Display Driver stopped and recovered

Featured Replies

Hi everybody,It seems like I dont have any luck with pc,s. Last year I had Dell xps 730 quite a powerfull machine. Unfortunately after a year it just went down tried to fix it, dell send me tech people but nothing. Finally they came to the solution of either a replacement or a refund, which I chose a replacement. Now they gave me an alienware with the same specs as I had except now I have windows 7 64 bit ultimate from Windows vista 64 bit HP and ATI 5800 series HD 2gb instead of the Nvidia gtx 285 1gb.Since I got my new pc I keep on getting this error "Display Driver AMD stopped working and has recovered". Mind you I did get this error from my previous pc and I had Nvidia not ATI graphics card but I use to get only during FSX, and not from the beginining of when I had the pc. Now with this new pc I get it while I am on the pc doing things and it happens literally a few times every minute which is impossible to cope with, I went on forums and it seems it's a pretty common error but so far no fix.If somebody encountered the error and manged to fix it (even if not) could you please post it on this thread. ThanksPatrick

Backup and delete the fsx.cfg file see if it goes away.I had lots of Dells between myself, daughter and ex wife over the years but no more. I am building my own with parts from newegg for one third the cost and better performance.

I'd suggest using something like Guru3D Driver Sweeper to fully clean out the driver, then clean install the current one off of ATI's site (not off of Dell's).You want to uninstall anything ATI related first through the control panel (do not reboot if it asks) and then run Driver Sweeper. Reboot after that and it should come up fully clean.

How ironic I have a Dell XPS 420 and I get driver failures constantly. ATI is a piece of crap! Thought about putting in my old 8600 in. I am going to try what Ryan said.

This sometimes happens to me when I'm running open GL applications (Photoshop CS4) along side DirectX aps (3D Studio Max, FSX and other games). If you are running other background graphical applications, try shutting them down prior to firing up a game. Not sure if this applies to your situation or not....

what do you mean ATI is a piece of crap!?!?!!? i have had my ATI card for a while and i have NEVER had a driver failure!

This is my first ATI card and I have had troubles with it ever since I have had this computer(1.5 years) Maybe the card is faulty? ATI doesn't like FSX either.

listen, how is your cooling. is your tower in a closed space and how many fans are in it? plus, where are you getting the drivers from? and last, what card is it and who makes it? (ATI doesn't make every card, my card was made by diamond.)

I have been getting my drivers from ATI after a clean install of windows 7 in January. I don't know who makes it because its a dell. In power play(underclocks) I get around 70 but when I get rid of that on idle its like 75 with 50 or 60% fan speed. the problem is it crashes idling. I don't have to do anything. Although most of the time it crashes running watching youtube. I think there is somethign wrong with the card because last winter I took my computer into a COLD room and it was crashing every other second.

Its nothing to do with ATI, use to get the error even when I had Nvidia but in different situations and no so often.Patrick

Hmmm I have owned nvidia cards longer than I have owned this ATI card and never experienced a problem with nvidia.

Seems to be a fairly random issue. I had a 9600GT that did this constantly in FSX, replaced with an ATI4870, then 5870 and never seen it again.

I have a GTX295 and 260 and see it all the time, but like Vin said, normally because I have Photoshop running in the background. There are other apps other than photoshop of course that are open GL, but for me it's PS. I also always do as Ryan recommended when I change drivers with a full nvidia cleaner since despite the years of progression with installers/uninstallers they still leave lots of traces behind and rather never take any chances :(.

I have had this issue over the last two years now, and believe me I have tried ALL suggestions wich can be found on the web.Two years ago I have bought two new RAM sticks and shortly after that the error started.Because of the message I thought of a graphical reason and checked and replaced my Grafic card (8800GTS)I have then also done several RAM tests...Mem Test etcI have stocked up my cooling (what was not really a problem before)I have changed from Vista 64 to W7 64 (what is beside this error a good change)I have changed my MotherboardAs I wrote I have tried countless tweaks and tricks. But one day, after two years, I have pulled out one of my RAM sticks and the error was gone!!!I bought two new sticks (no cheap one) and the error was coming back again, till I found out, that one of the new sticks was also faulty.Replaced it again and have had no single error message since then.Note, that all RAM tests, like MemTest, haven't found the faulty RAM!And note, that brand new RAM sticks could be damaged!Thats my story, maybe this helps a bit...p.s. I have also Photoshop and all the graphical stuff and could be run all together iclusive FSX without any error now.So, this issue is NOT software related!
