Just a few thoughts from a old Flight Sim Fan....

Why not? They released "light" version of A320 first. Suppose this plane was quickly found on torrents and Airsimmer was deprived of incomes to develop A320 advanced version. Then they said "Goodbye" to flight-simming business....

Nice to see off of the AirSimmer Forum and here with me! :D

There is valid point here! If even a per mille of 1.5 billion Chinese bought MS Flight then entire US flight-sim market would become meaningless! Chinese - save flight-sims genre!

Piracy kills entire PC gaming except some very "specialized" genres like MMO. However that is not no-win situation. Microsoft should release MS Flight on X360 consoles and voila! No piracy, huge market... ;)
Rubbish. Piracy has very little to do with this. It's quality of the software and problems people have with legit copies. People have learned, to wait, and check what's the quality of the product, what problems they may have, etc... Most of them also know that pirated software often hides viruses too.Nobody rushes anymore - (well, apart from ######), to buy every new product that comes out - most often rushed by the need to get the investment back ASAP, which most often turns out to be a catastrophic failure. The argument that they found a copy on the torrent and closed down business, is crap, as it's the cheapest of excuses these days. Poor management and very low quality is the cause.
Not to long ago the developers ORBX was thinking of quitting and closing shop because their scenery was on the torrent sites within 24 hours of them releasing.their scenery Add-ons.....
And what, did they close? poor gossip... so what? they could have reported links to site admins and they would be gone in minutes. Also did they count downloads, and how much was lost, vs how much did they sell? What was the ratio, or was it another speculation? One torrent site doesn't drive the whole world.
Microsoft realized this several years ago and put the halt to future development of FSX, but people like Robert and all the other developers still have a dream, and its up to us to put our money on the line to support them. So when this bird does hit the market tell, friends, family and other simmers to go out and buy this bird.
Again, **... they closed down Aces because it was going the wrong way, and they lost on sales. Aces studio were repeating the same mistakes over and over again in every iteration of the product. FSX was plain FS9 + nice shaders and 15 years of legacy that is still killing even high performance machines. Microsoft was fed up with the bad image and complains. They want to rebuild it with Flight - by doing most of the coding from scratch. Read real statistics and some very good mathematical explanations to the real loss of business. Piracy is only poor excuse to bad quality, lack of support and ridiculously high prices. In my opinion, good product is worth high price, as in case of NGX, but majority of add-ons for FSX are not worth the penny, even those from major players on the sim market. They keep rushing, and focusing on wrong areas, and support is bad to almost non-existant. E.g. Wilco doesn't support 64-bits, Aerosoft doesn't care beyond sale point, Captain Sim will spam you with issues on your side, never theirs, Carenado only does good visuals, doesn't care about the rest much, etc...

Earlier I read a topic on this forum about how many copies the NGX will sale? what a great question! - but better yet.... the question we need to ask "What are we doing to grow the hobby so developers like PMDG will stay in Business?" Actually, it would be great to see a 1000 copies sell the first day,I am new to the PMDG forum but not to the world of computer generated flight, I have had a copy of FS on my computer since the 80's. If anyone remembers when FS95,FS98, FS2004 came out their was alot more interest in the US market. Microsoft was advertizing heavy on Print ads and TV, Microsoft had booths at all major air shows in the late 90's and early 2000's...Wow, I remember being at the Reno Air races and Microsoft had over 25 computers setup to promote FSX in 2005, however, I am sure you all know that interest has fallen in the US for Flight Simming... I am sorry to say that economic times have caught up with the flight sim community, I am sure this is why PMDG will release this bird for under $100. I would like everyone to remember that all of us have a responsibility to make sure this plane does not hit the torrents, I know that many of you are saying but I can't afford to buy!...BUT THE TRUTH IS ...Piracy has killed this hobby, I am sure all of us that are above 45 years old can remember the developers names of those who have left this wonderful hobby because of this. Think about it PMDG is the only developer still pushing to create top notch aircraft, the LevelD developers have not created another plane in years and Airsimmer has run into problems and didn't get off the ground...(Oh yes... I known a few Captain Sim Products as well) Not to long ago the developers ORBX was thinking of quitting and closing shop because their scenery was on the torrent sites within 24 hours of them releasing.their scenery Add-ons..... Microsoft realized this several years ago and put the halt to future development of FSX, but people like Robert and all the other developers still have a dream, and its up to us to put our money on the line to support them. So when this bird does hit the market tell, friends, family and other simmers to go out and buy this bird. If this plane is a success, it will only encourage such developers to stay in this business, and provide top quality products. I know for a fact that there are people at Microsoft that are watching to see if this release will generate sales and interest for the hobby in the US. We all have alot at stake, remember we flight simmers are the force that keep developers in the business. Microsoft will release Flight in due time...But for now all we have is each other and developers like PMDG, so my point of all this GROW THE BUSINESS or Hobby, everyone take the time and get another person involved take the time and show them the love that we all have for this hobby. This hobby has not seen an opportunity like this in a long time, lets don't waste it...Just my thoughts.... John NelsonRetired UPS Operations Manager.Montana
Just to clarify, FSX hasd television commercials as well, since I only watch Discovery and History Channel I saw it aired many times. Also, I have no doubt in my mind that the NGX will sell over 1000 copies in the first 24 hours. When you have a good reputation the FS addon business is quite lucrative, I'm sure.

As of this writing no-one has yet managed to pirate the AS320.

The argument that they found a copy on the torrent and closed down business, is crap, as it's the cheapest of excuses these days. Poor management and very low quality is the cause.
+1 Just look at the RIAA, MPAA etc.. - they all cite piracy as the reason for lost revenues, yet they are all totally against any form of electronic distribution of products and ignore that the products sold in shops are over-priced. Their failure to keep up with trends is a problem of their own making, but to say that piracy killed the music/movie business is utter baloney. If the content is worth buying, people will buy it. Pirated copies are non-sales to start with IMHO. If they couldn't pirate it, they wouldn't buy it in the first place. Stolen cars are a good analogy - a car theif steals a BMW 5 series - chances are he would never be able to afford to buy one in the first place, hence the theft. Do you ever hear of a car manufacturer going after a car thief for loss of revenue and blaming them for lost sales? What is the difference between that and music/movies? Best regards,Robin.

Well, some interesting replies, for my first post on the PMDG forum. I will agree that over the past 25 years, there have been shady developers and several publishing companies that claim their flight sim add-ons were the best in class, and when users like me and you bought their products and realized different, we felt angry and ripped off. The fact that the tone of some replies proves my point, FS user community has long accepted the fact that piracy is ok, I get that. I think some of replies missed my main point. FS community has not seen a developer to release a Aircraft like the NGX, I am sure PMDG knows that the Mainstream FS user will be critical of this release and the FS simmer demands a functional aircraft that simulates like the real thing, I want this too. However, I also realize that this FS simulation is just that...a simulation, the fact the PMDG strives to get it right is amazing. But what I don't understand, is why individuals still defend the piracy issue, I guess, I am getting old and still value what it means to live with a high set of standards, I agree those developers including Microsoft have sometimes dropped the ball, Mircosoft is paying the price just look at its stock...the rest is history...... I guess I am disappointed that people didn't get my point, this hobby will continue to fade away as long as we the user don't stand together and grow the hobby, and share the interest and love of aviation. I think these forums are great but they don't pay the developers bills. So I say again, open your wallets and support your developers. Whatever happens in other parts of the world I can't control but I can help those around me and hopefully share a wonderful hobby. I will admit, if we had 80 million FS users, one may over look the piracy issue but in our case we don't, and young and upcoming developers are staying away from developing a good quality Flight Sim...Think about this, FS and x-plane are the 2 only platforms for real type simulations that developers are supporting, and FS has its old coding issues and X-plane isn't meeting demands either...This says alot about our hobby. A handful of developers are keeping FSX alive, and barely at that...... Thanks again to everyone for sharing thier thoughts. John Nelson

I think the distro system for Flight and its add-ons is going to make a difference. The latest Mac OS X version can ONLY be downloaded. I think people will assume an "always on" model as we go forward and actively such down piracy vectors in a much more rigorous and unabashed fashion. If Flight goes for a "Steam"-like download model, I plan on supporting it as fully as possible with my resources.
