February 29, 201214 yr Usually I am the first to download the newest OS and usually Flight Sim has behaved well through beta versions of Vista and Windows 7. However, now that I have got my FSX at a level where I am 100% satisfied with it, I don't want to chance breaking it by installing Windows 8. So...who will be the brave one and take one for the FS community? I'm willing to send whoever tests FSX and Windows 8 a case of beer! (and not cheap beer either!) :( Edited March 1, 201214 yr by Mike T
February 29, 201214 yr Windows 8 primary design function was not as a desktop OS replacement for W7. It is for the W8 tablets that are being released later in the year. So unless you are running FSX on a tablet or touchscreen OS I am guessing W8 is actually going to be a huge step back in terms of what you are used to on the desktop. Incorrect info pointed out by Jahman below so edited out to remove any confusion...I have a touchscreen monitor on one of my rigs so I will give it a whirl but I am a Vodka drinker Mike. And not cheap Vodka :( Edited February 29, 201214 yr by psolk Have a Wonderful Day -Paul Solk
February 29, 201214 yr Windows 8 primary design function was not as a desktop OS replacement for W7You are confusing "Operating System" with "Graphical User Interface".W8 is an OS evolution from W7, therefore everyone running W7 can benefit from W8 OS improvements.Additionally, W( sports an optional new GUI called Metro. Metro was promarily designed for touch-screens, but can also be used with a mouse (of course!), and can even be disabled so W8 runs with the traditional GUI from W7.Cheers,- jahman.

I have only had visibility to the tablet or "Metro" side of things and wouldn't want that on my desktop :)Thanks for the clarification, apologies for the misinformation!!! March 1, 201214 yr Commercial Member Yeah Paul, that's not true - Win8 is definitely intended to be the successor to Win7. It borrows elements from their Windows Phone OS - the "Metro UI" for the new Start screen, which replaces the Start Menu. The desktop is pretty much just like Win7 though. I can say it is great on a pre-release tablet though, very second nature if that makes sense. They always say even the best of us can make mistakes from time to time, imagine if you aren't even the best of us like me ;) Edited March 1, 201214 yr by psolk Have a Wonderful Day -Paul Solk

March 1, 201214 yr Regarding just Windows 8, I can have BOTH W7 and W8 installed on my machine, right? I don't want to run FSX on W8 just yet, just wanted to be assured that if I install this, I'm not totally wiping out Windows 7.
March 1, 201214 yr Me too, my W7 is balanced, running great, idea of installing W8 and FSX all over again gives me nightmares. They said again that it should run faster than W7, but that is still to be proven. But, one thing I got told on the Microsoft conference - they said that you can close the Metro, or better said, open the desktop as you know it, but Metro can't be disabled. It will always open upon boot and you can't tell Windows to start on the desktop when you turn on your computer. Which kind of really annoyed me, since I really REALLY don't want to know all the information when I power up the computer.

March 1, 201214 yr Can someone explain what features that they need which Win8 offers but Win7 doesn't? (W8) should run faster than W7, but that is still to be provenGenerally newer OS include significant performance improvements in memory handling, inter-process communication, kernel, security, etc., etc. etc.For a ridiculously low price you get to buy software that MS litterally spent zillions developping. Never saw a better deal. But yes, there is no guarantee that a finicky program like FSX pushing the performance envelope might not take a hit and require a reinstall. So, in his capacity as AVSIM Hardware Forum Moderator, I nominate Word Not Allowed to show leadership and test W8 for us! :LMAO:Cheers,- jahman.
