  1. Not sure if this is related, but seems like it. I decided to fly some circuits in the C172 off the aircraft carrier. After landing, I wanted to taxi around on the deck. No matter what I tried, I could not turn the aircraft around. As soon as I started moving I got weathervaned straight into the wind (the aircraft carrier is constantly moving giving an apparent wind on the deck). I had the throttle firewalled, full rudder, and a little brake on the same side and I could only get the plane to veer slightly in one direction. Something is definitely wrong in the model somewhere. Bug will be filed.
  2. Thanks for the update. Glad you hear you are happy, I will check out your review.
  3. Hi all, Not sure if this question should be here or in the design forum, so sorry if it's in the wrong spot. Does anyone know how to easily modify the prop disc to get rid of the red bands? I find this extremely unrealistic. I've reported it as a bug, but I doubt it will be a priority. I tried monkeying around in GIMP and had some marginal success, but I only end up with a slightly less annoying visual. Original: My hack:
  4. I just tried the default 172. I can easily put it into a spin, but it recovers itself after about 1/2 to 3/4 of a rotation. A real life 172 is not hard to put in a spin if you do it right. The method I learned during my training long ago was to perform a gentle straight ahead stall as per normal, but just as the aircraft is about to stall, add a few hundred RPM and full left rudder. The added torque from the engine will flip you right into a spin nicely. ** Not that I should have to say this, but please don't try this at home in a real airplane unless you know what you are doing.
  5. Actually they have moved them as of the latest beta 2. They are now in X-Plane 11/Output/preferences/X-Plane Joystick Settings.prf Perhaps now that they are separate we won't lose our settings if something in the normal preferences file has to change. One can hope
  6. If you are using TrackIR, can't you just reposition yourself then 'center' TrackIR? I use the free FaceTrackNoIR (however using IR) and I can do this. For example, if my current comfortable position is too far forward, I simply sit forward, push the key that recenters FaceTrackNoIR, then sit back again. This causes my comfortable sitting position to be back from the 'center' that was defined when I pushed the 'center' key. Make sense? If not ask again and I'll try to clarify. Good luck!
  7. Just wanted to pipe in and say I did a similar fix but used the guts of another joystick instead. I didn't have a BU0836A and didn't want to incur the cost of buying one so went with a cheaper option. I went to the computer store and bought a cheap, second hand joystick. I opened it up and carefully removed the controller board, keeping track of which wires went to the pitch and roll axis on the joystick. I simply wired those to the pitch and roll in the Saitek yoke, mounted the board in the yokes body and done. Granted this will only work if the joystick you are scavenging doesn't have a null zone issue itself. The Leo Bodnar board is certainly a much cleaner solution, but not the only one
  8. I don't believe there is a refund process. However, you should probably contact support if you are having issues with version 10. If the mouse issue is only in version 11, then you should file a bug. Technical support for version 10: http://www.x-plane.com/support/ Bug reports for version 11: http://dev.x-plane.com/support/bugreport.html Good luck, I hope you get it sorted out. Version 10 should run smoothly, but version 11 is known to have FPS issues at this time.
  9. Doesn't the log file show these 'tweaks' happening? I'm not familiar enough with what happens when you perform these tweaks, but if the log file shows them taking place then LR has a way to detect them when bugs are reported (since logs are required for reporting bugs). Perhaps someone who has done these tweaks could take a quick peek in the logs?
  10. The Redbird controls sure look sexy. Just wanted to reply that I have the Saitek yoke and it can also be mounted under a desk. Granted I used a little DIY to do it. I went to Home Depot (hardware store) and picked up some metal strapping. Basically it's about 2" (5 cm) wide, maybe 1/16" (2 mm) thick and cut to length to wrap around the body of the base. I used two straps (one front and one back) to hold the controls to the underside of the desk. I installed four blind nuts to the underside of the desk and hold the straps down with bolts into the blind nuts. This way I can just remove the four bolts and the whole thing pops off. When it's bolted down, it's rock solid and at a perfect position. The controls I have came with desk mount clamps (and I see the Redbird ones do to) but it wasn't very clean in my opinion, thus my DIY hack. Anyway, this was more to talk about the mounting option rather than which controls to use I actually had to hack my Saitek yoke (with the guts of another joystick) to get rid of built in null zones so I don't necessarily recommend the stock Saitek yoke. Sorry for derailing the thread
  11. You're welcome and very glad to hear you got it sorted out. Hopefully they fix up the settings interface to make debugging this type of thing easier.
  12. Have you tried digging through the preferences file? You will see a bunch of lines like the following: _joy_AXIS_use0 7 _joy_AXIS_use1 6 _joy_AXIS_use2 3 _joy_AXIS_use3 4 _joy_AXIS_use4 0 _joy_AXIS_use5 0 _joy_AXIS_use6 0 _joy_AXIS_use7 0 _joy_AXIS_use8 0 ... Check if the same value is set to more than one axis. I realize this may be a tedious exercise, but it might shed some light on the issue. The preferences file can be found under the X-Plane 11 folder : X-Plane 11\Output\preferences\X-Plane.prf
  13. No idea if this will help you or not, but I thought I would throw it out there. I had a couple issues initially with my controls not working properly. I have 3 devices: a Saitek yoke and throttle quadrant, the guts of a logitec stick inside my Saitek yoke to fix the pitch and roll null zone issue, and the guts of a logitec stick inside my old rudder pedals. Yes, I like to hack my controls I first had to go through and set ALL unused axis to "NONE" and only set the ones I needed. Initially I had three 'pitch', three 'roll', etc. Next, I had an issue with one of my toe brakes. It was not detecting the full range and was keeping the left brake on half way at all times. No matter how many times I calibrated or played with how far I moved the pedal during calibration it wouldn't sort itself out. My solution was to go into the preferences file, find the axis responsible, and manually set the low, mid, and high values for that axis. As long as I don't go back into the joystick settings (which seems to overwrite what I fixed, even when I don't calibrate) things work great. Here is the file and the settings I used: X-Plane 11\Output\preferences\X-Plane.prf _joy_lo_raw_dat1 0.500000 _joy_center1 0.750000 _joy_hi_raw_dat1 1.000000 _joy_axis_is_calibrated_override1 1 Using the calibration in the sim, the low value was set around 0. There might just be something funky with the pot on my toe break as I've had to do some contortions in the past to get it to work properly (usually all in game though). Note the last setting. If you leave the override as 0 the sim will nag you about having an uncalibrated joystick. Obviously this is not ideal, but maybe it will spark an idea or help someone get flying. Good luck all!
  14. Where do you like to fly? Maybe some of us will populate some your empty airports I've naturally focused on my local area as I'm sure many others have. It actually doesn't take too long to populate a small GA airport and submit it. Maybe you could look into trying out the WED (World EDitor) program and see if you might like to populate some airports yourself? I go through periods where I actually find that more fun than flying the sim. Then again I might be a little odd
  15. Go here: http://x-plane.cleverest.eu On the menu on the left side of the page check "Runway" and select "Only 3d". I've done a bunch of the ones in Ontario, Canada. These are gateway submitted airports.
  16. The purpose of a beta is to find bugs before final release. If you are using a beta you are essentially signing up to find bugs and report them. You should also read the release notes so you know what you are getting into. They clearly state the current issues. If you don't want to find bugs and would rather just fly, it's best at this point to run v10 if you have it or wait for the first actual release of v11.
  17. Sounds like a great idea! As an optional add-on, if there happens to be some missing airports/helipads/seabases in the area in question those who are comfortable in WED could coordinate getting these put into the gateway as well.
  18. Unfortunately, the gateway is not really meant for download (although you can certainly do that). It's main purpose is for upload for future Xplane updates. If you manually download an airport from the gateway, you will need to keep track of that and remove it when it is finally included for everyone. If you don't remove it, it will take precedence over any further updates that may have happened at the gateway. I don't know of any way to tell if you have duplicates. Maybe they will include something in a future update. I'm hoping we can assume that all approved airports will be included in future updates so that after an update, we can remove ALL airports that we manually downloaded and put in Custom Scenery. You could always just put them temporarily in another folder outside of the Xplane directory and if they dissappear put them back. Vince
  19. Yes, the map is getting updated. I'm not sure if it's automated, but seems to be as my submissions show up on the map soon after. The first push of gateway airports will be happening with 10.35. See here: http://developer.x-plane.com/ Vince
  20. Agreed, before you know it you'll be spending all your time creating scenery instead of flying. Or you'll try and do both and your family will only see you when you get hungry
  21. Yes! Check this out: http://developer.x-plane.com/manuals/wed/
  22. I understand the point of view of "why should we have to do this?". Well, you don't. However, the reality is that LR is not going to do it immediately so we can either all sit here and stew or some of us can use the provided tools and try to fill in the gaps. Speaking only for myself as someone who contributes to the gateway, I don't feel others are obligated to contribute. However, I have tried to gently persuade others that it's not that hard to do if you are upset about a missing airport or some missing buildings at your favorite strip. That's basically how I started. My local airstrip that I soar out of every summer was nothing by a patch of trees in Xplane. I knew there were tools to create our own airports, but I thought for sure it would be really complicated and I didn't want to waste days trying to figure it out. Finally I gave in an fired up WED. Well, without reading any documentation (who does that!) or looking at the great tutorials online, I muddled around a bit and managed to create something, but there were issues. The first being trees all over my runway. I almost gave up at that point, thinking this is junk. However, the fact that I had just created something that I could instantly fly around grabbed me and I decided to suck it up and go read the WED manual and do a few searches online. Once I found the 'exclusion zone' and my runway popped out all nice and clear I was hooked! If I had taken the time to read the manual first and check out a few basic tutorials it would have been a smoother experience I guess what I'm trying to say is that I don't think everyone is obligated to jump in and learn how to use WED. However, I am trying to say that if you are upset enough to maybe give up on Xplane due to missing airports/buildings, learning to create one yourself may keep you simming in Xplane and you may also find yourself a new aspect of the hobby. It's not for everyone, but it's also not as hard as it sounds and many may be surprised how easy it is once they give it a go - and read the manual
  23. Well, we can argue whose job it is, but it's very simple using WED to add just the runways for a missing airport if that is all you want to do. It would probably take all of 15 minutes to plop down the runways in the right spot, set the ICAO, elevation, a quick exclusion zone, and submit it. I find it only takes me about 4 hours total to create a single strip, small community airport with everything. Most people might not want to go to that level, but I actually find it quite fun to create something that wasn't there before and then go fly around it. I would rather LR spent their limited resources on more complicated coding tasks. Sure it would be nice if they could do everything, but at least they've provided a way for us to fill in the gaps. Creating simple airports is not that hard. Give it a go, you might be surprised how much fun it is once you learn the basics of WED.
  24. Hmm, maybe the gateway was down when you tried? I can see that scenery just fine. I used the link from the map and also went there directly. It shows a 2D scenery added by the WEDbot. Hopefully you can grab it by trying again. Vince
