How is XP 10 ?

Featured Replies

I've tried out the demo of X-Plane 10 on a 2.26 GHZ Dual Core and it runs very smooth. I would say, using my eyes (blum.gif), that it runs at around 23-25 FPS with settings appropriate for my system. XP10 is quite fun, and I believe one of the best features is the dynamic lighting.

Happy Flying,

Clem Wu

Posts in the MS Flight suggest that Flight is bad so I am thinking of going to XP 10. Have not been flying since 5-6 months and as XP10 supports linux I would go for it.Just want to know how good is XP10 and does it cover sceneries ?
Honestly, I was tremendously underwhelmed. Performance in a C172 on Alienware [email protected], 8 cores, 16GB with an ATI HD6950 was *well* below a tripped-out FSX install running PMDG NGX on a much lesser system. Clouds and atmospherics were very unsatisfying - visually and performance-wise. After a 4 hour installation, I uninstalled it after an hour. It feels very "beta" and unfinished. Maybe in a year or two. Despite the anemic scenery, I prefer X9 to 10.As a former game developer, it seems evident to me that Laminar is very capable in the aeronautical simulation space, but greatly lacking in graphics fundamentals. They really need to recruit someone who understands the rendering pipeline of modern GPU's and can author a lean graphics engine. But, give the demo a go. Your mileage may vary. I suppose much depends on your expectations going in. If you're going in looking for an FSX alternative, I think you'll be disappointed given the price point.Out of the box, I give X-Plane 10 a strong C+ (maybe a B- for effort).

1 hour of experience??? Why not leave it to someone who actually knows a bit more about it.

At this time there are performance issues with the ATI cards... They are working on it.

There are XP10 scenery videos on youtube and are mind blowing.I think FSX turned out more expensive when you take in the hardware requirements.

XPX at night is fantastic.
Can you give me links to XPX night scenery videos ?

Before you go out and buy new cards etc.., get all the required info for running XPX and then make sure that your system is compatible to running XPX properly..... in addition to a good graphics card you might consider adding [increasing ) your memory to the 8GB area..... it costs a bit more but the results are incredible..... also for those of you who are questioning the XPX demo, the demo gives a lot of feeling of what is new with XPX, but once you purchase the real package then you really see what XPX is about and it is quite a bit more than you saw in the demo...... as for the scenery aspect for XPX or any other version, you might consider joining a virtual flight sim airline that has for its qualified pilots more scenery than you can handle as well as add-on aircraft certified by its tech group.... as well being a member of a virtual airline allows you to mingle online with its members and this is another way of resolving a lot of your problems/questions..... one such virtual airline is California Air and it is X-Plane oriented.... well worth the try as they are the best and they work at keeping it the best.Wolf624

I did inquire about the GT 525M ( that's the one in the notebook which i am about to purchase) with XPX support personnel and they did tell me about the 8 gb and 525m not being strong enough that put me in a dilemma as I cannot afford to upgrade the desktop and also buy a laptop. But I am anyway going ahead with the Toshiba SL755 (i5 2430m / 4 GB / 640 GB / 15.6" / 1 Gb Nvidia ) or the Dell Inspiron 15r again the same config as the Toshiba.

Ironmaiden.....In response to your reply, my system is as follows: Mac 27IN.. processor3.1GHz Intel Core 5.. Memory 8 GB 1333MHz DDR3.. Graphics AMD Radeon HD 6970M 1024 MB.. Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 (11D50b)..... I should have mentioned this before....now my questions to you are, "are you using a Mac or PC system"?.... are you associated with any virtual airline that uses X-Plane only?... the reason for my asking is if you are not associated with an X-Plane only VA it would be wise to get together with one and that way most of your needs would be answered in a heartbeat and you would get to meet a lot of knowledgeable VA Pilots more than willing to help.... I found that not sacrificing on the quality of the graphics card is very important and the overall RAM in your system ae well.... hope that this helps you, and finally, is your system capable of handling X-Plane.... have a great day Ironmaiden.Wolf624Ironmaiden.... just read your system specs at the bottom of your reply and youappear to have a sound system.... I would think that as you are doing in concentrating on the graphics capability and overall RAM would be enough for your system upgrade.Wolf624

My current system is in my sig but I shall write it down again.Athlon X3 4454 GB DDR31 GB HD 5450 (Sapphire)160 GB FSX320 GB everything else.17" Samtron.I get decent FPS in FSX with mid-high sets 22-29). So No I am not using a Mac (too costly) , I used to fly with Falcon 4 with a fighterwing but that quite sometime back. I do have an option of upgrading the HD 5450 (in the PC) to a HD 6570 and also buy the laptop which should be in my budget but upgrading the PC to a Sandy bridge would make a much bigger hole in my pocket than already there. Currently my budget is limited. Yes I can upgrade the laptop to 8 Gb .You think I should go with the HD 6570 for the PC and also upgrade the PC RAM from 4 GB to 8 GB ?I have had ground training in flying but everything was cut short due to finance issue's so I need to stick with one sim and my target now is XPX and train myself. I am currently not thinking of joining a VA (thnx for mentioning) at least till I perfect my flying in the sim.

Ironmaiden....I am in no way telling you to upgrade your system, simply making a suggestion.... I haave gone through what you are experiencing and the above remarks that I have made reflect what I have done and fortunately has worked for me.... when I was going through the headaches and heartaches of getting X-Plane to work as it is supposed to, I had coleagues in the sim world that made all kinds of helpful suggestions and I am very thankful that they came through.... it made my final selections much easier to make.... and it was easier in the financial dpartment as well.... good luck in your selections and do hope that you will keep in touch as you go along.RegardsWolf624

I don't see any general problems with it. I use X-Plane 10 on weekends on my notebook (i5-2430/6 GB/2 GB NVidia) and it gets better and better. X-Plane 10 10.04 beta 4 was another big step in the righ6t direction. The only real issue i had: I had to configure the notebook to always use the NVidia GPU. By default it always used the GPU in the i5 which is grweat to hold the power consumption in check, but it is totally unusable with X-Plane 10. Only the RAM might be an issue. I used X-Plane for a few days with my old Core2Duo with 4 GB and I had several crashes, that I didn't have on my Desktop or the new notebook. But this was with an early 10.03 beta.

I am happy that it will work well on the notebook.
