Predictable Stutter.....

Man you guys are AWESOME. I half expected this thread to get buried because it involved the mention of ever present stutters. I should have known better. If there is one thing I can count on, it is people lending a hand in this forum.

I am about to head home from work and try out a few recommendations from this thread. If it gets solved, I will post my exact settings to the "T." Thanks again...I swear...the only app I own that behaves like this...and my system (one would think) drastically goes above almost anything that can be thrown its way......such is life with FSX.

Danon -

The very best I could do was to lock my frames to 30 (in game) and set locked at 30 with the external fps limiter too.... I know seems bassackwards but it works...

Isn't that like bunjie jumping with a second cord attatched to the ground?

That's why it's weird... but I've found it to better than only in-game locking or only fps limiter...

Ok...wow. Its 7 hours later (give or take). About 4 of which I spent going in and out of the sim trying to figure this out. I have settled with *******' config tweaker, with the exception of the vsync tweak (I turned it off). I left everything else it wanted to fix, on. This was after removing it all and starting from scratch. I noticed hardly anything at all modifying the config myself one addition at a time (compared to running his tweaked config), perhaps a few less blurries with his modified config. I also lowered the level of AA in inspector, from 8XS etc....down to 4. Basically half of what NickN recommended.

So what do I have....stable, smooth as glass - but no Vsync....

No dreaded micro drag, but I do miss Vsync due to some image tearing...but I can live with that, knowing I am chasing a pipe dream (constant smooth FSX).

I have my frames locked at 30 in game (tried external locker and saw no difference), 1920x1080 resolution, trilinear filtering (per NickN), AA unchecked (forcing it via inspector. I noticed if you set application controlled in Inspector and check AA in game you do not get any AA - is this an Nvidia thing??) Global res = Very High, aircraft shadows off, LOD large, mesh comp. = 100, Mesh res = 5m, Texture res = 7cm, water low 2.x, scenery compexity = Very dense, Autogen Dense, special effects = High, clouds = 60 miles, coverage density = High, airline traffic at 16% (per Orbx), General Aviation at 100, airport vehicle density = None, Road vehicles 12%, and Leisure boats 50%

Now I need to figure out why REX keeps popping clouds in and out on me....off to troubleshoot one last area. (how many times have you said that??) Thanks for the help guys, I kinda blended suggestions. If anyone can help me out on why I have to force AA via Inspector to have AA, I would love to know.. thx.

Really good to see that you have smoothed out you FSX config!!

I forgot to mention that all my micro-stutter tests were done with Vsync active.

Yes, you can trade off between smoothness and image tearing, depending on the Vsync state. That is of course if you eliminate all other sources of micro-stuttering.

But I found that I am more distracted by the image tearing (in all games, not only in FSX) than by some micro-dragging every 6-10 seconds.

Another suggestion for smoothness from an ORBX manual: setting Texture Res = 15cm can cure some micro-stuttering, trading off some road sharpness.

I tried everything under the sun with Vsync active and could not find a solution that did not at least stutter, drag, or do something odd enough for me to notice. With it disabled, it seems I can fly under constant smooth conditions at all times with my settings up, REX going full bore, and a ton of traffic/life around while in a fully loaded PNW area outside Seattle. I only notice slight tearing while panning down to the right or left anyway, very very hard to notice on my rig when looking in the direction of the flight.

I know my rig can handle this and then some - I'm convinced it has to do with FSX and how it handles Vsync in regards to refresh rate on the monitor. Down the road perhaps I'll snag a 120hz and see if that takes care of it, but for now I'm happy.

Im an FPS gamer at heart and have NEVER used Vsync because in FPS land things have to be beyond snappy at all times.

I blame this all on Flight actually. I probably would have never noticed the drag if I had not spent hours flying around Hawaii in the RV, fully pegged and smooth as butter with Vsync on!

So.....Flight=Vsync on butter smooth (for me)

FSX=Vsync off (or I will lose my mind and many hours of sleep trying to find the "magic" config)

I will try lowering the texture res to see if that helps. But with FSX stripped down completely, flying in the desert or open water - I still get the drag with Vsync on....I'll see though.

Thanks for the cloud fix Graham, I will give it a try.

If you use FSDT airports then you should update their addon manager or whatever its called. Old versions of this software is known to cause stuttering every xth second

Thank you very much for this. Now that you mention it, I was getting an x Second hard stutter which I don't recall having before installing FSDT product. I did a recent upgrade of the add-on mgr and now recall the hard stutter may have disappeared. Last night when I went up, I was prompted w/ the reminder that there was an upgrade available, I ignored it, then loaded up a flight plan and noticed hard stutter was there again. I did not put 2n2 together, so again, thank you for this insight--I hope that's it! This has nothing to do w/ the refresh rate related stutter issue described by Word Not Allowed. I had wondered where this came from because I have a very lean install of Vista 64, no AV software, no Defender, and most services that can be disabled are. And for most of its installation I have not had a hard stutter issue. I have excellent flight smoothness and image clarity between those hard stutters, which as I think of it does improve as my flight progresses. Despite FSDT's excellent work I have always questioned having such an embedded product which seems to put tentacles in to FSX that makes me guess it would have higher risk of some unintended consequences, but this of course is just a guess. I love lean installations that just do what they need to do and do it really well, and that's all! This is quite probably why I totally loathe MS Office 2010 (or 2007 if that also sported the Ribbon from Down Under). And the other reason, is cuz I must be getting to be an old codger!

Just an update to this since I also had experienced the predictable stutter.. I have found the culprit.. Ultimate Traffic 2. I have absolutely no more hitching issues. I'd get a STRONG hitch about once a minute in spot view.. Then today I decided to track down the problem because I was 100% certain it wasn't CFG settings at this point.. Ultimate Traffic 2 was the first addon I removed and low and behold it was the solution also. I only had traffic at 20% so.. Yeah.. That addon is useless to me now.

I would tinker with each of the settings and options before uninstalling it. Might just be one particular area that isn't playing nice with your setup.
