  1. For most of the reasons given above, I am back to spending 95% of my available sim time in FSX..... but, I would qualify that by saying that it isn't really any indication of how I feel about P3D2........ I love P3D2!!....... in the hopefully not too distant future it will definitely be my main (probably sole) platform. But at this point, it does need patching on a few issues like black screen, and the fact that there really aren't many add-ons properly supported for it yet, means that it's something that I look forward to in the hobby, rather than something I'm enjoying now which would be FSX.
  2. I agree that EU ENG was a let down (and I've not re-installed it, after a recent FSX rebuild) but I think EU SCO was a huge step up and I think it's a beautiful FTX region; on a par with PNW and CRM easily. Perhaps you're not flying to the right places in SCO; try the Hebrides islands, Orkneys and Shetlands, and the northern coast areas. It's not as impressive around Glasgow, Edinburgh or the lower highlands IMHO. ENG was just a miss for me; a big shame when it's your home country. My fave FTX area overall is the mighty Australia (SP4), which has so much variety and scope, it's unreal. I do like CRM too. I was not impressed at all with NZ; the texturing looks cartoonish in both those regions to me. I'll also go out on a limb in saying that, unlike CRM, the FTX PNW region is starting to look dated now, especially the (very repetitive) textures that sit below the autogen trees. 4 years ago I would have said that anything Orbx release was insta-buy, but now I think they're a mixed bag and I haven't bought a region since FTX Global and doubt I will.
  3. I don't have P3D2 installed at the moment (awaiting the first update as Black Screen and other niggles just got too frustrating on a daily basis), but when I did, I had the most of the NORWAY! stuff installed (the AoN airports, the mesh, the NSX lc and vector, etc, etc, everything apart from some of the individual upgraded airports). It functioned perfctly but FPS were definitely lower than in FSX; even with P3D2 on very modest settings (no shadows, autogen sparse etc) to make it more comparable with FSX settings. I had the same thing with the Majestic Q400; amazing addon for frame rates in FSX but in P3D it was one of the heaviest. Now here's something bizarre; Coolsky DC-9; heavy(ish) frame rate demand in FSX right?......... light as you like in P3D2.... it runs like a default aircraft in P3D2 for me! So the Norway stuff certainly installs and you can see it; but like most FSX addons, all is not quite well when you're running it in P3D2.
  4. Ron what you do with your Friday nights is no-one's business but your own!
  5. Yes, I've just flown the Coolsky DC-9 into Providence, RI, and the buffeting was way over the top. The DC-9 was literally getting thrown around like a C152. It just didn't feel realistic. If it could be toned down to about 30% of what it was doing here, it would be fantastic. At present I find Opus perhaps doesn't throw the plane around enough, and ASN throws it around too much - for the same given winds and conditions. So we need something in the middle! EDIT: Just read Kostas' post above and appreciate the excessive effect of turbulance on the heavier aircraft may be to do with DHM settings that I'm using in Opus, so fair enough if that's the case. I will reduce Opus' DHM settings and test the flight again soon.
  6. I can't see how it is discrimination Olli. It's not about the person (the 'newbie') it's about the questions people who are new to the hobby need answers for. I can't imagine people sneering into a "New to FS" section and laughing at silly questions .... (that's what potentially happens now, in the main FSX section  ). .... this would just be a 'right place' for those who are new to FS, to ask basic "starter for ten" style questions. I bet there are perhaps a lot of people new to FS who are maybe afraid to ask basic or newbie questions in the main sections for fear of getting blasted out the building. If new entrants to the hobby had a focussed section for that purpose, they wouldn't need to fear this. Apparantly, us simmers are a diminishing bunch, so we should probably do a bit more to look after new entrants into the hobby, and make them feel welcome. So in short ........... replace the word "Newbie" (which has negative connotations), with the word "New Entrants" and then I can't see any discrimination. Everyone has to start somewhere.
  7. Love it!! That was 8:47 of my life worth spending watching this.
  8. I was going to suggest that maybe the OP's threads to date would be better placed in the "Newbie" forum section, but then I looked and saw that there's doesn't seem to be such a section? (unless I'm just missing it. There is a 'new to RW flight' section but not new to FS as far as I can see). So maybe AVSIM could have a "New to Flight Simulation" section, where people could ask more basic or rudimentary questions, such as the OPs in this case? Cheers.
  9. +1 I can't really understand how "interface" comes into it; My use of TIR looks like this; launch TIR, launch FSX. Once you have a good profile (which is everything, and I'd guess what caused Bob's bad experience), you do not touch the interface. I honestly haven't touched the TIR interface in about 4 years. It's just something I start up, then go fly. I use the F9 key to turn it on / off and that's it. It's just about naturally looking around the VC; far more realistic that pop-up panels of other monitors with flat displays on. Olli, I'm amazed a serious simmer like you isn't using TrackIR!! ... honestly If I didn't have TIR I wouldn't sim any more; No way I could sit in front of a limited, static view of a panel. It'd be like going back to 2D for me. Short of a full home cockpit, TrackIR is everything for me, in terms of immersion. But of course it's personal choice and yes, not everyone likes it. But I don't think it reflects reality to suggest that one bad experience of TIR not working well for one person, suggests that it's going to be like that for others. I'm sure that for most it's plug and play and once you have a good profile to use (always happy to share mine), you're set, you won't be using the interface; ever.
  10. Beautiful ambience and feel, as always. Looking forward to catching the full vid.
  11. It isn't really connected to the amount of screens; it's about immersion in the VC and naturally "looking around" in order to look around in the cockpit. I've never used it with 3 screens; I use it with a pretty standard 26" TFT single monitor.
  12. It's not a case of adding code to get different wheels. Those are from an entirely different model. I'm afraid you can't change parts of the default planes, like the wheels. But payware (and some freeware) models are improvements over the default aircraft, so you should look at other (add-on) aircraft.
  13. If you are including Hardware in your "make the experience more immersive" aim, then I would say a TrackIR would hugely increase immersion when using the PMDG NGX.
  14. Winner: FTX Global Runner up: Majestic Q400
  15. That Dusseldorf is great, and I don't have a EDDL in my sim, so grabbing this! Euuurrrrghhhh........ this is for X-Plane. I've just been sick in my mouth!!!! (joke ) PS..... Ha ha ha, loving the siggie Chris!...... I am 100% FSX myself now, hence the disappearance of my sig  .... but will be back to P3D2 after it's updated and we actually get some aircraft for it!
  16. Thanks very much Lee, I polished them especially for this flight!
  17. The Maddog has more systems coverage and better sounds (especially in the cockpit), but the VC texturing is very hard to get away with by today's standards. It's the only thing that let's it down, but for sufficiently for me to have retired it and only fly the Coolsky now.
  18. What a co-incidence eh Alan! (Alan and I were just chatting on PM about the Coolsky MD-80 Pro over the last few days). Yes I agree Tim, a real classic and has that "magic" feel to the flight handling characteristics. I do feel it has been eclipsed by the DC-9 now in terms of state of the art, but the Coolsky MD-80 Pro is still an amazing add-on in it's own right, offering some great things that the DC-9 doesn't have (like an excellent, full featured FMS). I'd say the Coolsky DC-9 and MD-80 Pro are both must-haves for the airliner fan.
  19. I did wonder......... but actually, I don't think he is trolling. I think he's just someone casually into FS and who just maybe comes here every 6-12 months, and instead of reading and catching up, just asks pretty basic questions. But it is a discussion forum and it's snobbish of us to look down on those not yet as absorbed into the hobby, and asking basic questions. I do agree that the thread has gotten far too repetitive and self indulgent though. It was probably sufficient to say to him, yep, MS has abandoned them both, so neither will have new content, but FSX has a huge 3rd party development aspect.
  20. Regarding the FP in ASN, when I was using the trial I selected "Auto load simulator flight plan" is ASN's SETTINGS page, and it then pulls the FP from FSX. So with this option checked, it was just a case of starting ASN, then starting FSX and off you go; any subsequent FP loaded into the FSX Planner would be 'sucked' to ASN. Good feature. (Oh and Opus does exactly the same).
  21. To the Majestic guys, I've tried the new v1.008 and it is fantastic! ......... Among other very noticeable changes and improvements, I noticed that the APPR mode is no longer 'losing' the signal and reverting to PITCH mode. It still requires very careful supplementary power control to stay on the GS but I believe this is true of any aircraft without an autothrottle, where manual power and speed control is required. On approach into EGNT the new turbulance activity was very obvious with some very convincing lumps and bumps! The only negative point I could make about the new version is that FSX will still not close after a session with the Q400. For me, it will still hang until the process is closed via Task Manager. Superb work!
