February 22, 201115 yr You didn't tell us what motherboard is in your system. Some are much better at data transfer than others. There's a reason some cost under $100 and some are over $200.Chasing FPS can be an expensive and disappointing endeavor; what you really want is smooth image display regardless of the FPS. I'm running a GTS 250 very successfully. Sometimes FPS drops as low a 10 in a dense scenery area but it seldom jerks or stutters. If you really want help go to www.fs-gs.com. It's the best money a FSX pilot can spend and you won't be spending money on hardware in a search for higher FPS. You can fly instead of spending your time tweaking. You may not want to do this but at least take a look. AMD 3800X, Gigabyte Radeon 5700XT, AS Rock X570 Phantom Gaming 4, 32mb 3600 ram
February 22, 201115 yr Author Hey guys, thanks for all the replies , i am going to try out all the advice you guys gave! :DBtw, i was using fsx configurator, and could anyone tell me where i have to place the new optimized fsx.cfg file? Thanks alot for all the help again :Dso is my GTS 250 holding me back, or is it really worth to invest in a better card? February 22, 201115 yr The fsx.cfg it located at C:\Users\your name?\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSXKeep a copy of the old, simply rename to fsxold.cfg or something, and keep it in the original folder for easy reactivation if needed.Bjorn "I´ll rather be down here wishing I was up there than be up there wishing I was down here"
February 22, 201115 yr Honestly the card isn't giving you that low of frame rates. Even with my computer (see signature) if i turn everyhting up all the way i will get a slide show. They key is knowing what your computer and video card can handle. what are the settings that you are using??? First thing to make sure of since your card is older is to turn boom off and put water on low 2x. Road traffic and boat traffic can be a killer, i have both mine at 20. Its all about experimenting with the sliders to reach that balance between frame rates and visual quality. Nick Running
February 22, 201115 yr The numbers you are describing has nothing to do with the lack of tweaking or too weak hardware. You wouldn't reach that low numbers. Instead it indicates some kind of issue in the configuration of your hardware. I'm guessing a bad driver or possibly a bad driver combination. I would get the latest drivers for all of my hardware as the first step in trying to figure out this problem

I was thinking of formatting my HDD and do a brand new install of windows to see if it works.thanksThe fsx.cfg it located at C:\Users\your name?\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSXKeep a copy of the old, simply rename to fsxold.cfg or something, and keep it in the original folder for easy reactivation if needed.BjornDear Crewecut,There doesnt seem to be a file called fsx.cfg in the folder path you mentioned. To be honest I couldnt even find the APP Data file (is it hidden?)Thanks for the help, btw do you think installing FSX on a separate HDD helps? February 23, 201115 yr Hey guys, btw, is there anyway to know whether FSX is using all 4 cores on my CPU? If not, is there anyway to activate this?Have you installed ServicePack 1 & 2, or Acceleration? If yes:FSX will use all cores automatically. Most of the load will be on one core with the other coresused for texture loading as required. Search for "Affinitymask" in the forums for a detailed explanation.Use the Windows Task Manager / Performance for a visual representation. Bert

February 23, 201115 yr Hey Bert, yeah i installed all service packs., btw, affinity mask is sumthing to do with the fsx.cfg file right?Yes, you can assign individual cores - but that is a fine tuning issue. Would not solve your low fps situation, so best leave alone for now. Bert
February 24, 201115 yr Author Hey guys, ok so I ve decided to upgrade my VGA card. I am thinking of a GTS 450 or a GTX 460.Which one do you think will give me better performance for FSX and for other games overall? I am thinking of a GTS 450 or a GTX 460.Which one do you think will give me better performance for FSX and for other games overall?A GTX 460 is way better but it will NOT cure your extremely low fps!!!! With your present system FSX should run much better without any tweaks at all. I'd continue troubleshooting first.Have you checked what's your fps with all sliders to the left?
February 25, 201115 yr Exactly, even with my old 8800GTS and an E6860 I got at the same settings between 300-400fps. With everything maxed out I could easily get down to single digit fpsMaybe in Antarctica with zero scenery or settings....I'd like to see how you get 300-400 fps.Let's face it... the game has been out for 4.5 years and people with the latest and greatest hardware still can't run it flat out.
