Is Airsimmer a320 worth it?

Over control is a common issue on the real thing for new pilots on the A3xx. The most important thing to remember is you are commanding a roll rate with the sidestick not a bank angle. Once you get the hang of it and stop fighting the FBW you will find it handfly's perfectly. Here's some general info regarding sidestick control, scroll down to 'Landing the A320' on the first link. Also you can google A320 FCOM http://a320typeratin...lyanairbus.htmlhttp://www.askcaptai...thumb-wins.htmlIf you are still having problems let me know over on the support forum.Regards
Thanks Flex. I bought me a new joystick(the old one was ten years old anyway) which stays centered without force feedback and it is much better now.

I have done 2 1/2 flights(CTD) in the Airsimmer and here is what I think about it.Pros:1. Great VC and Exterior. The best VC I have seen in FS9 as good as the Airbus X.2. Good FBW. I am no expert in the real Airbus but from what I have seen in documentaries and read in forums it is seemed the Airsimmer does it really well.3. Great Sounds. Especially the cockpit sounds.4. The Tablet PC is great to add liveries and take off calculations.Cons:1. CTDs. I had one on my third flight only. Many other users complain about them. In the forum, they say that it happens if you click the DIR button or change the destination. But I didn't click any buttons when it happened. The flight was from LHR to VIE and after spending 45 minutes prepping the flight and the engines wouldn't start normally(I finally used CTRL+E to start them), I got the CTD 200 nm from VIE angry.gif.2. Not all FMC pages are accessible. You can't import flight plans from FS, FSNAV nor FSBuild. Nor you can save them. So, you have to enter every single way points manually, and it would take you like 20 minutes prep a basic FMC. Also, you cannot know what is your OPT Altitude, you have to calculate it.3. Time Acceleration. In my first flight, I dared and used 16x and the plane went into spirals. I went back to 1x and recovered from the spiral, but the auto-throttle got stuck on Alfa Floor. I turned it off and I was flying a safe speed but still it wouldn't return to CLB thrust and had to exit the FS. So, the next flight I tried 8x, while it didn't go out of control, the pitch started going up and down. 4x is the maximum I could use and still I had to return to 1x every once in while to stabilize the pitch and roll. All of the complex planes I have flown in FS(PMDG, Wilco, Level-d, Maddog, PSS and iFly) allow at least 8x. I can't fly without, I know some here prefer not to use it but I do.I am sure if I had spent more time flying it I would have found more pros and cons . I could have tolerated the quirks with time acceleration and the incomplete FMC, but CTDs is a dead end for me. I think it has been out for two years now, so most the cons should have been fixed by now and I don't think it will be fixed in the future. My experience was on a CFM variant and I heard that it was the more stable one. So, I am going to ask for a refund. On the plus side, I bought a new joystick. And it turned out that the wilco(aside from the high climb and decent rate in managed mode) flies really well in terms of FBW with my new joystick, so I am back to wilco. We have a saying in my country, "It is better to stay with the crazy one than getting a much crazier one".Bob and Rafal, I appreciate your help and thank you, but it is not for me.smile.gif

A fair post I think. Two years and still CTDing. So not for me. However, lets hope that what looks like a product with fantastic potential will one day be finished. I'll be first in the queue to buy then.Rafal and Rob, pse keep me informed. I really want this aircraft. Thanks.

Over 10 years here and AVSIM is still my favourite FS site :-)

Hi, nam1394As I am one of the people responsible for the fact you bought this addon and now looks like you are not happy about it, I feel a bit silly. :blush:So, let me briefly try to comment on a few remarks of yours. I won't go too much into details as Rob would probably prefer seeing those in the AirSimmer support forum.

I have done 2 1/2 flights(CTD) in the Airsimmer and here is what I think about it
Don't misunderstand me, but I think two flights is way too little to pass a final judgement on a complex addon. My last half a year was a great iFly adventure. But my beginnings with this addon were not optimistic at all. I had constant problems with not being able to activate AP or some of its elements disconnecting in flight.A lot of frustration, forum writing and tweaking. I finally got it working. Was it worth? You bet! I would recommend the iFly 737NG to everybody. For me the best MFS addon aircraft ever!I also remember my frustrations with PMDG boeings, 737NG which had problems initially and 744 which was giving me OOMs frequently, spoiling all the fun (I almost threw my monitor out of the window after getting an OOM on approach after a 14 hour flight). But after getting all things sorted (and it took me much much more than just two flights) I became a happy captain.
CTDs. I had one on my third flight only
I had one too. But I was trying something that is known to give OOMs to some and sometimes (DIR TO exactly). There is a way around it in the AS technical forum. No other OOMs for me and I know AirSimmer pilots with tens (or more) flights without a single one. So please don't be a too strict and to quick judge here.Personally I happened to have some CTD's with most aircraft I used.
the engines wouldn't start normally (I finally used CTRL+E to start them)
I have never heard of this problem and can assure you something went wrong on your side. I guess we could deduce what it was if you like.I guess such bug is not known in the AirSimmer pilots' environment (at least not that I am aware of).
Not all FMC pages are accessible
Yes, but remember it is called BASIC and that is why it is so. And it is sold as such, no dark secrets about that. But there are no missing element of this simulation (in MCDU or anywhere else) to stop someone like me from using it in the most proper and professional (I modestly hope) way.It is rather not a light product as such, I don't use ones like these and I think I am aware of what I am buying in terms of addon airliners.
You can't import flight plans from FS, FSNAV nor FSBuild. Nor you can save them. So, you have to enter every single way points manually, and it would take you like 20 minutes
True, nobody is happy about the lack of the import/save option. One of the things I would like to see changed in future. BUT: you DON'T have to enter every waypoint! Just type the route using airways. It takes some seconds, not twenty minutes. Here's an example of my yesterday's flight from Vienna to Frankfurt: LUGIM UL174 LNZ T161 PSA. And that's all! As it is in RW. After all this (fortunately in this case) is a short/medium haul plane. On a margin: I enjoy typing in the FMC/MCDU (such a deviation, lol).
I tried 8x, while it didn't go out of control, the pitch started going up and down. 4x is the maximum I could use
Well, I cannot advise much on that, maybe Rob can. But I never ever use time compression and as far as I know, correct me if I'm wrong, no developers are eager to support issues coming from using it.
I don't think it will be fixed in the future (...) So, I am going to ask for a refund
All I can say is: wait a bit! You have 30 days anyway and give this Airbus a chance. After a week I can tell you this is an outstanding simulation, in some aspects way ahead of anything else I tried. As for the bugs, some are there. But again: absolutely no stopovers for me, my flights are delightful (each next is much better with the growing Airbus knowledge on my side - I am reading and studying a lot in the meantime). This bird, as I mentioned at least twice in other posts, requires thorough configuration of your controllers as well as some learning (try this for a starter: http://www.smartcock...ne/airbus/A320/ ) to fly an Airbus (it is NOT Boeing, you should never forget about it).
I am back to wilco
Respect to anyone and anything. Just let me say after having flown Wilco buses (both vol.1 and 2) for a long time (I also used to be a PSS user long time ago!) and trying AirSimmer now, all I can think of is: never ever! :wink:I am not defending this product for any concrete reason. I do not work for AirSimmer (I probably wouldn't like for the obvious reasons) nor do I do a support for them (I'm glad Rob does now).I am just an airbus-hungry simmer who gave the product a second chance and the more I get to know it, the more I love it.Thanks to Rob (FLEX1978) this product is still being worked on. Both Basic and Advanced. And there are patches on the horizon. Of course I am aware our trust in the AirSimmer team has been badly hurt.Anyway, thank you Rob, you are doing a great job for the FS9 Airbus lovers! :Applause:nam1394, whatever your decision is, I wish you all the best! :smile:Best regards,Rafal

Rafal, I still haven't applied for a refund. Honestly, deep down, I wanted you or Bob to make me reconsider. I really like it.As for the time compression, I understand that you fly different from myself and as I posted I could have tolerated it. And it is true that other developers don't support time compression, but I never had any issues with the mentioned planes. As for the way points entry, I don't know how to enter via using airways only without entering way points. Besides, my FSnav created plan had much more points than yours even after deleting some of them.As for the dreaded CTD, my point is that it happened just after two flights only and I didn't touch the FMC just before the CTD. I did click DIR TO way earlier after the plane ran off course, because of a shallow turn. I have never had CTDs because of Add on planes, except for the PMDG's TCAS.dll and the fix was reinstall the module. I had because CTDs because of terrain and ATC and I had fixes for all of them by checking the faulting modules. But this one had no faulting module. The iFly was released only in Oct last year(I think) and since I think May or even April it has been great. Also, the PMDG, didn't take long before it was perfect. But this one has been out since 2009! I am an Airbus lover as yourself. Heck my first experience in flight simulation was the Amiga A320 simulator(most of you don't know it because it was released in 92). It is true it was tough for me look at the Wilco's VC after experiencing this piece of art of a VC, but it is like driving a beautiful car that drives horribly versus another which a much less beautiful but drives great. I would have used a better metaphor, but fearing there are minors in the forums, so I will stick with this one. Big%20Grin.gif

I thought I'd give it an other go. I created a flight with default planner and when I entered via airways, the first airway's waypoints matched my flight plan but the second one had different way points. Does the FMC reads FS9 default airways or it has its updated ones that don't match FS9's?

It uses it's own data base and can be updated. And as I said 100 times the CTD issue is what holds me back from saying good things about this bird. I can accept the shallow turns, the nuances and so on. But I refuse to invest an hour or so to a flight and have it CTD on me when I can fly another bird (PMDG/LVD/PSS) and not have this issue.

Make sure you read the tutorial flight which explains how to properly insert an MCDU flightplan using airways. It works for me every time.

Like Al said, you can update AirSimmer's AIRAC buying credits from Navigraph: http://www.navigraph...www/fmsdata.aspYou can also update (most) FS9 default navaids every month for free here: http://hsors.pagespe...r/navaids2.htmlThe mismatches can indeed be the result of trying to use old flightplans based on outdated navigation data.

Al, I see your point and you are undoubtedly right in your right to feel so (wow, what a philosophy came out of my sentence!).But please believe me, I have no CTD's (except for the one I provoked somehow) and there are many AirSimmers having none too. I am not saying this aircraft is CTD-free but we cannot fairly say using it equals to having them, right? :(
Heck my first experience in flight simulation was the Amiga A320 simulator(most of you don't know it because it was released in 92).
I know it, I had it too :-)

Hey Rafal this is in no way trying to provoke an argument with you but I got to say it. :( With the PMDG/LVD/PSS or what have you I can provoke all I want and I have yet to have it CTD on me!An airplane is like a woman, if she is unstable she is of no use to anyone! :( No offence to any unstable women out there!

Al Stiff

A stable woman? Al, I need to go to Canada for sure! He%20He.gif

Rafal, they are very rare here too!

Al Stiff

Just a thought...If you havent already gone for the refund I would run this aircraft into the ground over the next 2 weeks. Go beserk, try every permutation you can think of and push this aircraft to the limit. I had a CTD about 3 days ago. Just after taxi clearance the flight went south. That brings me to about 4 CTDs this year flying the A320. I'm almost embarressed to tell you how many flights I have completed successfully with the A320 this year thus far (for fear of seeming not to have any life at all!), but those 4 CTDs are a tiny, infintesimally tiny fraction of my total flights.Personally, I can live with that ratio, but another man's wine etc.You are right though, this crazy, but beautiful bird (just to continue the unfortunate feminine analogy) should have been fully fit to fly a long time ago. Hopefully with Flex involved we can finally see the dream come to fruition.Cheers

I keep seeing this - how exactly is Mr Prest helping to drive this project? Don't get me wrong, as vocal as I've been about Airsimmer's practices, I've always acknowledged the tremendous potential of the product(s). It's great that someone 'new' is involved, I'm just curious how specifically Mr Prest improves the prospects for improvement going forward?

Regards,

Mark

Mark, let Rob speak for himself and decide on how much he can and how much he wants to say.All I can tell you is since he recently took over the support at AS, their forum started being a different place. Slowly, as he's a one-man band, but consequently.Questions are finally being answered, concrete suggestions given and tweaks found and collected. Moreover he is in constant touch with the developers, passing problems to them and definitely (at least that's my feeling) accelerating the moment new patches come.Of course you cannot compare it to the wonderful F1 iFly forum we both know very well, as Rob alone took over after guys whose customer-directed approach and PR are from a different planet.Plus this product was released much more prematurely (how unfortunate - we all know) than the 737NG.But Rob is the guy and I have a lot of trust in him. I am sure I will not regret my confidence. :(
