December 14, 200916 yr Hi Guys,I could really use some advice on trying to improve my FPS because it seems im reading all over the forum people with not disimilar spec's to mind are getting much better performance.I am running FSX Acceleration with latest SP's.Addons wise i have;Active Sky,X Graphics,Just Flight VFR Scenery for Great Britain PMG MD11Captain Sim 757MADDOG MD80LEVEL D 767FS2 Crew for MD 11 (i dont use this any more)The spec of my machine is this,Intel Dual Core E8500 3.16 GHz4.00GB DDR 2 1066 memoryNVIDIA Gefocre XFX GTX+ 9800 250GB HDD think its 5400 rpmSo i have just loaded the Demo of UT2 onto my machine and am getting an FPS of around 9-11. I have reduced my scenery sliders down to around a quarter to try to improve this but with no success. So no i have uninstalled it, im thinking of trying my traffic or traffic X next. But to be honest im more concerned with getting my FPS up i usually get around the 19 FPS mark when using FSX normally and that with the scenery sliders at around halfway. So does anyone have any ideas of squeezing abit more out of FSX, or even which display options are the most important to play around with???In terms of upgrading my machine, i have been tempted by DDR3 memory and possibly at a bug push a quad core processor. But id rather not go down this route just yet.ThanksTom Tom Why not read some useful tips and tricks - http://forum.avsim.n...22#entry1965722

December 14, 200916 yr Autogen density, try and reduce that. You can also edit the fsx-config file and reduce the amount of (autogen) buildings and trees.Proper settings for your GPU via nHancer, follow guide here http://www.simforums.com/forums/forum_post...aphics+problemsAnd make sure to defrag your harddrive after you "I´ll rather be down here wishing I was up there than be up there wishing I was down here"
December 14, 200916 yr The best advice I can give you if you don't mind spending a few more bucks on FSX is to use the services of www.fs-gs.com Not only will your machine run FSX at it's max, you will no longer have to wade through all the 'fixes and tweaks' in the forums trying to figure out what works best for you. I am not affiliated with them, just one happy customer.
December 14, 200916 yr Your system is actually pretty good, that said1) your hard-drive seems slow at 5400 RPM, also it has a small capacity I would consider getting a larger HD with a 32mb cache and filling less than half of it. prob 1 - 1.5 TB.2) Overclock your CPU if you are comfortable with it, that CPU could easily go to 3.9 or 4.0 ghz. You will need better cooling for this. If you want a computer service shop could do the overclock.I would also recommend FS-GS.

If the microsoft performance monitor is anything to go by the HDD is certainly the slowest part of my machine Tom Why not read some useful tips and tricks - http://forum.avsim.n...22#entry1965722

December 14, 200916 yr What does it do?Disregard. I get the point of the service now :( "I´ll rather be down here wishing I was up there than be up there wishing I was down here"
December 14, 200916 yr What does it do?Disregard. I get the point of the service now :(Their website doesn't really tell you the whole story. They look at your machine, then spend about 8 hours over 2 days optimizing it for FS. When they are finished, your machine will be running at it's peak performance with FS and that usually means most sliders maxed and great FPS. Additionally, once a customer, always a customer, they have the best follow-up support I have ever seen. The bottom line is when they are done, all YOU have to do is go fly and enjoy FS. What you DON'T have to do anymore is waste time and effort trying to figure out what 'tweaks' work for you, experimenting with every fix ever posted, wading through 'fix it guides' and 'pdf's. hoping someones elses ideas work for you.Simply fly and have fun, it's a cheap price to pay considering what the average simmer already has invested in FS :(
December 15, 200916 yr Commercial Member Three very simple tweaks will get you some frames:1) Turn off Aircraft cast shadows on ground and self. ~15 FPS2) Turn off Light Bloom ~15 FPS3) Water quality to 2x Low. 2x High will eat about ~10 FPSTo help with Blurries:1) Keep the LOD_RADIUS at 4.5.2) TEXTURE_BANDWIDTH_MULTI at 70-100. Above 90 will cause micro-stuttersVideo driver settings:1) Turn off SuperSampling2) Set AA to 2x and Overide App. I may be getting old but I can't tell any difference between 2x and 4x. ~10 FPSAs usual your mileage will vary depending on how smart you are.Happy Holidaysjja Jim Allen[email protected]SkyPilot Software home of FSXAssist / P3DAssist
December 16, 200916 yr Author Well I have installed nhancer to begin with and set it up as per the link. This has made a huge difference.I reduced water effects and switched off shadows as stated above.Iv also put my traffic 2010 on and this is running at 50% traffic and I'm getting from 25 to 50fps now so i'm well impressed. I'm still going to install a new hdd and want to experiment with ultimate traffic 2 and see how that goes but so far so good.as for overclocking I haven't bothered doing that because I'll prolly break something. December 16, 200916 yr Commercial Member I'm still going to install a new hdd and want to experiment with ultimate traffic 2 and see how that goes but so far so good.UT2 has a service pack currently being beta tested, and one of the items in the service pack is performance improvements. You might want to get hold of that, it's available to all customers. www.supertrafficboard.com
December 21, 200916 yr I have UT2. Yes, new SP is in developement, the performance improved a lot! Like, A LOT! But the beta SP has also a lot of bugs.. well, it's beta.To be fair.. I almost bought MyTrafficX a few weeks ago because of poor performance with UT2 and I have a very good machine. I want some airplanes in the sky & stuff, but if I wanted decent performance with UT2 I had to drop AI traffic below 40% (I'm talking big airports, because I fly 767 most of the time) but this resulted in very quiet skies. With new SP I can run traffic at 100% with a very similar FPS than before at 40% but the skies are now finally full. I'm talking about UT2 SP beta 1.The only performance advice you should know... NickN's tuning guide. It's all there. Tomaz Drnovsek My FSX Videos My AVSIM Gallery
