Money goes over human life it seems.Singapore, there is a law system that is mostly like what I would want here. Though it will never happen in this country.Thankfully I can always emigrate when I have finished my education. February 17, 201214 yr A moment's thought whould have shown that it's impossible to lay down a detailed schudule to cover all eventualities:- single mum 1 download = ?- single mum 2 downloads = ?- single mum 100 downloads = ?- single mum 1000 dowloads, 10 previous convictions = ?etc etcnThat's why the legislature sets the maximum sentence and allows to courts to decide what is appropiate in all the circumstances, with an appeals procedure if necessary.So what do you mean? February 17, 201214 yr Judges in the USA are elected and if it is good for politics....they will have no problem with the Maximum.CheersThis varies by state. In Massachusetts, judges are appointed for life. IMHO, it's a terrible system. They have no responsibility to the electorate at all, so they can be as ideological as they like. This is the reason that so many places have passed minimum sentencing laws and 3-strikes-you're-out laws. Overly permissive judges had been letting dangerous guys out with minimum sentences, so legislatures that have to face the people started the get-tough laws. Now, places like California have their prisons full of low-level drug users and have no place to put more serious offenders.

The "point that you're ignoring" is that you don't know which judge/jury you'll get, and just what the record company will pursue in court.In other words, you're way too focused on the 10 year sentence thing to a point of sounding like a parrot!Tell me if you think a student being fine >$600,000 is realistic or fair.
