Weird effects after installing NVidia driver 285.62

Featured Replies

Hello all,I posted this question earlier at the Hardware/Drivers section, but didn't get any reply. Hopefully more luck at this forum. A few days ago I installed the NVidia 285.62 driver, replacing 275.33 (never installed 280.26). The installation was done via the 'express' method. Subsequently in FS9 the fps showed wild variations ('V' op to 40%), and frequently dropping to around 9, obviously causing lots of stutters. After rolling back to the old driver everything was normal again. This is very odd and since nobody as far as I know has mentioned any problems with this version, I've got the feeling that the culprit lies at my end, but I haven't a clue where. Could it have something to do with the new Inspector? I've read somewhere that the old Inspector should be deleted before installing a new one. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.Regards,René

It might be 285.62 driver. There have been problems reported on the Level-D 767 forum with some of the recent drivers. You could go back to the 275.33 one or try the new Beta one which apparently has just become available although that doesn't seem perfect either.Colin B

Don't know, but you could try to uninstall nvidia inspector and then reinstall the 285.62s, but this time use the "custom" install (if that's what it is called) that allows for a clean install. scott s..

Thanks very much for the replies and the information guys! It has become clear that driver- and/or inspector updates these days have to be handled with more care than I used to apply and should be treated with a certain degree of suspicion. For the time being, I will stick with the 275.33 driver, as it works fine for me and I don't see much added value in the new inpector, which may be more interesting for FSX users. By the way: the 275 driver was the first one with a decent, crisp font for menu's and text messages (like ATC, AES and fps info; I noticed that in the 285 driver the old 'watery' font has returned. Strange.Kind regards,René

Hi.It's undoubtedly the new driver that's at fault. I once broke an Nvidia card by updating the driver- garbled screen (though in very tasteful colours) and couldn't uninstall or roll back. I was sufficiently p****d off to sling the card through a window (it was open) and swear by all powers never to buy another Nvidia product.I'm now using another Nvidia card... so that's my afterlife stuffed. Why update the driver if the one you already have is doing a good job? The perennial hunt for fresh upgrades is just marketing-department brainwashing. As you've discovered, it's better to find a driver that works and stick to it.Regards,D

I'm using the 290.36 beta driver and it seems to be pretty stable running FS9 and FSX. Before with earlier drivers I would get intermittent freezes and stutters. So far with this version for last few weeks all been going fine.

Yea 290.36 is a big up on 275.33 - little or no stutters now in FS9 in heavy cloud and up to 40 FPS, using FS limiter set at 30 in Inspector!not tried it with FSX yet but am encouragedUsing XP SP3 on dual core though.Ray

I use the 275.33 driver with no issues.Have to agree with Dave and Tristan.I think the benefits of new drivers, where FS is concerned, is more placebo than anything else.

See this thread.....its drivers! If you are not having the problems feel lucky. A huge percentage of Nvidia users across many of their latest video cards ARE having serious issues.http://forum.avsim.net/topic/360780-geforce-drivers-and-nvidia-500-series-cards/
