extremely low gpu memory usage problem.

hey, i have been trying to figure this out for a while now. i use fsx with acceleration and rex 2.0, i havo no scenery installed.my hardware is based around a 2500k overclocked to 4.6ghz with 2 hd6950s that have unlocked shaders. the issue im having is that msi afterburner shows that fsx isnt using more than 280mb of video ram ( which i think is why my framerates are hovering in the mid 20s) sliders are maxed out except for water which is at medium.i have tweaked the fsx.cfg file to include [bUFFERPOOLS] with a poolsize=4000, affinity set to 14, 4096 resolution textures enabled. ill share any other information that's required to sort this out. decreasing resolution from 1920*1080 to 1440*900 results in no change in the frame rates. crossfire and tessellation are disabled.

I think it´s quite normal and depends more on the graphics card related settings than Scenery or anything else. I think I had a simliar number like you before I started to play around with graphics settings. After I had my FSX running as I wanted I tweaked the settings for my Graphics card to get a little bit more visual quality. Since all (or most) of that stuff is done entirely by the Graphics Card it does not affect FSX performance at all, but looks nicer to me.Now I think I have around 800MB of Video memory used and instead of the GPU running in idle all the time it´s getting quite warm. If it would not look better as with my settings before, of course I would revert to these. Less Power consumption means less heat and a greener flight :-)Here are some of the settings I changed from deafult in my NVidia Settings:- AF 16x- AA Transparency Off- Triple Buffering On- Negative LOD Bias Clamp- Texture filtering Trilinear optimizing Off- Texture filtering Quality High Quality- Texture filtering anisotropic On- Prerendered frames 1- AA Mode AA_MODE_METHOD_SUPERVCAA_64X_4v12 (I think this was the main setting which made my Graphics Card do something for her money)If you´re happy with your image quality I´d say: Be happy that your GPU gets not much work from FSX. It generates less heat and consumes less power.

Lucky you!I'd clear out the Bufferpools tweak whilst trying to solve the problem. I don't use it anymore as although it did give me higher overall FPS it generally made it less stable. Use the native resolution of your monitor (mines connected to a HDTV so 1920x1080 (1080p) is what I use.I don't think low memory usage is a direct cause for low FPS performance. Usually it's the inverse, when the memory becomes too bloated things start to slow down. If you increase your rendering settings (AA, AF etc) you will definitely chew up more memory. Also stock FSX with no add ons isn't much of a burden on todays modern systems. If you start putting add ons into the equation which introduce lots more autogen and high resolution textures you'll also increase memory usage.

Your Bufferpools setting looks wrong but I could be mistaken.

Yeah - BP is wrong. 4 k isn't worth having as a "pool" size. IF you need pools, then use Microsoft's recommended size of 8 MB (8388608) with a reject size of (initially) 128k (131072), but, as Ian suggests - with 6950's and 4.6 gig - you probably can get away with BP=0.[bufferPools]UsePools=1PoolSize=8388608RejectThreshold=131072 // 262144 // 524288

what's your anti alias setting? try set it to very high and check your gpu usage.

hey thanks for the input guys, i will try paul js tweak and get back. i just felt something was wrong since my hardware should be giving me much better performance. i figured it might have something to do with the vram usage but i was probably wrong, im a bit of a newbie and im really trying to make this sim look as good and run as smooth as some of the stuff ive seen on youtube. my anti aliasing is set at 12x with edge detect enabled. aniso filtering is at max. i probably should dial down the autogen somewhat.

I've never seen "FSX" use more than about half the video memory.
Really?! I´ve just finished an flight with the NGX from KDEN to KPDX and my card, which is an 1 GB nVidia GTX 560 used arround 600 - 700 MB during the entire flight.AA was at 8xQ and AF 2x SGSS but I´m reverting back to AA_MODE_METHOD_SUPERVCAA_64X_4v12. This setting gives me way better frame rates and the same IQ.

Best regards, Steffen
