This is a totally incorrect assumption .. no way you know what the entire enthusiast community will do.  If you would have just looked at the current poll results you would have seen that its all over the map.  :(
I said what I would do. Please read more slowly and stop making assumptions yourself.

you said, "Die hard flightsimmers will never spend a penny beyond the initial cost of the game!", not me!

No. I am not against subscription models in certain scenarios, as I do play the occasional MMORPG, however I don't feel I'd get the same entertainment value from a sub-based FS. In a MMORPG, you group up with people to overcome obstacles and in the process you build camaraderie and friendships. I count that, along with many other aspects of the genre, as part of the value I get for my monthly payment. With FS, I am perfectly happy to go it alone and I enjoy the ability to insert add-ons at my leisure, whether payware or freeware. There is nothing I can think of that would entice me to pay a regular fee above and beyond purchase price that I can't get in FS9 or FSX right now, either free or as an elective additional purchase. If Flight is subscription-based, I will not be participating.Incidentally, for that lunch offer, I'm partial to Ruth's Chris Steakhouse. We have one here in Seattle. :D

That was a joke, obviously you missed it (or are just trying really hard to argue?) Hence the smiley at the end. Many flightsimmers of course do spend tons and tons on add-ons, just not in a subscription based model.

you are the one arguing .. ppl use lol all the time and dont mean lol.... this the downside of written communication.
Would I? Absolutely. I've played many subscription based online games, and I'd welcome the influx of development cash such a system would bring to Flight sims. Of course, the details would need to be right, such as a real world interactive ATC environment, real weather, real nav procedures, aiplanes that know how to slip, etc. And paramount would be an integrated online marketplace for addon items like aircraft, scenerey etc.It could be done "right" and if so, would be more than worth the usual $15/month fee. Then again, I'm also a guy who would have gladly paid $200 for an FSX version with all the suck removed, so maybe I'm not typical...
Hey I'm with you, its funny how people have actually bought or upgraded their system($1000 or more) like myself to run FSX of even FS9. I have probably bought over $2000(from REX, aerosoft products, Orbx, Flight1 products, etc) on all the add ons throughout the years and lets not forget about "triple head to go" to run my 3 LCDs, then theres my gofligh products, radio stack, overhead switches, etc. Oh, lets see , almost forgot my thottle controls, rudder pedals, yoke, and we are actually gonna bark at paying a monthly fee. We should look at it as I'll pay, but it better be damn worth it vs. " I have principles" if goes that directions I'll leave. Geez peopl.and FYI, I have been simming since 1988, have been on avsim and flightsim for over 5 years(all MSFS ,flight unlimited1 and 2 Pro pilot), just never posted much and finally registered here over a years ago.
I call BS on all of you :) If FS11 shows up with great flight models, a multi player universe, real time dynamic weather that changes smoothly over time, great ATC including SIDS/STARS, good visuals with excellent performance on mortal hardware, an "app store" paradigm for purchasing payware add-ons, AND does it for a nominal monthly subscription, each one of you will buy it! EACH and EVERY one of you, and you'd be foolish not to. You can protest with some anti-capitalist proletariat rant if you like, but you know I'm right.Lunch is on me if proven wrong ;)
EXACTLY!!! Here's my card..where do I sign up...LOL
Just to throw this in. I also am into racing simulators, first there was Grand Prix Legends, then Nascar 2003, Arca and now iRacing which is subscription based. It is very professional and was started by John Henry who owns the Boston Red Sox. They spent a lot of money making it extremely realistic and are regularly updating it with new content and improvements. It has become very popular worldwide and I think something of this sort might fly. (a little play on words) :(
Great point, My friend races DP(Daytona Prototype) and most if not all the race drivers uses Iracing, formula 1 drivers have also used sims when there in re hab
BS eh? That's mature. Shame%20On%20You.gifWhy would Microsoft change the habits of a lifetime? You're living in dreamland if you think the above will happen. It won't. Add me to your lunch list. :(
Not that you would read this book, but bill gates book "speed of thought" talks about this as well as many corporation, if you business model doesn't change and remain the same you're going backwards. going backward= out of business. Changing habits is a way off life..its called meeting the demand of the consumer..Google kinda getting this whole thing locked up.

I have just spent days retro fitting my cockpit with gauges that were not on the original panel. It cost nothing except my time. I WILL NOT pay a subscription for any flight simulator. It is nothinbg but a ploy to make someone else richer than he already is!! Taking my money for the benefit of someone elses idea of how I should run my sim. I'm sorry I want to run my sim the way I want to. I choose when to pay for something or not. And, not have someone else choose for me how much I have to pay just to run the sim the way they want not the way I want.vololiberista

LOL..let be honest before you swallow your words. If There is (big on the "if) a subscription based FSX that:Has realistic scenery(ORBX)realistic weather(REX)ATC , generated from either artificial or from a player(which would be another part of this game)airports and airport trafficweathercloudsaircraft updatedDynamic and animated objectsHigh resolution day- and night texturesPhotorealistic textures on buildings, vehicles, etc.Docking systemsTaxiways, apron with realistic rendered texturesHundreds of taxiway- and runway signs according to original plans.you gonna sit here and stick to your principal and refuse to pay , just on that. Let me explain something if MS can pull this off there will be ton of videos on youtube and once you see that, you be giving up that card or paypal account. And as far as where the money goes, get over that. I could care less where the money goes as long as I have a great product. I bet when you go to that nice restaurant , by that beer or wine, you don't ask that question. Enjoy you life, some people aren't as fortunate to have a hobby like ours. And as far as it being arcade, MS is not that stupid, they will bring in new blood and retain their client base. Now lets go FLYING

Very nicely put. It seems there are too many people around here wanting to dictate how one should enjoy the sim. What is it with some people and their disdain for the freedom of individual choice? Groupthink is so... 1984.

The market will "dictate" how you enjoy your sim, because the market will provide only the software that is profitable and successful. So unless you want FSX to be the last word in flight simming (God save us all), you'd better hope companies find ways to make it work. And if subscription based models are the way forward, then sign me up. You'll be there too, sure as the sun rises. People who post on avsim.com forums are not likely to let the next great thing in flight simming pass them by on some silly hangup. Someday, you'll remember this thread and think.. "geeze that gmohr guy was right, and now I owe him lunch!" :D

If Flight should be subscription-based you'll still have "freedom of individual choice". You can sigh up or not - the choice is yours!.

Nah I wouldn't do it, don't much care what others do I am at a age where I don't need or care for others opinion, live and let live is my motto :)I spend my dollars on what takes my fancy and apart from the bank nothing will get a steady cut from me.Won't worry me one iota if thing thing turns out to be a subscription based game I can walk away and have more than enough to keep me more than happy, won't look back and won't ever worry about it.
