March 20, 201214 yr Hello everybody,I am experiencing an annoying problem. When I fly VFR I usually use the Carenado Skymaster. It has a 'default' GPS built into it and until that was quite sufficient. But, since I do own a realityXP GNS530WAAS, I thought it would be a waste of money not to use it in the skymaster. (in fact I haven't used it in quite a while so it HAS BEEN a waste of money anyway sofar).I discovered that the skymaster came prepared to install the realityXP GNS so that's what I did tonight.Oh what a shame. When I switched on the GPS, after the selftest, my framerates dropped dramatically from a stable 30 to 7 or 8.'This has to be a glitch' is what I thought so I switched it of and yep, the framerate went up again to a stable 30. When I tried it again I got the same result. From a stable 30 to an unflyable 7...Now I am sure that it has something to do with my system. I cannot believe that this product is flawed in such a way that it makes the sim unflyable. And if it does, it is a well kept secret. Is there anybody who had the same problem and who has found a solution?all tips and tricks appreciated.I am running windows 7 64bit ultimate on a Intel i7 2600Kgraphics come from an evga GTX580 slightly overclockedLuc BrusselmansBelgium
March 21, 201214 yr There is no way, that the RealityXP GNS should impact your performance. As a matter of fact, it performs better than the default GPS on my system. How does the GNS530 perform in other airplanes? Bert

March 21, 201214 yr Author Hello,I just got home from the office...Well, my guess is that the installation that is provided by Carenado is Flawed.I tried yesterday late in the evening to restore the original GPS and afterwards I installed the GNSthrough the 'original' application that comes with the reality xp GNS 530.And as far as I have been able to test it, the sim has become flyable again.Saying that there is no impact on performance is a bit far fetched.Framerates still make a significant drop (from 30 to 20) but the sim remains flyable.I will check it out further but so far I am reliefed that I can use the GPS as intended.Luc BrusselmansBelgium
March 21, 201214 yr Commercial Member Just anecdotally ;) I’ve found better performance with an RXP GNS too – but that’s very hard to measure. RXP uses Garmin’s own standalone simulator and I suspect on a multi-core processor it runs on a separate thread. RXP also does not use XML script; while the default does. So in my mind it’s not too unrealistic to think it adds up to an even faster GPS. One way the gauge could run slow is using an unnecessarily high gauge resolution. Here’s what I use for reference. Another thing to look for, and it’s unlikely, is unintended duplicates in panel.cfg. [Window01]size_mm=300,355…gauge01=rxpGNS!gns530, 0,60,300,216[VCockpit02]size_mm=512,512pixel_size=512,512…gauge01=rxpGNS!gns530, 0,87,512,312 Still, PC's all seem so different - I really would not be too surprised to learn on some systems performance is reduced :)
March 21, 201214 yr Luc,You have a problem with your system setup. When you searched the forums (including RealityXP's) did you find others with the same problem? Best Regards, Vaughan Martell PP-ASEL KDTW
March 22, 201214 yr Also, make sure you disable all instances of the original GPS in the panel.cfg file!Put // in front of any line that contains the Carenado GPS gauge! Also, make sure you disable all instances of the original GPS in the panel.cfg file!Put // in front of any line that contains the Carenado GPS gauge! March 22, 201214 yr Also, as I mentioned to him on the RealityXp forum yesterday, just put it into a default MSFS aircraft (Baron e.g.) and see what happens. No tweeks, just install it and fly it in a basic setup. Best Regards, Vaughan Martell PP-ASEL KDTW
March 23, 201214 yr Author Hello everyone,It has been a bit of a hectic week at the office so I didn't have much time to foolow up on all the posts here.I did however tried to solve the problem by reading up on a few other trhreads in this forum and over at realityXP.There were some other posters who had a similar problem (I recall someone called Denver69) but thosethreads didn't lead to any usefull solution. One thing is clear. When I try to use the exe file that comes with the skymaster to install the GPS from realityXPI run into trouble. The skymaster comes prepared to take the RXP GPS, but when I install it through theincluded exe, it does only so with a massive hit it framerates (30 to 7)When I restore the original GPS, the framereates go up again to 30.I then installed the RXP GPS again but now through the normal way with the installation routine of RXP itself and thenit works ok but only AFTER a reboot. (God knows why). Before the reboot I have only about 20 frames, after the rebootthose go up again to 30.So I guess my problem is solved and when I find the time, I may try to find out what goes wrong with the installerthat comes with the Skymaster itself. Thanks for all the tips here.Luc BrusselmansBelgium
March 23, 201214 yr Hi Luc,Happy you are up and running!I would still manually remove all references to the Carenado GPS for optimal performance. Bert
March 24, 201214 yr Author Hello Bert,I never have considered manually tuning the panel.cfg.From my point of view, but who am I, Ithought that installing the gps automatically would remove or at least disable the originalinstalled gps.As you point out, that is indeed not always the case.Ok, back to the tweaking part of our hobby. It's never goning to end, is it?ThanksLuc BrusselmansBelgium
March 24, 201214 yr Hi Luc,I always install RXP gauges manually, so for me this is just routine housekeeping...BTW, how do you get the GNS installed in the panel, just using the RXP config app???That would only add a popup window... Bert
March 24, 201214 yr That is truly puzzling problem but I don't think you should be seeing a drop in performance regardless of the method of install for the RXP gauge. I have a similar system, I7 2600K @ 4.9 Ghz. I have the Skymaster and have used the Carenado installer for the RXP530gns. I did a very quick FPS check when installing the RXP guage, but saw no appreciable change after install. At a big airport like KSEA I get about 30 FPS on the runway, and as I get airborne and away from Seattle, my frames go to about 40-60 FPS and that is over ORBX scenery.I could only speculate that perhaps you have a config problem or maybe a driver issue. March 25, 201214 yr BTW, how do you get the GNS installed in the panel, just using the RXP config app???Bert beat me to it. Without the installer, there's no (practical) way to add it to the panel so you're popup only. What I do these days, having learned my lessons slowly through several Carenado/RXP installations, and after help from folks like Bert, is to use the Carenado installer to get the gauge in the panel, but copy in one of a couple of standard rxpgns.ini files to define functionality. Basically one for planes that have both the 430 and 530 and separate ones for just 430 or just 530. This allows the installer to do the panel work, and me to define how the gauges will work. I'll then go back through panel.cfg to do be sure all references to the old gauges are commented out as has been suggested. It's takes more work to describe the process than it does to actually do it. It's pretty straightforward.Sure it'd be great if things "just worked", and in my experience they mostly do. But a bit more care tends to keep the gremlins fully at bay, as each Carenado RXP installer seems to do things just slightly differently.Using this approach, I have no performance issues with the 530 in the Skymaster on my now-aging i7 920-based system. None.Hope this helps,Scott
