WOAI was good while it lasted...

Featured Replies

Even though the party is not quite over with WOAI there have been no real additions made to it's library in some time. This is especially painful for some of us seeing Northwest/Delta, United/Continental, and now Southwest/Airtran are realities (with 737-800s on the way for Southwest). The dust has shaken out of Northwest/Delta meaning all planes are painted with the new scheme and routes merged. The easiest way to reflect this in FS9 in past years was a wonderful easy to use add-on called WOAI. The updates for this utility was almost daily. Now development seems all but dead and it couldn't have come at a worst time with all the real world changes happening with the major airlines. For a freeware utility WOAI was one of the best to come down the pipe in years. It worked not only with FS9 but FSX as well (and I'm sure Flight when it's released). This was truly one of those great utilities that was accessable to everyone no matter what their skill level with adding AI. PAI and Alph India don't come close in ease of use although their models were used in many of the WOAI add-ins. I hope we see a resurgence in the development of WOAI add-ons for traffic. It was one of those great ideas that came along like some of the other gems we have at our disposal. It advance our hobby and kept up with the ever changing times. Adding airlines or taking them out of FS was a snap. Some may disagree but I for one loved the utility. Like FSUIPC I put WOAI right up there with the 'must have' utilities one needs in his/her FS arsenal because it cuts many steps down to one or two clicks and it's robust (that's innovation). 'Was good while it lasted' should not be used in the context of WOAI but sadly it is today, maybe that will change in the not so distant future.

Yeah, It seems that they´ve stopped developing new packages. But they´re not completely dead, they´ve updated some old packages yesterday or the day before so they aren´t completely gone. But their actuality is lacking I´m waiting for over one year for a new "Air Berlin" package. The latest one is from winter 2007 and we´re now having winter/spring 2011. Since 2007 a lot has changed but it isn´t reflected till now in FS. That´s sad. Why are they developing packages for some egyptian airlines which have been established in 2010 and do not updates to the major american and european carriers?

Best regards, Steffen

All,Tom G and the team have stated that things are NOT dead at WOAI. Sometimes RW stuff happens and the time is not there to work on FS stuff. Also, the data has to be freely available before they can do anything with new airlines or even update older packages. If you have the time, knowledge, and data, I am sure they would be more than happy to let you join their team, instead of complaining about things. Be part of the solution!

I hate it when constructive comments are made others come in and cast them aside as complaining. :( I agree with the premise more people should develop these packages which is the life blood of any utility's survival. Just the same no one is doing this in mass scale and I don't have the time these days but would love to in the near future (because theirs a serious need). Think of the wonderful idea a civilian simulator was and how much bigger it became after third party developers expand on it. The same goes with WOAI. Just like FSUIPC (another example) was a conduit that add-ons used to work properly in FS, WOAI is deserving of that same type of standard bearer for easily adding third party AI. Nothing out there beats it in the 'Ease of Use' department. What's cool is it works side by side with other traffic options like 'GA Traffic' and Flight1's 'Ultimate Traffic' (for example). We just need people (not only me) latching onto it. PAI and Alpha India aren't cutting it alone. The premise of my post above was basically meant in so many words, 'As many of us that can let's learn how to develop for WOAI' so more people than just the creators can develop for it. From there we'd have the variety of options coming daily like other aspects in our community (freeware paints, models, etc). It's such an easy tool to use there's benefits both on the front and back end for simmers. :(

I used to solely count on WOAI for my commercial airline AI (I did add other AI stuff on my own but not airlines). But since they almost stopped making packages (0 releases in February) I started adding my own airline packages.

Seems like there's plenty of AIG stuff in the library. Air Berlin summer 2010, United 2010 repaints, etc. scott s..

I download and install all their packages. By using their models, I upgrade newer flightplans downloaded at avsim. Sometimes I have to manually and some of the aircrafts to fit the new flightplans, sometimes don't.It takes me quite lot of times to upgrade newer flightplans, but that is the best solution I can think of,rather than waiting for them.

Applause.gif I hear what you guys are saying! if you do like i do ie download the latest flight plans as they arrive 2011 from where ever, you add new aircraft as they appear on the site it takes time but appears to be the only way to keep up to date files. Big%20Grin.gif

I know that real world things are more important then FS. If I could I would make my own packages but I think it´s too comlpicated for me. So I have to wait till someone makes the packages for me.

For something that's free and super easy to install, I have no complaints about WOAI. I'm actually still using Northwest and the old United packages (before the Continental merge) because I like their liveries and they remind me of my traveling days when I was younger.

I still have those packages installed also. But I have them installed because I think the new United and Delta would be confussing to install manually. Large airlines and airlines with lots of special liveries I will still use WOAI cause I think it will be less confussing to install.

I completely agree! I would argue that not only is it free but it is also one of the best AI packages (freeware or payware) available. At the end of the day what most of us want is to see our airports and airfields not appearing totally deserted and populated with sircraft that look reasonably realistic - WOAI provides this and can always be used with other AI if one wishes. Also, almost by definition, most AI flight plans (be they either freeware or payware) are going to be somewhat out of date by the time they are produced, but how many of us actually check whether the correct AI airline is arriving/departing from a particular airport at the correct time? Not many of us I think! So the bottom line from me - A BIG THANK YOU TO WOAI for producing one of the best freeware addons available for FS9!Bill

Yeah, and don´t forget FSX. They´re working in FSX as well.

Best regards, Steffen

With a Delta/Northwest kind of merge the planes would have to be painted in Delta's livery (A320's and A330's for example) and use the NW parking codes in Flight Simulator. Think of all the places NW flew in the world and imagine trying to replace every airports code to accommodated the merge. Many of NW's original routes in the real world use the same equipment with new paint anyway. The same 744 flies to Tokyo from KMSP with new paint. In FS again all that needs to be changed is the paint, keep the same parking codes and update the call sign to 'Delta' instead of 'Northwest' so you hear the right call sign in FS. There are some wild cards with some route changes like the 767 that flies out of KMSP to Paris. Continental/United will be much the same way where all the aircraft get a livery change but use the CO parking codes with updated ATC call signs for 'United'. 'Flight' will have all the worlds airports updated by default but for us FS9 simmers these merges can be a pain without a utility like WOAI...

I understand that, but I would be more confussed with the liveries. Like are there still planes flying with the old United grey livery? Or the newer white/blue livery? Is there planes still flying in Northwest colors?
