage the autopilot by pressing Z or your joystick AP disconnect button twice. The trick is you need to press the disconnect button twice, about 1 second between clicks, to properly disconnect and silence the alarm.
  23. A week? Man, it's been 11 months for me. It's the usual story of middle age: work, kids, wife who considers planes the same as a city bus. Next week they're all going on holiday so I finally get my sim time. Naturally I'm planning to spend an obscene amount of money catching up on what I've missed out on in the past year.
  24. Vienna is out? Can anyone with 3.3 check FT's Copenhagen please? If not also Orbx's Oslo? If uk2000 airports are off the list for the time being, it would be helpful to know whether EKCH and ESSA are working.
  25. Poor choice of words on my part, "aggravating" is not appropriate. Rather a better word would be along the lines of "challenging". For all the reasons you cite I am immensely grateful for LM's pioneering work with p3d. I recall all too vividly the sadness when Aces was shut down and how the prospect of losing this sim was a real downer. Lots of quality choices still remain and I'm confident there will be a solution soon in the works for the best devs (like Gary at uk2000). As noted earlier this will not deter me from finally purchasing p3d this month. It just puts a slight damper on my enthusiasm: I had so looked forward to kmem to egss in the trip 7. If Stansted isn't in the cards this summer then Copenhagen or Oslo will be. Must adapt to the situation!
