Look Ma'w - Nutin' But Clouds

Featured Replies

I did it a couple weeks ago, works very well for me. I'm using REX textures, alternate between REX weather and ASA. No major difference in fps with the ccd at 12. I have a quad 9300 with nVidia 8800 card. This image is heavy overcast after my descent through the clouds. It was fun! Curt

Jeff,The maximum value using the FS interface is 6 just as in FS04. The new "super" value that users are trying is 12. 8 hasn't been mentioned except on the octopus for your local hockey team!

Fantastic, I will be trying this over the holidays.

Oh, sorry, I thought I read somewhere it was 8.BTW Jim, I don't think we are going to be seeing a lot of octopi this year :(

Paul,Are you sure? I ask because we don't read or write anything to the .cfg file. When people did this in FS9 nobody reported that the value changed back when ASA was run. Thanks,
I just presumed this is what happened, Jim: I changed the setting to 12, and then flew the A2A Spit around Renton for a few minutes using each of the default weather scenarios, then I paused the sim, started ASA, and continued with that weather, so I don't know what happened. I didn't change anything else, but after the shutdown I looked at the cfg file again, and it was at 6.Al stated
I changed CLOUD_COVERAGE_DENSITY=8 to CLOUD_COVERAGE_DENSITY=12. This will not stick if you change any FSX settings using the GUI - you will have to re-edit the file by hand again.
, and maybe switching out to ASA and coming back to FS triggered the change: I don't know...... It certainly provides a very full overcast, and that's something I've never seen before - but I've also never had anything like an oc'd 950 before either.

FWIW, my "CLOUD_COVEAGE_DENSITY=12" setting in my fsx.cfg file is exactly the same this morning as it was during my flight yesterday. But worth noting, is the fact that I never touched any FSX settings using the GUI during the flight yesterday.

Hi Everyone,It is correct that changing any slider or option in FS that gets written to the FS.cfg file will change any "super value" back down to its maximum value as the whole cfg file is re-written. I would still like users to keep testing this out and double checking their values once AS and FS are run and closed down. Pretty sure that for FS04 we are good to go for this. Now just with FSX.

OK, Jimmy; I'll give it a whirl again tonight! If it does prove to be a bug-free, easy mod - will you be adding it into ASA?

...or Tim into REX2?

Hi All,No, we will not add this, even as an option, into ASA. However, I would consider making a sticky post pointing out the possible benefits and impacts of this. I am not aware of how other environmental programs that need to change maximum values to "super values" handle this type of situation.

Great idea, IMO. We'll continue to watch this space, and if there is enough demand, I don't see why not.

If anyone is interested, the setting you are talking about can be inserted into the new freeware ORBX FSX Go, and it wont revert back to default. You can start FSX via the programme and to a saved flight with all changes you want to the config. No need to keep lots of different configs for different flights/settings etc. Take a look at the site at Flightsimstore. I NEVER tweaked anything before but this prog rocks as far as I am concerned. No affiliation.

CORRECTION: FSX Go is payware not freeware,,,, the price of beer !

OK.. Set it to 12, set up a cumulus layer, 3-7000, flew the Spit from FlightOntario's Buttonville (which works just fine in FSX) to about 13000, changed to the RA Spit, went to 24k, cloud setting at 110 miles, Detailed Clouds, maximum density: I went through a few of the weather scenarios again, and then landed and ended the flight. I then started a similar flight at SanDiego, same conditions, but the cover wasn't there. I exited after landing, and here is the fsx.cfg:- It had changed back to 8, but has nothing to do with REX or ASA, so I restarted everything and did a single flight, same place, same weather, but this time just landed and exited the sim. This time there was no change - the 12 stayed:- I think any time it needs to read the cfg file, it resets the increased values back to the FSX default maximums. So Al is correct, but with a much broader impact - "This will not stick if you change any FSX settings using the GUI".. This looks like it means any settings whatsoever, at any time, so if you do two flights - back to 8 for the second flight. It's still a heck of a find, though. 4 stars.

I found the same results. Looks like Ill be making a shortcut to the FSX.cfg file on my desktop.Rob

Guys,The cfg. file is read each time FS starts. It is saved if you change a setting in FS and then the super value is set back.
