June 29, 201114 yr Hello friends in Flight Sim,I'm wondering why all the sim developers would let the main landing gear exposed after retract? It happened with all other boeing 737 from feelthere or ifly 737NGX. And now the great PMDG is doing the same thing to the soon to be released 737NGX. When I look @ its belly. I can clearly see the main landing gear exposes. I mean it would take off the realism out of flying the bird knowing the real boeing 737 has the main lang gear cover after retracted. Why?
June 29, 201114 yr That is how the 737 is designed. It would not be good for realism if there are gear doors on the model. Kenny Lee"Keep climbing"
June 29, 201114 yr The Boeing 737 is the only Boeing narrowbody to feature exposed landing gear. Many aircraft do this, for simplicity and lower costs. All Boeing 737s ever made have come off the factory without gear doors. Even military variants have doorless main gear. The Boeing 707, 727 and 757 (the other Boeing deisgned narrowbodies) have gear doors, as they are bigger aircraft. Inactive
June 29, 201114 yr Author Ok! Thank you. I thought they had the landing door done to the plane after...But they (Boeing) decided to stay with that design. Once again, thank you to all.:Peace:Please Admns: Please delete my stupid question. Thank you!
June 29, 201114 yr The picture that Lukas posted was from a Classic, so here goes one from an actual 737NG (737-800):IIRC, Boeing decided to leave the 737 without a door to cover the main gears in an attempt to reduce the weight of the aircraft. Matheus Mafra
June 29, 201114 yr Wonder why Boeing would not fully enclose the main gear when retracted? Wouldn't it be LESS aerodynamic, given that wind would travel into and around the inside of the main gear well? Matthew Bellette
June 30, 201114 yr Commercial Member SPACE. There is no room for all the stuff that would be required to put doors on the gear bays. It also makes the bays smaller as they just need to fit the shape of the wheels and that's it.ATR do the same thing, as do Falcon IIRC on some of their exec jets.Best regards,Robin.
June 30, 201114 yr Commercial Member Wonder why Boeing would not fully enclose the main gear when retracted? Wouldn't it be LESS aerodynamic, given that wind would travel into and around the inside of the main gear well? It's probably nowhere near as big an aerodynamic penalty as you're thinking, it's not like the wheels stick out or anything. It makes the whole system far less complex to maintain too - no gear doors, hydraulics for opening and closing them etc. Ryan MaziarzFor fastest support, please submit a ticket at http://support.precisionmanuals.com
June 30, 201114 yr Yeah, I can see how it simplifies the main gear systems. I suppose they weighed up the pro's and con's of weight (of hydraulics for doors, etc) and aerodynamics and came to the conclusion that on this aircraft the benefits of fully-enclosed main gear has minimal positive impact on performance compared to the open-wheel system they use to this day and that any drag, etc would also be minimal in its effect on aircraft performance/handling. June 30, 201114 yr LOL, it does. Remember that in "The Simpsons" when Homer looks at a map and finds Uruguay and pronounces it as "U R Gay" with his usual laugh? http://youtu.be/ibQZLHo7JAQ Matthew Bellette
