[BufferPools] PoolSize=0 the holy grail of FSX performance...

No, THIS is my last!Hear this:Some "tweak-geeks"* have completely hi-jacked anything here at Avsim that has to do with FSX and it's settings, and if other people dare say anything against it, or God forbid, tell them that is does not work, it's unstable, and it's a joke that you have to eradicate shaders, and what not, turn the sliders down and what not, to make them work!Come on, are you a bunch of amateurs all of you????Take a look at this thread, it's an embarrasment, nothing less... :( * Why don't they fly instead, the geeks???

Hi,I run a three monitor setup, thats why I tried Nick's small halo.bmp file, it works great and AI Aircraft lighting looks good at a distance with the settings I run. AI Aircraft lighting is not large. The file can be found here at AVSIM,just do a file search for Nick Needham.
Thanks Mike, appreciate the help.

LOL.Some people just don't get it!Now back to tweaking.....

...... but David Roch can do it too! This has been a very good, civil discourse on how to further the sim, so that it can make full use of the very latest procs and gpu's on the market. This has all spontaneously happened as a result of *******'s first post, and must have helped hundreds of us - if not thousands. Since moving to Win7-32 I have gone to Win7-64, wiped it gone to XP-64, wiped it and gone back to Win7-64 (done properly, this time) - all because I was couldn't get the benefit that I felt I should have from some of the suggestions here. The clincher came after the last rebuild to Win7-64 - finally BP=0 worked as ******* said it should, so last night I purchased an ATI 5870 gpu (my 8900GTX is for sale, hint-hint) and she is now FLYING. What a HUGE difference. I haven't tried a whole load of tweaking since last night, but MyTrafficX pops at least 30-plus aircraft into KSEA, the same at KBFI - and Renton is packed. Those sliders at 29% each. Moderate clouds are REX w/ASE, FTX PNW installed and she's locked at 24. Smoooth. So Thank You to all you "embarrassing, amateur, tweak-geeks" for all your efforts. It's been great.

Mitch. About 6 months ago it was your saga regarding your new i7/285 combo that enthralled me and very soon (days!!) after I got the same combo. You were clearly delighted at the results you were seeing especially clarity and smoothness...almost to the point of flawless. Has anything happened recently to make you seek the BufferPool tweak to enhance what was already running just fine?I have followed this topic with avid interest and have been experimenting. My standard performance on SMOOTHNESS is dependent on location and settings for the peripharals like AG/AI/Weather etc, but I can always get a completely smooth flight by downgrading my settings accordingly.Like you, I have tried other OP's experimental settings advised here but in my case nothing has shown stability. I then tried your latest settings and again no joy. If I do get a result it is only for a short time without something graphically going wrong, or if I change a plane, location or weather setting FSX will not return and I get graphics glitches everywhere. My system does not like any BufferPool entry in the cfg at all.I am interested to know from you why you are keen to have a BufferPool setting of 0 which apparently works if you dumb down some of the basics like pre-render,trilinear etc when I would have thought you could achieve the same by having your graphics settings higher (like when you first got the combi) and trimming the peripherals? Please carry on with your experiments because I am sure that between all of us we could find that magic button. I for one will always try an experimental tweak because i am seeking to have all my settings running at maximum one day rather than having to "cut my cloth" accordingly.Respectfullyjc--------------------------------------------------------------------------------Hi Jaycee!Well...it's a story about a man named; Jed. I do have, do enjoy, and am always looking for that next 'little fine half-wrist turn of the wrench' thing we all do here at AVSIM. We all have a Collective Tweak Sickness, that one day somebody might find the cure for, like er...let's say a 5 THz CPU/GPU combo, lol.Seriously though, I had been most happy before the O.P. threw this BP=O out there but found as he had, that it gave a truly PERCEPTABLE boost to linear animation. Not a placebo by any means. Not only I, that has seen this when running under the BP=0 mode, but the countless others that keep plugging away on it. There will always be some form of a stutter, micro or greater that will crop up to make you wince here and there, BUT...for whatever reason, and I don't have all the ducks in the row on this one---the BP=0 setting absolutely adds spice to the mix. I have found that a prerender of 3 actually with a fast CPU/GPU makes little advancement to that allure of pure and smooth animation over having it just set to one. I PERCEIVE that I have much more fluidity with BP=0/prerender=1 than with BP>0 and prerender >1. How much more? Totally quantitative, Jaycee. Totally quantitative to the observer. We all have a Collective Passion for squeezing out every last drop of performance from our hobby and the number of pages and the number of hits to this thread totally attests to that! I count myself in with the rest of the sheep....So, in ten thousand words or less, I will probably...no matter HOW SMOOTH I think I have FSX...I will always succumb to the next Holy Grail, for I am a very curious and inquisitive soul by nature...and, and....well.....I'l try it BECAUSE IT IS THERE! :( That really is what drives it.Post Edit: Jaycee, in after reading, and by combining three post observations ie: crank water until the slider bends, lol; drop the prerender to 1, run the latest nVidia 197.13 drivers----did I finally have hours on end in the air and no snow/tear/black screen/partial texture load, etc. I think that to put this BP=0 thing into words as an 'effect'..it would be tagged with the word; SNAP! It just adds, 'SNAP' to the animation. It's the caffeine in the coffee. Sure you can drink decaffeinated, but it's the SNAP that puts the smile on the kisser at the end of the flight....Cheers!Mitch

Geez...if I had a problem with this thread, I would merely pass it on by when entering the Forum. The fact that you are scanning, is that YOU YOURSELF are as curious as the rest of us in where this will go, nonsense or otherwise, and/or what shall be discovered in the quest. Your opinions on the ACTIONS of others doesn't further the effort, but your observations in cause and effect would. We welcome you to do that....Mitch

Same here. :( I think that over the last few years I have posted about 10 to 15 times I had found the perfect setup (or scenery or addon) and that I would stick with that until eternity. Not. That's just how it goes: I always want to get the last drop of juice out of the orange. It's half of the fun. Maybe even 3/4... :(

----------------------------You bet! Here's to raising a glass of fresh-squeezed orange juice to the eternal effort...lol! Now...let's crank up FSX/PNW/Water at FULL MONTY/BP=0/prerender at 1/nVidia 197.13/EZdok/My Traffic X/REX2/GEX/UTX/all the other 'X's that I forgot...and slip off the runway for the 'blue'.... :( Life is good. Well.. you are (of all of us) the one with the 'faster' video card, so, as I said, if BP=0 effectively 'shifts' the balance in FSX to make it more GPU dependant, then a faster vid card is the ticket, you could, with that card probably run aniso 16, AA, and vsync on :)

*******, can you actually explain why is there a snow/black screen/artifacts when GPU gets overloaded? Why don't the FPS simply go down, as it happens with the CPU - what can't be processed, won't be processed and things go slower, as usual. I see at my system, I get snow when I overload my GPU.And why do we have to have Water on High? It eats my FPS away... for no better visual appearance.

I'll do my best to make an non technical analogy...Imagine you have:1) A Pen (speech writer)2) A sheet of paper3) A speaker (person) who 'reads' what is being written to the piece of paper by the speech writer. The PEN (speech writer) is your CPU, The sheet of Paper is the 'Command (ring) buffer' and the speaker is a GPU (video card)you have a particular situation in the above example.. in a perfect world, the CPU (Pen+speech writer) will 'fill' the piece of paper at a speed that will allow the 'speaker' to read it... the speech writer (PEN) will NOT stop writing.. so, when it completely fills a page, it needs to swap it for a new one.. how does the speaker react to this situation if he is not finished reading yet? he gets confused, out of sync his eyes roll and he tries to get in sync not knowing where to start. The bufferpool PREVENTS the above from happening, because even if the page is completely filled the speaker will be able to actually READ IT FULLY! (the buffer is like having someone swap the piece of paper for a new one, but HOLD onto the old one for you to read...) unfortunately, the speaker will lag behind the speech writer, but, BOTH will be able to do their jobs at max capacity to the audience satisfaction.confusing? or a little more clear?

*******,Works for me, if it is a good parable, it is well understood. Thanks.StephenPS I have been tweaking in a different way, went to 4.4ghz, everything good on OCCT, got nervous, dialed back to 4.3ghz and stable and cool. OK, back to testing bufferzones=0.

Its a bit more complicated than that... a 'CPU' doesn't receive 'instructions' from another device, a CPU simply 'executes' instructions based on software programming, in programming you usually don't have sync issues, what you have is something called race conditions that could happen because something terminated 'earlier' (or after) it was supposed to and messes up your whole program... we could start talking about semaphores here but It'll simply get more confusing :)a GPU, receives 'instructions' (to render triangles) from a CPU... if the CPU delivers more instructions to the GPU than what it is able to hanlde you stall it, the GPU will go crazy, get confused, desperately trying to get in sync (and the CPU will never stop sending the instructions) so you enter into a spiral of death :) the driver crashes, TDR detects a dead driver, restarts it, and while doing all that the CPU keeps sending instructions for the video driver to process.. no wonder you see snow :) And, to make something absolutely clear.. (specially to NOK and all the naysayers), I never said having BufferPools with high values was 'bad' in fact, it is designed like that FOR A REASON... A good reason, however.. there are people like me and countless others that want to squeeze the last drop of juice from the orange.. thats why we do it! if you don't want to experiment, then, for god sake leave us alone, ignore this thread and try something positive to do instead of trolling.

And one last thing to remember when testing FSX. Even if you don't tweek.. FSX will perform variably each day. Depends on the situation.Kind of like ham radios back in the 50s and 60s. Station clarity would change based on the atmospheric conditions.jja :(
