320Mb Vram enough for 1900x1200

Is 320Mb Vram to run FSX in 1900x1200 mode on a 24" panel with 4x AA and 16x AFHappy landings...

Nope! Had an 8800GTS 320 running a 22" at 1600x1050 and it pegged Memset at max with any appreciable settings. Upgraded to the 640 and had no problems. The extra $$ is worth it at that resolution and depending on how many beels and whistles your CPU can support w/o a slide show you might consider a 740. For me, I felt it was overkill but YMMV.VicVisit the Virtual Pilot's Centerwww.flightadventures.comRadar Contact Supporter: http://www.jdtllc.com/

Mace, as you know---I have a 24 inch LCD that is always running at 1920x1200 reso.I have a 256 MB part, and let me ASSURE you that it runs it just fine.I get 60-70 FPS unlimited in FS9 and a steady non-dipping 30 locked. My friend who bought my copy of FSX from me also now has the Samsung 245BW and the ATI1950 Pro ***256MB*** vid card. I guess he came over here and was sold seeing what that combo did for FS9!I was at his house and with a Pent 3.6 GHz Dell---he gets 24 FPS on the ground at KDTW, 18 at KLAS, and at 1200 feet ASL and higher the FPS climbs to 30-50 FPS. All figures are set at unlimited. This is all at 1920x1200.Hope this helps.Mitch

Mitch -Boy, you and Mike have cost me some bucks!! I went out and got the Saphire ATI X1950 Pro 512mb, as you know, and then went and got the Samsung 24" monitor (your enthusiasm is infectious). I am not sure I see a world of difference, as compared to my old setup----the X850XT platinum edition and my View Sonic G225f. I made this video that includes my FSX and GPU settings so I can compare with your set up. (I think you just fly FS9 though) The last screen shot in the video is one of memstatus and task manager which shows settings after I paused the sim. It doesn't show any GPU memory usage at all. Maybe I don't know how to use it properly----which is entirely possible, or even probable. I am a low tech guy for certain! Anyway, please Let me know your thoughts.Any other comments would be appreciated too! Mike?http://www.mediafire.com/?4ez4twqwioxBruce

Depends on your definition of problems. It will run just fine. At high altitiudes you'll get great framerates but if you get lower to the ground you will get blurries. Especially so if you are running Vista - for some reason it will go to higher framerates and more blurries faster than XP under controlled conditions. With my current system, framerates locked at 20 - all sliders at max except - Autogen to dense, light bloom off, no airplane shadow on self or building shadows on ground AI stuff set to 40% - I get pretty constant 20 unless I have heavy cloud cover - then it gets into the mid teens. In the LAX area it sometimes drops to about 10 BUT the overall quality of the scenery is awesome and I get NO blurries. FWIW, I find Vista *looks* better but XP *flies* better. If I wanted to reduce the settings a bit I could improve on frames but I've always stayed with what *looks* good to me and flies well. I don't care about numbers so to me, frames of 50-60 are nice to talk about but nothing else and there is not a system running today that will give you 50-60 close to the ground without blurries unless the settings are way down.HTH,Vic Q6600 G0 CPU 2.4 o/c 3.6Evga 680i A1 with P30 BIOS 2G XP2-8500 DDR2 1066FSB Mushkin 996535 RAM 5-5-4-12-2T320G 7200 HD partitioined for XP/Vista/Programs 2 - 74G Raptors in RAID0 500G 7200 HD for backup SATA DVD burner Evga 8800GTS 640 PCIx Kandalf LCS case w/ built in liquid cooling 850W Thermaltake power supplyVisit the Virtual Pilot's Centerwww.flightadventures.comRadar Contact Supporter: http://www.jdtllc.com/

Thanks for the replies. I don't think I would have any problems, and if I do I can run it down res'ed a little. The 7800GT was designed to run super high resolutions and was a top-end part.It will last me until the G92's or AMD's equivalent come out.The monitor might come sooner though!RhettAMD 3700+ (@2585 mhz), eVGA 7800GT 256 (Guru3D 93.71), ASUS A8N-E, PC Power 510 SLI, 2gb Corsair XMS 3-3-3-8 (1T), WD 150 gig 10000rpm Raptor, WD 250gig 7200rpm SATA2, Seagate 120gb 5400 rpm external HD, CoolerMaster Praetorian

Mike?>>http://www.mediafire.com/?4ez4twqwiox>>Bruce-----------------------------------------------------------Hi Bruce,While your X850Plat IS a great card, you did pick up many other things than just raw FPS. Bruce, there are many subtle changes, like how glare and reflection is rendered upon the fuselage of the aircraft. Much nicer and more realistic with the 1950 pro over your X850 and my X800 part. Also, I can give you a tip...and I think you will love it. Change your GLOBAL TEXTURES to the MID (medium setting) That is a major source of your FSX blurred textures. Try it...and you will smile! Make another vid with that setup.I do only fly FS9, but your vid did show a good panorama to myself. It is hard to truly judge off of some one's video, second hand.I knew that the difference between your old card and your new one would not be night and day. That is why I advised you to (if you remember) to stay with your X850XT...BUT...having also said that, you did pick up the AVIVO engine for when you wish to run video content and movies...and on your new (congrats) monitor you are truly HD capable with that 1920x1200 resolution level. That monitor is really going to give you real-world panorama. Work with it, get used to it's output and then get back to us. Having the wide-screen is different than your 4:3 Viewsonic. As you use it, you will start to see the differences in what you see/what you view/how you view it. You'll understand what I mean in a week. If you bought from Future Shop (just if) you have 14 days from purchase to take it back for exchange or full refund as long as all parts are returned and it is still in pristine condition.I'll think of making a video myself, but...a video played back on another person's monitor usually in no way truly resembles what the creator of that vid saw upon his own configuration, so I have avoided them for that reason, or have not been to much swayed by them. There is definitely something lost in the translation.Get out of the big iron for a while and fly at around 3500 feet to compare your old and new parts. But..BE SURE to reduce your GLOBAL TEXTURES in FSX to MID or medium. That cleans up the blurries like you can't believe...and in fact makes for one very nice display. I know this because I was tweaking my friend's computer over a beer or three...:)He now loves it. He gets 24-50 FPS unlimited with FSX running on the average at 75-80 full throttle and Global Textures at MEDIUM.You'll like the tip.....Fly a VFR flight at 2200, and then at 5,500 ASL with Global Texture as I have stated, and make another vid for us to see. :)BTW, I just came back here to edit this comment in...your depth-of-field is amazing in that vid. That shot of you on the tarmac starting to taxi. That is one of the perks of this monitor. Your eyes travel thousands of feet BEHIND you rather than it being a 'condensed' and bunched view. That came through in your vid in spades. You could also see for miles out to the horizon. I assume you were at 1920x1200?Mitch

Mitch -Thanks for the Global Settings to Mid tip. I'll give it a shot. Also, I'll try low and slow and do a video on with that setting. What about the memstatus not showing any gpu memory useage???I'm keeping the monitor, but I'd like to know what settings you have for Brightness and Contrast. I've settled on 45/65 for now. Have not cahnged any others from default. Bruce

I'll have to wrack the brain to remember where that article came from...but it said that that is the usual 'showing'.OK, for my CUSTOM setting here are the numbers to apply:Use MagicColor and the CUSTOM mode.Use the following settings:-------------------------------------------------------Brightness: 68Contrast : 85Red: 26Green: 28Blue: 11Color Tone: CustomGamma: Mode 1I just set up my monitor with the above, and am getting beautiful and saturated colors standing off from the white backgrounds.------------------------------------------------------------------Bruce, give the DYNAMIC CONTRAST CHIP a try out! I now use it exclusively for simulations and games. It regulates the contrast in REAL TIME. If the scene is dark ex; night time, it LOWERS the contrast without you having to do or figure out anything. No bleed through is seen. You also get great color saturation in the upper atmosphere, just as in real life. After quitting your sim---then click on the CUSTOM for desktop work and try the INTERNET for resting the eyes while you peruse AVSIM, etc. All in all, a great and free piece of control software.P.S. Bruce, you'll grow to love a wide-view and you won't be going back to a 4:3 format. You made an excellent choice in the 245BW. Another thing...you must have one HECK of a wife! A new card...a new monitor....so..what are you buying HER? ;)Remember, it is ONLY 75 days to Xmas, LOLOLOLOLOL!Mitch

Drop the GLOBAL TEXTURES to a setting of MID/Medium.The blurries will vanish....and ground textures will become clear and crisp.Try a test flight at 2200 to 3500 ft ASL. After that, go higher. You will be amazed at this simple find....This is for FSX only. FS9 does not suffer from this...Mitch

True, Mitch but considering the OP question isn't this like saying that a 128M Video card will work if you turn off the bells and whistles? Turning down the settings has been the main way to resolve various issues in FSX from day one but some folks want their eye candy AND good performance.Q6600 G0 CPU 2.4 o/c 3.6Evga 680i A1 with P30 BIOS 2G XP2-8500 DDR2 1066FSB Mushkin 996535 RAM 5-5-4-12-2T320G 7200 HD partitioined for XP/Vista/Programs 2 - 74G Raptors in RAID0 500G 7200 HD for backup SATA DVD burner Evga 8800GTS 640 PCIx Kandalf LCS case w/ built in liquid cooling 850W Thermaltake power supplyVisit the Virtual Pilot's Centerwww.flightadventures.comRadar Contact Supporter: http://www.jdtllc.com/
