  1. Hi Bill, I wouldn't recommend replacing Horizon VFR UK with Orbx ENG to be honest. Now I say that without bias because (i) I love Orbx and am flying exclusively in Orbx US areas at the moment, and (ii) I have Orbx ENG installed at the moment rather than Horizon VFR UK (which I do also own). But IMHO, Orbx ENG is their weakest product and you will soon miss the accuracy and realism of Horizon (especially with Treescapes). The only real reason I still have Orbx ENG installed is sheer laziness - the install of Horizon VFR UK + Treescapes is quite an ordeal lol!!........ I just haven't gotten around to ringfencing 3 hours to get it all done. If I compare my own area of the UK in Orbx ENG, it just doesn't resemble reality at all. There are roads running straight into rivers, large cities are reduced to tiny hamlets and well, although it's visually quite "nice" it's nothing like having the real thing, like Horizon VFR UK, especially with some 3D enhancement like Treescapes or Revolution X. I will definitely be moving back to Horizon VFR UK soon, and picking up Revolution X as soon as I do.
  2. Really just shows how subjective these things are because I think the Carenadon Malibu's engine sounds are the best I've ever heard in any GA aircraft for FS. Unlike most engine sounds is FS, which to me sound more like volume-adjusted exterior sounds, the Malibu's sounds exactly like a real piston aircraft sounds from the cockpit, with a headset on. I think they did a brilliant job and hope they stick with this technique. Incidentally they started this refreshing new approach with the CT206H, which again has (IMHO) proper interior engine sounds, aligned to an interior perspective, with headset on.
  3. Oh and in my experience, people who use the 'word' prolly don't tend to be good at solutioning or thinking outside the box
  4. Even if a new PC comes with Win 8, it is so easy to get Win 7 64 bit and install it as the OS in your new PC. I wouldn't go near Win 8, for use with FSX. But your suggestion that FSX is moribund purely because FSX doesn't play nicely with Win 8 is way off. Dozens of people here on AVSIM have recounted there issues with Win 8, whether disappearing joystick assignments or other problems. And some seem to have no issues. But if you do have issues, and FSX is important enough to you to warrant it, (ie.. the main employment of the PC), then it's so easy to retrograde to Win 7 64 bit, and enjoy great FS performance, and a super stable OS in general. Heck even I managed it. "This hobby almost over?" ..... nah, with respect just one man's frustrations and lack of taking direct, focussed action to resolve them.
  5. Hey Howellerman, I've never tried that Orbx Portland Cityscape to be honest because I always assumed it'd be even heavier on the frames than the vanilla Orbx Portland. Perhaps I should give it a try!
  6. Although I much prefer flying in Orbx US and AU regions, there's nothing like some local flying at home sometimes. Unfortunately, my part of England (the north) is very poorly and inaccurately rendered in Orbx ENG; in general everywhere north of Watford was neglected in favour of a focus on the south IMHO ...... but I'm getting political there, so I'll keep my mouth shut! @ BrianG - You're welcome. All of those aircraft you mentioned are great. Also take a look at the Bay Tower Vans RV-7 and the Flight 1 T182 and Flight 1 C162, both are which are superb for low and slow GA touring ..... oh and the A2A C172..... so many choices!! - one tip about Orbx PNW; the greater Portland, OR metropolitan area really drags the frames down in my experience. Just worth mentioning because if you first load up in that area, you may be led to believe that the whole region is poor on frames. In my experience It's a very frame rate friendly region overall, just a shame that for me, I have to avoid the Portland area as the frames really suffer. Some people have said the same about the SeaTac area too, but my frames are absolutely fine around SeaTac; it's just Portland that stings for me.
  7. I love the attention to detail and the overall quality of the product Paul, but sadly, it's just not a type (nor even a category of aircraft) that I'm at all interested in. But for who love bombing around in these sorts of planes, it looks like a winner!
  8. Hi Brian. D'you know what, I've bought 4 "side by side" Orbx areas over the last few years; Pacific North West, Central Rocky Mountains, Northern Rocky Mountains, and Pacific Fjords. And in the last two weeks, I have realized just how little I have discovered in each of them yet. I am currently flying solely within the PNW region. I've always used the FTX Darrington (1S2) airport as a base in that area but lacked imagination and would often just keep flying up the valley to FTX Concrete (3W5) and back. This time round, I've based myself at Hoquiam KHQM (Bowerman) a stunning freeware FTX airport that is better than some of their payware. And I've been flying over the huge expanse of the PNW region that I've not yet touched on; mainly, up the Washington Coast, to the north coast (Port Angeles etc), and along the north coast to "the islands" then along to familiar territory near Darrington. It feels like I've bought a new region pack but in fact it's just that I'm using more imagination and exploring more of the areas that I already have in the PNW region. ........ I haven't even crossed the water to Vancouver Island, Vancouver or the Canadian parts of this region yet................ and I've owned it for nearly 4 years!! So you could easily get just PNW and do some serious touring. But......... if I were in California I wouldn't be able to resist picking up the new NORCAL region! .... I will be getting it but I'm spent up (on mainly bad purchase decisions like the Wilco TBM) for this month. For GA touring aircraft; there are so many to choose from; personally, I think the IRIS Jabiru J160 is unbeatable for low and slow touring at the moment. But I also love Ant's Airplanes P92 Eaglet, and Tecnam Sierra. I am also re-discovering some little used Carenado and Alabeo aircraft such as the Tomahawk and the 210, that I'm having a lot of fun in. My system is getting a little old now too (i7 2600k, 7850 2GB HD), but I find that I can still fly in Orbx land, albeit with autogen settings not quite maxed out, in good GA aircraft and still get a solid 30 FPS (locked). Have fun!
  9. Ah ok, I see. So from their persepective there is in fact a manual process required to 'apply' their NE effect to different areas of the FS world; different roads, urban centres, etc. That makes more sense as to why it's being sold in such fragmented packages. Cheers.
  10. It's better than my hopeless repainting skills could ever muster! Indeed! "Cessna November Oscar Lima, Cleared Take-off Runway 14, Mocha Hagotdi..."
  11. It's available now! Pardon my impatience Rich  .... was just dying to get my hands on your great work here  Here it is for others who are interested :- http://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?DLID=182792&CatID=fsxacrp&Cookie=1 (You'll need to log in to the library to download) Cheers.
  12. Yeah, it is certainly hard to understand the 'geographical' element to this product (outside of profiteering). I mean, are they suggesting Belgian night environments are different to Dutch and German lights? Will each country really be bespoke? Are are they just "applying these lights to each country" - at EUR 14 per pop ?
  13. EUR 14 per country is a bit steep IMHO. I may have bought this if it was a larger area (for example "Northern Eurpope") of say 6 or 7 countries, and at a price of about EUR 25. But I never fly in Belgium, so wouldn't pay EUR 14 for night lights for one of the smallest countries in Europe! (No offence to Belgique / Belgie; you understand my point).
  14. Hi James, I was exactly the same at the end of November - just bored. It was an uncomfortable boredome because I didn't want to accept that I was bored with the hobby and I didn't feel I wanted a break from it. But on 31st Nov I packed up my Yoke, Pedals, Throttles, etc and I did not touch FS for two months; Dec and Jan. It was nice having a breaking; getting some perspective back (because FS is addictive), doing other stuff. .....and by 1st Feb I was absolutely itching to get back in the saddle! ......... I have very little time to fly at the moment, due to domestic and University commitments but the windows of opportunity I do get, I am really enjoying again. Bizarrely, because my break I was heavily absorbed into complex tubeliners, IFR and point to point 'operational' flying. Now, I am doing 100% VFR flying in small GA singles (and the odd twin), based around short tours in Orbx land (maybe taking in 4 local fields in a 30 minute window), still using charts, ADFs, etc, where possible ......... and I'm LOVING it!........ I don't feel any inclination to get back into a jet and start plugging numbers into FMCs at the moment, although I'm sure that will change in the future. So my advice is, make yourself take a break - even if it's just 2 weeks (but a month or two is better).
  15. Hi Mephic, You'll be abolutely fine with the A2A C172, and the included manual. It's ultimately a 172; a simple training aircraft; just as in real life, you can turn the key like in a car, fire wall the throttle and it won't bite you (in the short term or medium term ) But of course, you will want to cherish and look after your A2A C172 just like a real one. The documentaton is very good and also the product as a whole is very intuitive. After loading the airplane in FSX just press SHIFT+2, SHIFT+3, SHIFT+4, etc, etc and take a look at each dialogue screen. Shift+8 is the pre-flight (I think, from memory!) and the other important one is the maintenance hangar. I doubt very much you'll get lost with this plane.
  16. Ron's obviously not a Father Ted fan, EngineRoom  Ahhhh y'will .... y'will...... Y'WILL....... Y'WIIIIIIILLLLLLLLLLL !!!!!
  17. Well Ron you'd have to own the Just Flight "Flying Club" Archer III :- http://www.justflight.com/product/flying-club-archer-iii ..... in itself, it's a very dated add-on but the flight dynamics are 100% Rob Young and much more convincing than Carenado's IMHO. If you've got the above, or choose to get it, I can give you the merged aircraft.cfg to use, that employs "the best of both worlds".
  18. Carenado PA32 Saratoga? Lovely pics!...... Makes we want to go and re-install all of my MSE states.
  19. Today's flight is with NWGA (North West General Aviation), based at Bowerman Airport, Hoquiam, up to Port Angeles on the northern Washington coast, facing Canada. Our aircraft is one of NWGA's versatile Cessna CT206Hs. With onboard integrated oxygen we were up to 10,500. This turbocharged aircraft has no trouble climbing at a healthy rate to altitudes like this. CLICK to see full size pics
  20. Nice work! I've been flying the ES DA42 quite a lot lately too.
  21. Did you definitely upload successfully? Today's files in the file library appear to have been approved, and there's no sign of this one yet. :(
  22. Run Forrest Run!! Wilco's TBM850 is chasing you!!
  23. I'm not entirely sure Al. I just know that I installed this new full installer for QW757 SP3, went into FSX, and immediately noticed that my controller assignment for 'Parking Brake' was not working. On checking the FSX menu I saw that it was because FSUIPC was now missing. A quick reinstall and all was fine - including my fsuipc.cfg settings all still being safe and well. But the Addon Manager is just somewhere I am "never going" again, so sadly I won't be using this product. But of course, we should all make our decisions based on our own experiences. If there are people who have no problems with Virtuali's Addon Manager then they can happily take advantage of this product. My experience was one of many problems, crashes and badly timed updates, and hence Addon Manager will never be part of my set up.
  24. Great work! I'm grabbing that for sure! EDIT: It's not in the library yet. So I guess it's still awaiting approval.
