April 15, 201214 yr Hello dear, simmers, I have been using REX for some time now and yes the textures are excellent. However, every time I set a Thunder Storm weather from within FSX list, all of my a/c tend to bank heavily to the right or left, which is extremely annoying. I am also learning more about Active Sky 2012, and though the developer has lots of explanation on their product, I would also like to hear from those of you who have used both products. So, it is my understanding that Active Sky also inputs textures, are the textures HD, and as good or better than REX? Active Sky has a steep price; so before I jump into it, I prefer to get the facts on it. Again, I have REX and it is a great product; however if Active Sky is much, much better in terms of Textures and Weather Engine, then I'll make the switch. Johhny
April 15, 201214 yr So, it is my understanding that Active Sky also inputs textures, are the textures HD, and as good or better than REX? Yes they are Hi Res; Better? That is completely subjective! IMO they are at least on par with REX the nice thing about the textures is you can still use both. Save your favorites in "snapshots" using AS2012 and you're set. Active Sky has a steep price; so before I jump into it, I prefer to get the facts on it. Use the search engine there has been alot of discussion on this. I own both, like both, but prefer the weather depiction of AS2012. however if Active Sky is much, much better in terms of Textures and Weather Engine, then I'll make the switch Again, totally subjective and there is no need to choose one or the other they can play fine together. My opinion is that the textures of AS2012 are not "Much, Much" better than Rex but I do like some sets better than what Rex has to offer. Rex water is still the FSX King for now. While expensive I don't think you'd be disappointed with AS2012. I would certainly buy it again and recommend it to a friend even though I have had Rex for some time. RE Thomason Jr.
April 15, 201214 yr The weather engine in AS2012 is without equal IMO. Simply the best. And they have done their homework to make sure the wx engine works beautifully. I too am an owner of REX and to be honest, i dont use it anymore because AS2012 has a great set of textures that replace REX for me. AS2012 is worth every penny to me. April 16, 201214 yr AS2012 hands down. Great weather engine and the graphics are better than REX and are more frame rate friendly. My 2 cents... VATSIM: P2 | I1
April 17, 201214 yr Just gave AS2012 a try, and immediately uninstalled it. The water looks bad compared to REX, and the sky looks simspons-like. It's not bad and I would've used it if it gave me much better FPS, but in flying through clouds gave me worse FPS even on stock 1024x1024 settings John doe
April 17, 201214 yr Johnny, did you open two threads on this? http://forum.avsim.n...active-sky-2012 I was confused for a moment. Just gave AS2012 a try, and immediately uninstalled it. I think that's a bit fast. There should be tons of textures to pick from. However, I think the real comparison on REX and AS2012 can start when that free REX update has arrived. The REX/HIFI textures should mainly differ in the art aspect, not so much on the fps impact, when running the same resolution. Just thinking theory though.
April 17, 201214 yr I am a big fan of REX, but if we are comparing just the weather engine, I believe AS2012 has the edge. I have NEVER seen more realistic low vis weather then I have after purchasing AS2012. Scott KGPI
April 17, 201214 yr Just gave AS2012 a try, and immediately uninstalled it Hello How many of the texture sets did you try ? there are over 60 cumulus textures alone and dozens of sky combinations. Did you enjoy using the weather engine?. Did you select 32bit or DXT textures ? I would say that you at least need to give AS2012 a proper trial as the textures are great and the weather engine is far more advanced than anything else out there. Sounds like you hardly tested it.
April 17, 201214 yr Okai, which textures would you recommend? I just had the impression rex water and clouds looked way better. Especially the water. Also I don't use REX weather i'm trying FSrealWX with REX. I used the "use set for current weather" option in AS2012 btw I do have one question which I have with all three (as2012, rex and fsrealWX): I always have this big gap above the clouds with nothing, and it ends with a very thin layer of low-res clouds. If I fly through the clouds its very ugly Any idea? John doe
April 17, 201214 yr The main advantage of AS2012 is for me the historical weather! Most of us will come home at evening but wouldn't be flying at present time, meaning in darkness. So coming home, setting FSX to the wonderfull foggy weather which was todays morning is unbeatable... Or have had a stormy day a few days ago? Simply set FSX to this day and you'll have a bumpy ride... I will try it whenever I get a chance. ASE seems to be the best as, well.
