August 24, 201114 yr Can anyone tell a difference in VC quality using texture max load 1024 or 4096? I've switched between 1024 and 4096 and cannot see any difference. ThanksMark Austen
August 24, 201114 yr Commercial Member You won't see a difference. If you have texture max load at 1024 and if a texture larger than 1024 does not have mipmaps then it will still appear at it's original resolution. If the texture is larger than 1024 and it has mipmaps (which none of the PMDG do) then only the 1024 mipmap texture will be used. So, the 737NG uses a number of 4096 textures, none of which have mipmaps, so they are all drawn at their full resolution of 4096 pixels regardless of what your texture max load setting is. Texture max load only has an effect on textures with mipmaps included. In case you don't know mipmaps are smaller versions of the original texture. For example, a 1024 texture with mipmaps will include 512, 256,128,64,32,16,8,4,2 sized textures as well (i think it goes as low as 2, not sure) www.antsairplanes.com
August 24, 201114 yr Author Ok, just asking the question because it was in the NGX guide to set the texture max load to 4096. ThanksMark Austen
August 24, 201114 yr Commercial Member Yes, I remember seeing that too and I wondered why they put it in. It's a well known tweak that is usually must useful for people using REX with their large 4096 textures which will have mipmaps because they are scenery objects (always good to have mipmaps on scenery objects). Generally speaking aircraft textures will not be mipmapped as that can introduce some blurriness (although there are exceptions to every rule, see below) BTW a 4096x4096 texture is 16MB in size without mipmaps and 22 MB with (just checked it). As far as I can tell none of the 737NG textures that are greater than 1024 have mipmaps. Although, there are some smaller VC textures that do, mostly the ones that are for the text in the VC (eg labels for switches etc,). But, as these are less than 1024 they aren't really affected by texture_max_load (unless you set it to something less 1024 and why would you want to do that?) www.antsairplanes.com
August 24, 201114 yr The difference you can feel is that aircraft takes-off latly on the runway. I cant see any differences in the VC. Volkan
August 24, 201114 yr Ive added mip mpas to the wing textures to get rid of the jaggies which would go no matter how much AA i added in Nvidia Inspector. Simon Roberts
August 24, 201114 yr Ive added mip mpas to the wing textures to get rid of the jaggies which would go no matter how much AA i added in Nvidia Inspector. Could you PM me with some info on precisely how you did that. I have the wing jagged lines and it drives me nuts. I have the GTX 460 and nVidia Insp.Thanks. Ray When Pigs Fly . Ray Marshall .
October 9, 201114 yr I am too interested in this. With AA and AF on, I still see some jaggies when at certain angles of my aircraft outside.I am going crazy trying to figure this out, and a google search has turned into my nightmare with 100,000 posts popping up all saying everything and nothing at the same time about this problem. My VC is rendered so beautiful, I have no complaints. The outside is a different story though. When I zoom in close, all is good.....but when I am say, 50 feet or more away, I can see some clearness, but then around the edges of the wing and the tail, I see some small jaggies.... This is prohibiting me from making nice videos and pictures, as I want to use what just the sim tools paint, as I can't afford any editing software....plus, it just kind of kills the emmerision when flying and looking around outside... Thanks...hope someone replies with what worked for them. i3-530 @3.2GHzXFX HD Radeon 57704Gigs Patriot Ram1 TB HD William Sequeira

In DXTBmp there is a box on the right side that says "Mip Maps" and inside the box there is place to check to "include when saving", just make sure that box is checked. Also, in the Simobjects NGX folders, namely the 800 folder there are some shared folders that include wing textures, so you might want to mip those as well in case the liverly you flying uses those textures as a fall back. Sean Campbell POST EDIT: The method also works basically the same for addind mip maps to scenery files that shimmer, ie some Aerosoft airports. Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator
October 9, 201114 yr Hey thanks....I will give this a try.....surely after backing everything up first. You would have a list of files off the top of you head that will need this change would you? I am kinda new to all this and wanting to learn, but really don't want to have to do a fresh install cause I screwed it up so badly.... William Sequeira
October 15, 201114 yr Hello, I have tried to get rid of jagged textures (mainly on the wings). One thing (tested) is to set in nVidia Inspetor 8xSQ and 2x Supersampling. Unfortunately, this tweak, which fix the jagged lines, lead to two minus:1. cockpit is not quite on focus, textures are a little bit blurried2. a huge impact on performance. While in 2D cockpit view my avg fps il 30, in VC and wingviews it collapse to 20 with some microstutters. For this reason I returned back to 8xS and 4x Supersampling, which is more fps friendly. Now I have just read this post. One question: adding mipmaps the the wings textures have an impact on texture quality. Could you post a comparison between a screenshot with wing having mipmaps and other one without them? Those jagged lines annoying me so much! Thanks, bye. Capt. October 16, 201114 yr For those of you seeing jagged lines on the wings, check that the setting "aircraft casts shadows on itself" is turned off in your FSX graphics options, as this is one thing that can cause jagged artifacts in the wing view. October 16, 201114 yr Yes Sir, they are turned off now. It GREATLY reduced them, but they aare still there. I have tto run tray tools on super sampling, which runs me about a 3-5 fps loss, which in some areas is less than ideal. But oh well, my fault for not having a better rig. Question, would mipmapping the wing textures make it so they would go away if i reduce it down to multi sampling in aa? William Sequeira

Those jagged lines are about the black lines painted on the wings while you referred to the shadow casted by the airplane itself (read other post here before about that effect). Capt.
