January 10, 201214 yr Spam was the food from the skies.....As mentioned it is popular in the pacific islands and the story goes back to World War 2.When the Japanese where holding Philipines and many other islands the local populations had a lack of food. So the Americans flew missions to drop food from aircraft over the islands to help feed people. Part of the food they dropped was good old SPAM.When the US Marines arrived in the Philipines in WW2 Spam was the foremost part of the diet. So the locals got a taste of it as well.
