    RIP Air Tran...

I think it is unfair to judge them based off one incident that happened almost 19 years ago. If that is what you use to decide which airline not to fly on then you probably shouldn't fly on very many airlines because most of them have at least one incident in their history that was caused due to negligence. I have flown on several AirTran flights and while I still don't like flying with them it doesn't have anything to do with safety.
  2. That is almost an identical setup to my PC that I built last July. The 4790k is an excellent CPU however it does run a little hot (this is common to all Haswell chips from what I read) so it is good you upgraded the cooler. I ordered the Corsair H110 as well for increased cooling, but right now I am running an upgraded heatsink fan that is twice the size of the stock one the 4790k comes with and it keeps it super cold. I performed a stress test on my CPU and it stayed under 70C the entire time under 100% load so the H110 water cooler will be more than enough as far as cooling goes. Also regarding CPU speeds, the 4790k runs standard at 4.0GHz but it has a "turbo mode" which runs it at 4.4GHz with no issue. I don't know too much about this turbo mode but I know it isn't the same as OCing the chip and I've read that people have OCed their 4790ks to 4.8 and sometimes even 5.0, however I have been plenty happy with the 4.4 mine is putting out now. The motherboard I have is the ASUS Maximus VI Extreme so it is a little older than the one you ordered but I will say I had a memory issue with it due to the BIOS being out of date. I'll leave the link the the post I made about it just in case you come across a similar issue and want to reference it. http://forum.avsim.net/topic/457870-pc-freezing/#entry3144409 I think I have the same RAM or at least something similar. I know it is 2x 8GB G.SKILL sticks, can't remember the exact model. When I built my computer the 700 series was the latest series in the Nvidia graphics cards so I went with the EVGA GTX 780Ti and this thing is a monster. Pretty much every game I have runs about 60 FPS constantly while on max settings. FSX being...well...FSX I don't get that kind of constant performance, but I have never seen a drop below 30 frames so I am still really happy. For storage I wanted to have everything on a SSD, I didn't want to deal with HDDs anymore. I went with the Samsung 840 1TB SSD. It is a fantastic SSD but if I could do it over I would have bought a separate, smaller SSD for my OS to run on and then use the 1TB for everything else. Or, if I had the money, I might have even bought a separate 128GB or 256GB SSD for FSX too and ran 3 SSDs (that would be pretty awesome). I will probably end up buying another SSD at some point because I filled up 1TB pretty quick (although FSX probably only accounts for about 150GB of it, including a clean backup version of FSX). I have a 1000W EVGA power supply that is very similar to yours so no issue there. Case is just personal preference, just make sure it is big enough because these graphics cards are huge. I was going to go with a mid-sized case (I didn't know how large the 780 was at the time), luckily a friend convinced me to go with a full size. I have a CoolerMaster (again can't remember the exact model) but it is a full size case with plenty of fans so it has good air flow and helps cool everything. Overall that is a good system and since it is similar to mine I am positive that you will be very pleased with it.

    RIP Air Tran...

No, AirTran was bought by Southwest quite some time ago and they have been slowly merging everything. Yesterday was AirTran's last revenue flight.
  4. So this should be my final update (hopefully) for anyone who is following this or might need this for future reference. After my last solution failed I tested each stick of RAM individually and in each slot on my motherboard as well as testing a separate stick of RAM from a different computer to make sure that it wasn't a bad stick of RAM. I conducted stress tests on my CPU and GPU and they both passed with flying colors (and I was actually quite impressed with how cold my CPU stays under 100% load); it was only during the stress test that focused more on RAM that my computer crashed and since I was fairly certain it wasn't the sticks of RAM themselves I focused on the motherboard. One of the final ideas I had (I had actually thought of this earlier on, just hadn't actually tried it) was updating the BIOS. I spent a couple days reading how to update the BIOS and updated from 1402 to 1603 which is the latest version as of today. After updating the BIOS my computer managed to run a full 10 mins in the RAM stress test whereas before I would be lucky if it lasted more than 30 seconds. Unfortunately at that point I wasn't able to do any flights to test it out completely as I had to go to work but I will test out some flights in the near future and if all goes well I will mark this as the correct answer for anyone who might come across a similar issue.
  5. If there is an aircraft you would like to see in FSE you can go to the forums and there is a section for suggesting new aircraft. I did a quick search on their forums and didn't come up with any results leading me to believe the aircraft you are talking about hasn't been suggested. That Saab looks like a pretty reasonable aircraft to add and the staff are usually pretty open to new aircraft so I am sure if you requested it they would take a look at it.
  6. I know what you mean. I first installed Steam in 2006 when I bought Counter Strike. I think it was Christmas of 2010 or 2011 where I bought 27 games that were on sale and probably only spent about $70.
  7. Why do you say that? Why is not having to pay rental fees not an advantage? That is one less expense. Yep, the prices are pretty close to real life. Don't worry about purchasing an aircraft right now, there will be options later on.
  8. C208s are always good aircraft for FSE. They are pretty cheap to rent, can be found all over the place, and can carry a good amount of passengers/cargo. I have done lots of assignments in C208s on FSE, good little aircraft.
  9. Thanks, I knew there was another one out there that I had seen and I couldn't think of the name. I have been using the stats page on the VATSIM website as an alternative for filing PIREPs for one of my VAs but it doesn't offer as much flight info as Vataware used to. Plus what Mark said, no breakdown on aircraft, airline, routes flown, and all the other fancy stats I like to look at. Guess I better get working on skewing the stats on Vatstats, don't want people thinking I fly those scarebuses often, . EDIT: I will say the one thing I'm not liking about Vatstats is that is even keeps a log of the flights I didn't complete which is bad because I am having issues with my PC and get frequent game crashes, especially on longer flights.
  10. FSX:SE sounds great and I picked it up while it was on sale. Only thing preventing me from making the switch is the reports of certain addons not being compatible with it (such as some PMDG aircraft). That is a big deal breaker for me, it would be pointless for me to switch to FSX:SE only to not be able to use my favorite addons.
  11. I know this isn't exactly VATSIM, but it is closely related. Vataware returned yesterday like it had said it would. Is this all that Vataware will offer now? I'm not exactly thrilled about this new Vataware, it only offers a live map and flights on the server. What happened to being able to look at pilot profiles to see how much time they have spent in certain aircraft and a log of all their flights? That is the feature I liked about the old Vataware the most; if I want to see flights that are happening on the server I'll just look at VatSpy. I've tried finding an alternative to Vataware but haven't found one, anyone else have any luck?
  12. Congrats, enjoy! And if you are looking for some flying around SoCal there is a VERY fine Beechcraft Bonanza A36 sitting at KBUR for rent
  13. So quick update. I was reading some documentation for my motherboard and noticed it had a recommended setup for the graphic card. When I initially put my computer together I thought I had read something that said it didn't matter which PCI-E slot I installed the graphics card into, but apparently it does speed wise anyway. I opened up my case moved the graphics card from slot 2 to slot 1 and was able to do 3 flights in a row (before I would be lucky if I could complete 1) in various aircraft and in various parts of the world. Thinking I had fixed the issue I attempted (for the fourth time) to re-do my flight from LEMD-EDDM and I made it almost all the way through the flight but the same issue popped up on me while on 5 mile final for EDDM. I had to step away from my computer and take a walk because I was about to break something. I am getting really frustrated with this issue and I am running out of ideas for solutions. My two thoughts right now are either a bad graphics card (which I hope is not the case because my card is not cheap) or a bad motherboard.
  14. You can fly any livery you want and the FSE program doesn't have a FA and the passengers don't care if you slam your aircraft into the ground on landing, they just want to get to their destination . FSE is a lot of fun, especially when you save up enough to buy your first aircraft.
  15. The aircraft you listed are plenty reasonable to fly in FSE. As Keith said, you can fly B738 and A321s but they are all in jobs and you are basically a contract pilot. It is not possible for you to own the aircraft of fly assignments of your choice on them. The assignments for those aircraft are predetermined and personally I don't enjoy flying them, but some do. Personally I own a Beechcraft Bonanza A36 and a Beechcraft KA 350 and enjoy flying them all over the US. My B350 is especially good at making money, it can carry a decent number of passengers or cargo and has a good range.
  16. That was another solution I was looking into. The only problem is I don't know how to roll back to an earlier driver and even if I did my system hasn't been stable since I built it so I wouldn't even know what driver to roll back to.
  17. Thanks for the advice. Guess I'm going to order a water cooler and hope it solves the problem.
  18. Motherboard: Asus Maximus VI Extreme CPU: Intel i7 4790k at 4.4 Ghz Graphics: GTX780Ti Classified Edition RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2x8GB) Power Supply: EVGA Supernova 1000W OS: Window 7 Home Premium 64 bit My CPU is on "turbo mode" which boosts it from 4.0 Ghz to 4.4 Ghz. One of the first things I tried was turning the turbo mode off in the BIOS and also checked fan settings in the BIOS. Can't remember the exact model of my heatsink fan off the top of my head. I'm pretty sure it is the Cool Master Hyper 212 or something very similar to it. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103065
  19. So I have spent about 6 months researching this topic to try and find what might be wrong, but I am starting to run out of ideas and solutions. I custom built a desktop PC back in July and it is awesome, it was the dream computer I had been saving up for. However, after setting everything up and getting my flight sim fully operational again I ran into an issue of overheating and my computer completely freezing. My computer would freeze on whatever I was doing last and the sound would be looping so fast that it would just sound like a loud buzzing noise coming from my speakers. This would happen mostly when I was gaming and occasionally when I was just doing something like browsing the internet, but it was most frequent when flying on FSX. I downloaded software that would monitor the temp of my CPU cores and found that my CPU was running a little hot. I tried several solutions. I first took the heatsink fan off the CPU and saw the thermal paste didn't look too good, so I cleaned off the old thermal paste and applied a fresh coat making sure that my heatsink was seated properly on the CPU. While my PC ran cool for about a day it quickly went back to freezing up again. Next solution, I tried buying a new heatsink fan. I went out and bought this big Coolmaster heatsink that was easily twice the size of the stock heatsink and had good reviews. Again, it provided positive results for about a day or two. I had to move to Germany about a week and a half after building my PC so for about 4 months it was sitting boxed up while the military shipped it to me. When I set my PC back up here in Germany it seemed to be doing better. The temperatures hadn't gotten worse and I could, for the most part, do flights without issues. My idle temps are usually around 40C and when I am gaming my temps are usually in the high 50s to low 60s. However, I recently picked up Orbx PNW and NCA while it is on sale and when I try to fly in that area my PC is usually running mid 60s to low 70s and it ends up freezing every time. Sometimes I can get halfway through the flight, sometimes it is on climbout, this last time it was when I was only a 1000 ft off the ground after takeoff. Now I cannot 100% nail the issue down to overheating but that is really the only thing I can find that could be wrong. The only other solution I have found through all the reading I have done is that I might have a faulty motherboard or CPU which I really hope is not the case. I am considering buying a water cooling system and seeing if that helps or not, but I want to see if anyone else has ideas about what it could be.
  20. The charts are downloaded by airport individually, yes. So you can download the EGLL charts as one download and that will give you all the charts for EGLL, but then you want the EGKK charts and that is a separate download. Just to clarify, you don't have to download each individual plate one at a time. The download times are very good though, it only takes me a few seconds to download an airport package. As for opening multiple charts at the same time, I have not actually played around with Navigraph charts enough to figure out if it can do that. I'm sure if it can't the staff over at Navigraph would look into it if someone suggested it.
  21. Navigraph Charts. You can purchase individual charts or you can purchase a year subscription for unlimited downloads of charts. I have the subscription and it is great and just like their FMS data it is always up to date, new charts come out every AIRAC cycle. http://www.navigraph.com/Charts.aspx#AirportCharts
  22. I really enjoyed their B58 Baron however I switched over to the Milviz B55 which I like much better. Overall Carenado's B58 is good though. I would also recommend their Bonanzas (my favorite is the A36 model). The AC11 is also pretty fun to fly as well. I try to avoid their G1000 planes because I'm just not happy with the quality of them. Some of their other glass cockpit planes that don't use the G1000 aren't as bad (such as the A36 Bonanza) and I can tolerate them more.
  23. I would say my longest time spent traveling was going from Fort Huachuca to Fort Benning. My flight went from Tucson to Atlanta my flight was scheduled to leave at about 12PM, but of course our sergeants were so eager to get rid of us that as soon as it was midnight (the day that our leave started) they had us off to the airport. Got to the airport about 2:30AM then did the 3-4 hour flight. By the time we caught the shuttle from ATL to Fort Benning and got to Fort Benning it was about 11PM. Almost all the flights I had while I was going between training bases when I joined the military were long travel times just because the sergeants wanted to get us out as soon as possible (which usually meant leaving at midnight) so that they didn't have to deal with us anymore.
  24. All it says in Wikipedia is that there was problems with the flight control systems but they were fixed in 1992 (2 years after it entered service). The second paragraph just talks about how its center of gravity is more towards the rear of the aircraft making it more challenging to fly.
