Trying to make the sea look more life like in the UK, is it possible?

Featured Replies

I remember using REP some years ago.I do not remember any significant change of sea coloration in and around the UK .It was much the same sort of blue/tropical variation as usual worldwide. No longer use it.AndyREX=PaywareREP=FreewareJust to avoid confusion.Have no experience with REX ,(bet the sea is still blue round the UK though)

Give REP a try you will notice a difference

I did ask earlier in this topic mondeoman, but before I install REP can I just use the water textures only? I have downloaded the file but at this moment in time I am a bit reluctant to run the programme in case it messes up all my settings with REX etc. So like REX, once it has been installed does it have a seperate check box of sorts to just have the water textures?Andy (HoratioWondersocks)- Just out of interest, what water textures do you use if you do not use REX OR REP?

HiAs a UK resident I do sympathise. Those Americans have no idea (except perhaps Alaskans), how grey and dreary the sea can be in the UK. However in Scotland and Corrnwall I have seen exquisite blues just like the Med.My solution is to use REX for FS9 (payware), which does have some nice grey rainy overcast textures. It is a bit shiny however for my taste. I use in addition, an old Flight Environment overcast texture (I think its number 17). I can't send it to you as its probably covered by a copyright, But if you could get hold of it - even buy FE, it's really worth having even if its a bit old now, as a supplemental texture.I've attached a screenie, actually from Alaska, but it should give you an idea. You load REX then replace the overcast.bmp file in scenery\world\texture with the new file.Hope it helps.Ray

Hi there MarkI use nothing for water textures ,just the default FS9 .Actually to be fair to MSoft ,there UK,Europe ,North Atlantic etc etc sea water textures may be rather unrealistic, but I have seen TV documentaries showing coral reefs ,tropics ,west indies etc were the FS9 textures really do match with reality.I suppose when a game(naughty...simulator) is to be sold ,beautiful greens blues ,look better than grubby greys ,even though that is reality in the North sea ,channel, Baltic etc.cheers Andy

Having just returned from a quick diving sorte in Dorset, I can report that you are all missing a couple of important components for realistic water in the UK. Garbage, shopping trolleys and sewage. :(

Might I suggest you search for "Water Textures" under FS9 Miscellaneous at Avsim (some) and FlightSim (31 files) ... some seem to be promising, offering darker water.

Mark22 You can use just the water feature an leave the rest unticked. Hope this answers your question.

:( HA HA! Yes you are right Tristan, there is a lot of that c**p in our seas! Well, I do have EZ Scenery so maybe I can add those in to make it even more realistic!Seriously though, many thanks for everyone who has made suggestions. I will keep tinkering around and see what works best for me. If anyone thinks of anything else then feel free to say!

Wonderful!.... B) ...!Using the FS 2004 REX water textures, (Sea/Inland water), I have the inland water; rivers, lakes, etc, set to a muddy, dark green/brown colour, which although realistic, sometimes blends into the surrounding countryside, often making them difficult to spot, so the advantage? of the blue sea colours, although unrealistic, at least make it easier to spot the sea from a distance!Do we have default; Garbage, Shopping Trolleys, and Poo objects in the FS 2004 Library?....They can be added with Abacus; "EZ-Scenery"... :( .... :( ....!Paul....FS 2004...FS Nav...and a Garbage Truck... :( ...!

Very sad Tristan.Litter and filth one of my pet hates.Lazy dirty people everywhere with no respect for the environment at all.Just to get to my local supermarket ,I often have to wade through garbage ,junk and broken glass. In Sutton where I live it sometimes seems as though there is more broken glass than tarmac.Anyways was wondering were you had gone ,hope your keeping well.cheers Andy

Thanks Guys for your responses. Andy, I am doing very well thanks, can't make a good ole cuppa without thinking of the Flight Forums ! Sorry Mark, I didn't mean to hi-jack your topic with my old 'Salt Tales'. I for one have tried and tried to replicate realistic textures and haven't come up with anything better than already has been suggested.

Here is what the OP wanted (I think) this is the wintery sea of Japan, grey, dull, uninviting with a temperature of -2C...Now that I have taken this shot, I have to restart my flight from scratch... my FS9 screen refuses to restore!!!This is a REX texture, I hope it helps.Happy landings.

The old Flight Environment Pro had a bunch of water mods - I'll see if anything looks dull and dreary...Best I can get out of FE...Regards,Scott
