Developers: Is there hope for a jailbreak?

Featured Replies

I remember when FS98 was released many of us imported all of our addons into Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator because it had better performance and looked nicer, even though it really wasn't meant for that. Seeing as Flight is nothing more than an optimized version of FSX, even with the severe crippling of the ability to import addons into it unless it comes from Live, it is pretty depressing. That said, do any developers think it is possible to "jailbreak" Flight so we get the engine and simply import addons into it? This would be like jailbreaking an Apple or Android phone. Here's what I'm thinking.Since The entire earth is still there, Microsoft just saw fit to nuke all of the detail outside of Hawaii, the coordinate system should pretty much be the same as FSX. (I'm assuming this is true since they also removed slew so there is really no way to see it for ourselves.) I figure if we did this, we'd have the optimized engine, with current FSX addons and the world will be right again. I would assume that Microsoft would act the same way that Apple or Google does with jailbreaks and turn a blind eye since it brings in customers and therefore money in their little fat hands. That way, they can have their gaming crowd come in (XBOX fans are begging for this to be ported to XBOX) and at the same time they will gain back the dedicated flight simulation crowd. Thoughts? If this IS possible this could be the saving grace for Flight.

Not legally...It doesnt make sense either, US laws are so upside down, you can't reverse engineer or modify software but you can when it comes bundled on hardware...http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2010/07/feds-ok-iphone-jailbreaking/

I don't think M$ wouldn't do anything against it. When potential (=at least they think we are) customers buy ORBX, PMDG, A2A etc. stuff and run it in FLIGHT illegaly they think it will destroy their market place. But it won't because nobody wants the crap from the market place if he is used to buy stuff from good developers. However as we see, M$ doesn't sees that we need a platform and not a stupid content!

Flight is not backward compatible with FSX so even if it was jailbroken or hacked, good luck getting any FSX addons to run with it.

John, thanks. That was the answer I was looking for. That was the last glimmer of hope....

With a system like that, playing Microsoft Flight should be child's play!
