'Real' pilots and FSX

Featured Replies

Got my private pilot license in 2001 at Schaumburg Airport (about 8 miles west of O'Hare). I fly mostly piper cherokee 160s and 180s and have a few hours in Cessna 172 and Diamond Eclipse. My certification is strictly single engine land. Of all the planes, I most prefer the Piper Archer / Warrior. Now I fly out of Lake in the Hills Airport (3CK) in the Northwest Chicagoland area. Oh yeah, I have about 170 hours logged and don't fly nearly as much as I want to these days, but that should change in the near term.

Learned on FS, beginning at age 10, with version 5.Got my PPL at 17. I think we were on FS8 then.70 hours to date. Would love to get the -IA and -MEL at some point, but school and work are likely to put that off for at least the next few years.Good thing FSX is so darn good.
Love this thread. In my case-simmed from 1981 to 1989 when my wife got ticked at all the time I spent on the computer and got me real flying lessons. Now since flying for 20 years rw-find fsx keeps the rust off and saves me lots of money. Can't ask for more than that-especially with the cost of avgas today.. and yes-fsx is good...especially when it is saving me that real $$$

Couldn't agree more...the savings from simming compared to the real thing is worth its weight in gold. Of course, my wife doesn't seem to care for the simming or the real flying. Oh well, you can't win them all. A good justification for all of the money I spend on addons is "But just think, I got three addons for the cost of one hour of aircraft rental." The wife still doesn't buy it though.

PPL ASEL, a little under 60 hrs, not much PIC time. Mainly I did it for my course in air traffic control at the university... I'm not current and need a BFR, but my medical is good, it has to be for ATC....For which I have hundreds of hours as an Air Traffic Control Specialist with the FAA.I think my info is on the faa's site, if anyone doesn't believe me.

Single engine private license (aircraft) with instrument rating. Around 300 hours, mainly in CO and CA. Simming is never quite like the real thing but pleasantly different- like staying home and watching the football on TV with all the luxury of my own home and great camera shots, compared to actually being at the game- the 2 will never be the same but are pleasantly different in their respective ways.Bruce.

Apparently the op doesn't believe some threads where users claim to be rw pilots, or at least that's what I gathered from it.... I'd like to view some examples of that 70-80% as to the point of the thread.... errrr, maybe to see who has what. But we are all just usernames on a forum :)

ASEL PPLAbout 130 Hrs in C150/152s and about 4 Hrs in an Archer 180. Flew the Archer to Fon Du Lac via Midway for Osh Kosh a few years back..Probably another 45 Hrs right seat in Baron 58 and Piper Navaho with a Charter Pilot buddy who mentored me toward the PPL. :(

Although I appreciate the enthusiasm of some of the members, I would rather rely on the FARs for real world knowledge, instead of the advice of someone (a name) on an FSX forum. There's much to be absorbed, but a student pilot should be advised to check with his CFI or the FARs before embarking into the unknown. I do think that many great people here offer some excellent advice. I don't think that we need to post our credentials for a sim site.

Haven't given advice on the forum, but since you asked, ASEL PPL, Commercial, Instrument. Some time in gliders but no rating.

Ya missed the point. Over time I have seen, as I am sure other RW pilots have, NON pilots telling others how to 'fly' and explaining various aspects about flight. Most of the time it's just entertaining to watch, but sometimes it's just completely erronous. I was just curious as to who here was a 'RW' pilot, as it gives credibility to their posts when they try to help others. One recent example is a user explaining that you should NEVER use VS or FLC because the FMC ALWAYS flys the plane, which is about as far from real life as you can get, there are many other examples for those that care to look. Now back to the thread, these replies are making me feel my age! When I learned, it was books and blackboard, I never even owned a computer or heard of FS until the early 90's, man am I feeling old! Here is the reason I have been flying FSX a lot, since I have been 'grounded'. These are after Hurricane Wilma, and a few months ago test running the motor. Still need to finish the interior and hopefully soon she is ready to fly again, in time for Sun N Fun.180hp PenYan conversion, STOL kit, exhaust mod(extra 20 hp), 145kts cruise

PPL SEL in 1975 at age 18. 180 Hours logged on C150/152, C172, Piper 140, Piper Warrior and Grumman AA-5 Tiger. Completed Commercial Ground School and have about 10 hours under the hood. Haven't been at the controls in real life since 1982. A lot has changed since then. Too expensive a hobby when starting a family and a different career path. FSX is a great way to enjoy this passion for flight, learn more and keep up with some of the changes without the huge expense or real world flying. I am tempted to go up with a CFI and get behind the controls again just for old times sake.RegardsMartin

Began flying in 1957. Comm'l, Instrum, glider. 3100+But of course the initials and the hours provide as much comparative information as our computer "signatures". 1000 hours of multi-crew experience will yield a totally different result than 1000 hours of solo bush flying in Alaska. :( :( Kingfish :(

Not enough hours in a PA-28-161. Do you lot know how ludicrously expensive flying training is in the UK?? Will complete my PPL one day.... Too many hours simming and dreaming....Far too many hours on motorcycles. Now THAT'S flying! :( Ian

U42 ! :( Have you seen that "good looking" RV over there...............that's yellow/grey with WWII invasion strips and a b/w checkered tail? edit: pic attachedL.Adamson --- U42, hangar on the south end, across from the new ones.
Mr. Adamson,That RV is GORGEOUS!. The prettiest one I have seen....ever. OT: In 1964 I sold my hotrod Chevy and used the money to learn to fly. I went on to a short stint with United but didn't like the life style so I quit and went back to general aviation. Accumulated approximately 12,000 hours over the years. About 8000 of it teaching. Now retired.
