  1. That was my understanding as well. Maybe there's something goofy in your default set up on the trike that makes the JS41 say it needs to get the instruments up. And, it shouldn't take 3 minutes all the time anyway. If I set them up, then turn off the avionics buses to start the engines and then turn the avionics back on, they reload in about 30 seconds or less as Dan suggests.
  2. Yes, that was just an example. From this morning it would be FIX/110/XX in your example. As for KIAD, I think there's a question about whether HYPER crosses into the no fly zone (plus I'm too low to use it). Ditto the transition at MULRR if P-40 is enlarged. That's kind of an issue for us Part 61 guys who don't want to get blown into pieces. But, yeah, its ostensibly, it's the same route. I get pushed down from cruise levels starting about LNP and there's a Victor airway that heads toward MULRR. That's what I'm on. If I file for a procedure, I don't get it. Also, some guys who run that sector aren't cool about east side transitions, which is no bueno for those of use going the KHEF. I find I only get a good route if a I file through AML (which I have, never, ever gotten), which is an transition to the GPS approach to the short runway.
  3. Thanks guys. I actually get this kind of instruction in my bugsmasher in real life all the time. (For Kyle's amusement, my most common one is: "After MULRR, Fly Heading 190") But both of you are describing what I have in mind. This is from memory, but here how this got me thinking about using the FMC like this: This morning, I was flying the MOXEE6 arrival to KPDX, which ends just south of the airport and has arrows going 280 and 100. Today, it would require me to then fly a 280 heading to go downwind for the 10 runways. In theory I could have done it for a specific distance and made a fix, that I got... But I was imagining a vector for sequencing and then the turn, (I don't fly online for a host of reasons.) so, I essentially wanted an endless line. I've seen the endless vectors in the STARs before, ( I think PHOG had one.) So, using my IRL example above, if I had MULRR in the FMC, I would type in MULRR/190, and then insert it below MULRR, it would create an endless line heading southish out of MULRR. (Kyle: essentially a downwind for 1L/C/R at KIAD, although that's how they get me to KHEF.) I'll have to try that.
  4. First, unrelated to my question: Ryan, awesome tutorial. I'll admit to not being a guy who does LOWI very often, but a great tutorial with a few tricks that I didn't know. So, here's a question I had (spurred by the fix work done in the tutorial): is thre a way to program a specific vector/heading into the FMC and have the A/P follow it in LNAV mode? For example, say you're on a STAR and you need to be vectored to the IAP. ATC says: "After [FIX], fly heading XXX." Now, of course you can just put the heading in the window and hit heading select when you get to FIX, but it dawns on me there has to be a way to draw a line on a heading that the LNAV will follow.Thoughts? Thanks.
  5. There is actually an apology from Robert in the release notes about that. They know that is annoying and are working on a fix. There's also the other work arounds. Frankly, I kind of stopped flying the NGX for awhile waiting for the SP. Flew a lot of J41 flights and even -GASP- a flight in the Queen. God that bird is fun every now and then.
  6. I somewhat disagree about the USB headset. I use to use one, but I switched to traditional micro plugs when I bought my new soundcard. If you are using MB sound, it doesn't necessarily matter. I also found that different headsets react differently with non-FS2Crew sounds. So as an example, one headset will leave the engine sounds on the speakers but the voices in the headset. MY current headset brings all sounds in the headset. (Which, while less realistic, I actually prefer, since it keeps the noise down and doesn't wake sleeping children.) But, Bryan is right, the USB headsets are essentially idiot proof. One thing that no one has mentioned: Do the voice training with your headset as you intend to fly. Windows 7 has decent speech recognition, but it isn't perfect, so I would buy the headset you want and then do the training.
  7. Thanks Michel! The vision in my head was something similar, with a wooden back but with ABS plastic sheets screwed on the front. I can get 1/16 inch for like $8 and 1/8 for like $13 from Amazon, less if I shop around. If you want to PM me with the design software link, that would be awesome. I'm thinking essentially a glorified trapezoid. Thanks a bunch. I'm finally getting to where I am ready to move forward after a couple of small boxes in project boxes.
  8. Michael, Very nice. I've actually been quietly working on an MCP and an overhead. I'm using interfaces from Groovy Game Gear, since I didn't feel like having the extra expense of importing equipment from the U.K. (I'm in the U.S.) The hold up (other than lack of time), has been inability to commit to a box design. What did you use to build the enclosure and face? I was going to buy some sheets of ABS and make something, but hadn't decided completely. I also have this dream of putting in a display that will show crz alt and landing alt, but I think that might be impossible. I at least want to include the dials for both. Thanks for the continued inspiration. As with you, I started thinking about this when I saw LINDA.
  9. Good perspective. I certainly became addicted to flying because of my childhood introduction to FS in all of its 10 by 10 grid sopwith camel glory. I remember reading an early review of it from a pilot who said he thought real flying was easier given the early limitations of graphics and controls. Now, 30 ish years later, I'm a licensed private pilot and airplane owner who still plays around with FS since I'm never going to be airline pilot and I enjoy the detailed add-ons. I'm not the target audience here either, but I certainly would download it and fly around Hawaii for free to try it... Not going on MS Live. I don't even do online with FSX. (Online flying groups tend to get annoyed when you use the "pause" feature while dealing with kids/wife/outside life...) If some 10 year old gets hooked on flight because of this "game", then I'm cool with that. The kids these days (shakes cane) do like online gaming - a lot. Most video games now are essentially nothing more than scripted tutorials so you can go online and play. So, if MS wants to push this into an XBOX Live kind of scenario, that makes sense even if us old-timers (removes dentures) are non-plused. Sounds like people do like the way it looks and runs, with the limitations already noted, so at least worth a few minutes playing around.
  10. I would buy an L1011. PSA had a bunch of those and I remember riding them a few times. Much under-appreciated. But, as much as those of us "in the know" love the MD-11, I've always been of the impression that it wasn't the world's biggest seller. That's pure speculation, but I think there's a question about how much of a market there is for "vintage" ish planes. And that's not just PMDG, I think that's everyone. Me, I love the J41 and MD11. I think a lot of simmers just want heavies, but I'm guessing. (And admittedly, I may be an unusual customer. I actually have no interest in the 777 - not because it won't be good, I'm sure it will be - but because I can't imagine flying it much.) The DC-6 and the DASH interest me. My suspicion is that the DC-6 and its sales will determine how many other "vintage" projects they do in the future. The L1011 kind of fits in that mold, I would think. So, who knows. As for the Airbus, I get the sense that a bus isn't near the top of the PMDG list of possible projects. But, from what I've gathered in these forums, there's people who think highly of the potential from FS Labs and their airbus. I know its a 320, but they might have a 310 sometime in the future. Worth watching, I suppose, if you're gung ho on an aribus.
  11. Ryan has said he would love to have the company do a CRJ or something similar, so you might get your wish some day.
  12. Huh, I didn't know this. You learn something every day. So, do PMDG's products with FMS and ETA calculations run off the FSX clock or real clock? I'm thinking the former since they seem to be pretty accurate.
  13. I use a headset for FS2Crew as well, but I turned the engine down. It isn't exactly a huge headache to go into the settings menue and raise or lower the engine sound. You don't even have to exit the sim to do it. Alternatively, turn your FS2Crew sounds way up and turn the overall sounds down (you know the windows volume control). That seems to work for me as well.
  14. I think Hungary has bigger problems than their national airline dying.
  15. Robert, I can't believe you shutdown so abruptly the guy who asked about the Dash. Is it even a current project any longer? Originally it was supposed to come after the NGX but before the 777. If that's no longer the case, then fine. But, if you're already announcing preview posts for the next project (777), and mentioning nothing about the Dash, it would reasonably lead one to conclude that it isn't on the schedule any longer. Just saying "there's nothing new" isn't necessarily the right answer to his inquiry.
  16. I thought you made that clear when you noted that the annunciator wasn't going on. I can't really help you, but I can say that I used to have this problem, but between the SP and using FS2Crew, they always go on now (at least the light does). If it were something where landing at too fast or too a slow a speed would stop them from deploying (which was my thought based on my experiences above), I would have assumed Ryan would have mentioned it as part of the logic of the program. But, that can't be it. If you think it's one of your add ons (like FSP), try a short flight without it. That's the best I got, sorry, man.
  17. I've never had an issue with the spoilers, and I arm at TOD. My memory is hazy, but I seem to recall that landing too fast doesn't let them deploy or something weird like that.But. can everyone who wants an SP2 to address an issue they have go up and re-read Ryan's first post in this thread? He will send you the files you need to make the fixes the SP2 would address. I don't have any major issues with the J41 and that is the primary bird I fly. I would hope they eventually get around to releasing the SP because it strikes me as something non-forum users out there might want, but he essentially told everyone that he'll send you the meat if you ask. I'm not really sure what more you could want immediately. Ryan, what is the CTD issue? I get CTDs from time to time in the J41 like any plane, but is there a speicfic "thing" I should look at vis a vis the FMS that would clue me in that the gauge would fix the issue?
  18. I'm a huge fan of turboprops too. I think the company has resisted the "light" label in the past because I think some of their earlier products like the Beech were "light", essentially revamped models of default planes. I think Robert has said the turboprops are not "study sims", like the fans because they don't have as much detail on the systems. And, it's priced accordingly. Personally, since I don't fly long flights that often, I would love to have a turboprop that had a full failure model and I would pay more for it. But, my sense is that the company thinks the demand for an $ turboprop is suspect. So they do the well-constructed, accurate $50 model, but you aren't going to be working emergencies, failures, etc., in them. (Having an engine fire is a type of failure, true, but I'm talking about a GEN failure or some sort of problem to work through like the Boeing products.) As for SP2, isn't that really mostly the bezel lines? I actually think the bird runs pretty well.
  19. Ken, Let me add to your list of "Good Lucks". I've been licensed for about 15 years, IFR for 10. Started simming with the first one. (Secret to FS1: Declare war by dropping bomb, not the other way around.)As you read above and have experienced, it's different. Looking outside is important. But, in some ways real flying is easier that way. I find trimming a plane way easier in real life because of the tactile feel of spinning an actual trim wheel as compared to a computer button. As for IFR, the hood (as opposed to "Foggles") makes me a bit quesy. I have probably 50 or so actual hours and no problem. Foggles, no problem. But, take me up for an IPC and make we wear a hood, and I might vomit. It's weird. It doesn't even have to be bumpy. Anyway, good luck and happy flying.
  20. Essentially these software pgrams just make a mirror of your old drive and then you replace new drive with old drive; from the computer's point of view its the "same". I have an SSD for by boot drive and a second SSD for FSX.
  21. What are they shipping, a manual? Those come from the printer directly, I believe. Plus, they won't necessarily respond to you unless you put your name on your post, as requested by the forum rules.
  22. Did them buy the ip or get a license from ms? In theory, they could both use the same ip under ownership and licenses.
  23. Weather, maybe? You inputting the exact weather from the same day? If the winds aloft are changing (and/or they aren't input right into the FMC), then you might get different numbers.
  24. I actually love the sound of the NGX, the landing thumps, and rattle of stuff while taxiing (among many others) is the best I've ever heard.
  25. I find the cockpit kind of dark at night in a cold and dark setting (insert various snarky comments about cold and dark being true here). But, it's so dark I sometimes have trouble finding the battery switch to get things started. But, I kind of assumed that was just a monitor setting of mine. So, OP, if that's what bothers you, try changing the monitor settings.
