Deactivating unused scenery for VAS gain
I think this was only ever worthwhile doing if you used photoscenery. For some reason in FSX, PS would always take up VAS, no matter where you were flying. So it made sense to disable that if you weren't flying in that area. However, I have used PS in P3D and did not see any increase or decrease in VAS if the PS was enabled or disabled (unless flying over it of course). I am not using PS at the moment so don't know if that is still the case or if it has changed. Pretty sure that if you are not using PS then you will see no benefit in disabling your other scenery when not flying there.

P3D V3 and weather/textures - confused
True, I don't think there's any difference in performance with running AS16 on a networked computer. My only reason for doing so is so I can access the moving weather map at all times on my laptop. I have a number of programmes running on it like plan g, PFPX, Pro ATC and Topcat. All of these things are quite useful during a flight so it's nice to have them easily accessible while not having to switch away from P3D on my main computer.

P3D V3 and weather/textures - confused
Hi Rob I got the AS16 ASCA combination recently and am delighted with it. Both AS16 and ASCA run over the network and that is how I have it set up. In fact they were both very easy to set up that way. I don't have any figures on the VAS they consume but I haven't noticed any increase since moving to this programme and I have done some decent length flights of about 4 hours or so in the NGX. Cheers Stu.

AS16 Visibility settings
Hi Mike I just left mine at the defaults, which is 75 for surface and 100 for upper I think. But AS16 automatically reduces it if actual visibility is less than that so you don't need to increase or decrease it yourself. Cheers Stu

prepar3d watermark
Hi Stratocruiser I posted about this previously - please see this post here: http://www.avsim.com/topic/479178-p3d-31-before-year-end/?p=3334512 Cheers Stu

PFPX AND ASN.
Hi Mike, sorry for the delay. I've checked it out now and I'm getting a problem with it too! When I select P3D v3 it just gives me an error every time. However, if you use P3D v2 it will work properly. Just set the path for P3D v2 to your v3 files folder in My Documents and it will work as normal. Hope that helps. Cheers Stu.

Hey Richard Sennett
Great shots these! I am already hooked on NE but have just used European ones so far. Is this in the USA? Looks fantastic, thanks for sharing. As Rich mentioned, you can tun off loads of things at night and don't notice the difference, so that you can turn NE settings quite high. In the graphics settings for P3D you can save different settings for day and night and switch easily between them.

PFPX AND ASN.
I'll take a look at the weekend when I'm back home and see if I can get it to work. As I mentioned I always export it to Pro ATC first and it works fine so maybe there is something I have missed when not using that programme. I'm sure it must be possible to do this without using Pro ATC though.

PFPX AND ASN.
OK that might be the problem then - if it is set to the sim folder it probably needs to be changed to Documents/Prepar3d Files (or something similar to that. Not near my sim PC at the moment so can't verify). Once all the paths are properly set then you should be able to follow your flight on the moving weather map just fine. I have mine on a laptop networked to it so I can check the weather ahead at any time - it's very nice to do that.

PFPX AND ASN.
That's odd. Silly question but have you set the path to your P3D documents folder? For example, if you have PFPX on a networked PC or something, you may need to set up the path. You can set the path by clicking on the browse button at the top of the export dialogue box.

PFPX AND ASN.
In PFPX, click export and tick the box for P3D. Click on save and it should send the file as a .pln to your documents folder/P3D files. In ASN, tick the box in (I think) general settings which tells ASN to load the active plan automatically. Once you are in P3D, open the flight planner and select the plan. This should then open up in ASN automatically. I think this will work but I have another step in my setup whereby it all gets exported to Pro ATC first but it should be fairly similar I think.

phantom shadows on airplanes
From what I've noticed, those shadows that appear to follow the camera when you pan around are shadows from cirrus clouds. You only see them when cirrus clouds are there anyway. I think it would be better if cirrus clouds could be disabled from casting shadows at all as they look bad. But yes, I also confirm Matthew's observations about weird lightening and darkening of the aircraft as you pan around it.

Sorry, couldn't wait: how would P3D display on 3440x1440 resolution display?
stufer replied to Noel's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcAh interesting, so things might be looking up for you with this monitor. Long may it continue! I still think I will hold off for the time being as I reckon I'll need a boost in GPU power to match the monitor and that will require a bit of saving first! I'm still very tempted by the extra width and the curved screen though... one day...

Sorry, couldn't wait: how would P3D display on 3440x1440 resolution display?
stufer replied to Noel's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcHi Noel Thanks a lot for that detailed review. I haven't taken the plunge yet but I'm finding it difficult to keep 4xSGSS on as well, even using a 1080p monitor. I've removed it now and am using DSR which I'm quite happy with. It isn't as good as using SGSS but I'm getting used to it. But it does sound as though these new monitors will require a lot of power to run them so perhaps my card might not be quite up to the challenge. Think I'll wait a while as I'm ok with running DSR on my smaller monitor and if I do upgrade later, I'll probably get a new GPU, but that will be much further down the line. Does the image quality look alright on that monitor without using SGSS?

ASN fps drop in dense clouds.
Sean, thank you so much. This appears to have restored performance on my initial test. Going to try a longer flight and see what happens. Really appreciate your help there. Cheers Stu.

ASN fps drop in dense clouds.
I'm also getting FPS hit in clouds now - turned off SGSS and still the same. Not sure if it is ASN or the REX fix that was issued recently. I've also added to the post on the Hifi forum.

Sorry, couldn't wait: how would P3D display on 3440x1440 resolution display?
stufer replied to Noel's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcThank you Vincent. That is what I was hoping for - that the removal of SGSS would free the resources needed to run the higher resolution. Those videos do show how much more immersive it looks too! Yeah, I think I'll go ahead and get this ordered pretty soon. Thanks, Stu.

Sorry, couldn't wait: how would P3D display on 3440x1440 resolution display?
stufer replied to Noel's topic in Video Hardware: Monitors | Multi-Monitors | Video Cards | Drivers etcHi guys, thanks for the recommendations here. I am considering getting one of these Dell 3415W monitors myself. However, cost would not allow me to upgrade my GPU at the same time. I currently have a GTX 980 (no fancy TI or anything, just the standard 980 with 4GB VRAM, I think). Do you think that would be enough to power one of these beauties? I currently run a 1080 monitor and use SGSS.

P3D3.2 looks really good, but hesitations are really bad!
Process Lasso is a good utility for limiting which cores programmes run on. I use Hyper Threading on my CPU so this may not be suitable for you but I set the Affinity Mask in the P3D.cfg to 85 and then run ASN and TrackIR on logical threads(?) 3,4,5,6 and 7. Process Lasso starts up automatically with Windows and applies the right cores whenever I start ASN and TrackIR. I went into more detail about this here: http://www.avsim.com/topic/484333-blurries/ I got all my info from SteveW and Nyxx pretty much. Hope that helps.

So what's going on at REX?
Great stuff Reed and all the REX team. This is much appreciated, thank you!

With Orbx England, default type airport buildings appear in UK2000 EGCC
Hi Pete I've used FTX England with UK2000 EGCC and I'm sure I fixed the anomalies by just disabling the EGCC BGLs in C:\Lockheed Martin\Prepar3D v3\ORBX\FTX_EU\FTX_EU_ENG_05_SCENERY\scenery. Have you also run the Vector configuration tool? In FTX Central, go to Tools, then you should find the tool towards the bottom of the list. Go to the Elevation correction tab and run the auto-configuration. Cheers Stu

Prepar3D v3.2 is out !
Yes NE loads up normally now.

Issues with 3.2
I think those mountains in the sky are just the tops of mountains appearing above a haze layer. I see that too with ASN. Don't know if it happens with other weather engines. For the blurry textures you could try limiting the frame rate to see if that helps.

Night Lighting - Taburet or Night Environment?
OrbX lighting is good but it only shows up within the LOD radius you set in the sim. So let's say you put it on maximum 6.5 miles - that is how far away you can see the lights. That is fine if you are pootling around in Piper Cub at a couple of thousand feet, but fly any higher and pretty soon you don't see any lights at all unless you take an outside view and look directly down. NE displays lights in all directions for miles around. If I'm crossing the English Channel I can see London lit up 60 miles ahead of me. Much more satisfying!
