Lookings for good aviation books

Featured Replies

Hey, I'm looking for some suggestions on aviation books. I'm more interested in either general aviation or commercial flying. I really enjoy reading the Plane and Pilot and Flying magazines, especially the articles that pilots write about some particular experience they had when they were flying or a detailed explanation of a crash, etc. I'm looking for it to be more laid back, good stories, and geared toward pilots or at least aviation enthusiasts, so they use proper terms, and dont spend too much time explaining as if they are talking to the general public. Pretty much like the articles in Plane and Pilot, but longer... : ) Any ideas to get me started??

Hi, Red,"Fate is the hunter by Ernest Gann"I just got it myself so I can't say what it's about in detail but it was recommended by a friend (also Avsim member) who has great taste. It seems to suit what you're looking for. Also, I've found Ask the Pilot by Patrick Smith to be an extremely pleasant read. Looking for those on Amazon you should come across plenty more in the same range.

Second that. Good book for what you're looking for, Red.

I have "Aftermath" which was published by the editors of the FLYING magazine. Phenomenal book primarily geared towards GA pilots, a collection of some of the most famous aircraft accidents - you learn a LOT reading this book. This is a collection of the best 'Aftermath' feature articles from FLYING, if you like writings of Peter Garrison then this is a real gem. It should be a mandatory reading for every pilot.

Here's a couple of interesting ones to read."The Mystery of Flight 427" by Bill Adair, which delved into the investigation of 2 related Boeing 737 crashes, and to change tack, a really funny novel about a flight attendant's personal experiences called "The Plane Truth, Shift Happens at 35,000 Feet" by A. Frank Steward. Both of these you should still be able to obtain since they are more recent. Another good one which might be a little harder to find is called "Freefall, 41,000 Feet and Out of Fuel" by William Hoffer and Marilyn Mona Hoffer, which gives a nail biting account of an Canada Air 767 that runs out of fuel over the Canadian wilderness.

This is not so much a book but a website run by a former Malaysia Airlines 777 Captain who answers hundreds if not thousands of questions from enthusiasts from around the world about flying and aviation. http://www.askcaptainlim.com/ :(

Going on vacation for a week in a few days, bought Fate is a Hunter to keep me company for now. Again, thanks for all the suggestions.

On of the best aviation books I've read is, EMERGENCY! Crisis In The Cockpit by Stanley Stewart. This book details a number of incidents in which heroic efforts by the flight crews results in positive outcomes in the face of potential disaster.

Flying Magazine collected the 'I learned about flying from that' series into several books that are more or less available. Some are out of print but usually can be found as used books...DJ
