Look Ma'w - Nutin' But Clouds

Featured Replies

I read in another forum somewhere that folks used edit the fs9.cfg and change the cloud-density slider setting from the default max setting of 8, to a hand-edited value of 12. I decided to see if this had any affect in my FSX environment by editing the same setting in my fsx.cfg file. So far, on my first flight with the hand edit, I have the best cloud coverage at FL350 that I think I've ever seen.Using a text editor, I changed CLOUD_COVERAGE_DENSITY=8 to CLOUD_COVERAGE_DENSITY=12. This will not stick if you change any FSX settings using the GUI - you will have to re-edit the file by hand again. The below was taken using Saturday Dec19 14Z historic weather (Saturday's bad weather) heading norhtbound out of KMIA at FL350, towards KIAD :( . I run ASA sp1 with DWC disabled (for RC) and REX2 (4096) clouds.Try over-driving this "Cloud Coverage" slider (with a value of 12) yourself and see if it keeps your lower cloud-layers from disapearing while at altitude. As they say, I picture is worth a thousand words:FSX, PMDG MD-11 @ FL350

Thanks Al,As far as I know you are the first to try this with FSX, and report the results!

hmmmm, probably not for me since maximum cloud coverage huts my performance. Interesting find though!

Just to clarify, this isn't maximum cloud coverage as in nm of cloud coverage, this the cloud density slider which most folks alreay have set to maximum anyway. Give it shot. For comparisoin sake, the screenshot link above is with the coverage slider set to 70nm, 1 notch above minimum.

Yep I run high normally. High looks good with almost no fps hit for us lowly souls running older pc's. Max is nice but really kills my fps while down low in the clouds

Since my head is usually in the clouds when I try to change stuff like this, I have a question. Where do I find this .cfg file. I looked in my Microsoft games\fsx folder, but I can't find a "fsx.cfg" file. What exactly am I looking for? Thanks,

Locked at 25, with cloud_draw_distance 110 miles, coverage_density - max, detailed clouds on: it depends upon the weather type selected, but 100% coverage , tops at 12000, flying at 18000 - there is no change in the frame rate. Starting up ASA will reduce the "12" to "6".i7-350 running at 4.05 gig, Win7-32 in performance mode, P6T.

Paul,Are you sure? I ask because we don't read or write anything to the .cfg file. When people did this in FS9 nobody reported that the value changed back when ASA was run. Thanks,

I also read about this somewhere but haven't tried it yet. Does ASA change the max setting from 8 to 6?
