April 27, 201214 yr So many conflicting info out there http://forwardthinki...hmark-surprises And good review here. Particularly about his emphasis on the Voltage and OC of the 3770. Nothing new for us... but I am glad he is talking about it unlike the Intel fan boys who are just WOWing about this chip without any real info. Manny Beta tester for SIMStarter
April 27, 201214 yr Not at all. Tests show the same thing. Besides, they didn't test clock for clock (at high clocks, testing 4.4SB vs 4.7IB), which gives me an idea how much these guys know about testing processors.
April 27, 201214 yr If the Processor won't overclock similarly after a MoBo update, couldn't the problem be with your motherboard? Could you de-update the mobo somehow and see if you can get the overclock back? Also 4.8 is not too shabby, I don't think that you would see an appreciable difference in FSX unless you got to significantly over 5 ghz (5.2 or 5.3)
April 27, 201214 yr It seems that SandyBridge is the best bet at the moment. Ivy Bridge seems to be a bit more mainstream so I am crossing my fingers for Haswell.
April 28, 201214 yr Author The 2700K is installed and running at 4.8 Ghz offset to max 1.34v, but usually hovers around 1.208v to 1.30v when running FSX. Prime 95 shows the 4.8Ghz temperatures staying in the low to mid 50'sC. I took it to 5.0 at 1.42 max offset and it was stable on Prime 95 at the low 60'sC, but I will lower it to 4.8 as that is all I need. Perhaps I will set up another OC at 4.6 GHz with HT and run that for non-FSX applications. All in all, I am quite impressed at how easy it reaches high numbers with extremely low volts and heat. Hopefully I have kicked the can far enough away for at least a year or two, maybe more. Kind regards,
April 28, 201214 yr Author If the Processor won't overclock similarly after a MoBo update, couldn't the problem be with your motherboard? Not sure Ping Pong. But there was no trouble with the 2700 at 5.0Ghz with 1.42v max offset. I think it could likely hit 5.3Ghz or 5.4Ghz at around 1.50v if I was willing to blow it up. I'm not, so 4.8Ghz at 1.34v is just fine. Kind Regards,
April 28, 201214 yr Stephen, one thing I don't understand: why did you go from 2600K at 4.8 to 2700K at 4.8?

I'm wondering that too Stephen, do you have money to burn? I didn't plan on running the i7-2700K at 4.8Ghz. I was thinking more like 5.0Ghz or more. But it is in such a sweet spot at 4.8Ghz that I levelled off there. Maybe I am just getting more conservative over time! No Jose, not any money to burn or otherwise, but decided if I was going to stay a while in Sandy Bridge anyway, it might as well be with the best 1155 CPU on the planet. If I want to run at 5.0Ghz or more, I can always do so. Stephen, those are nice temperatures. What kind of cooling solution are you using? I use the Prolimatech Megahelems with dual fans and IC Diamond 24 carat thermal compound. The result is icy cool beauty with a bit of bling. See pics below in signature. :Nerd: Kind regards,
April 28, 201214 yr Hopefully I have kicked the can far enough away for at least a year or two, maybe more. Kind regards, The can is done being kicked for FSX IMO! With the direction of CPU development currently I can't see much more coming out of intel. Haswell might add a more little unless there is something about tri-gate which will get better in a big way. Haswell gets another big boost in on board GPU it appears. The real hope lies in projects like P3D w/ DX11 and other. If they can somehow revise the code to better use multicore then maybe there is some hope there too. If not, Isn't the OS locked to the MB and CPU? Manny Manny Beta tester for SIMStarter
April 28, 201214 yr Author Hi Stephen, Did you have to reinstall the OS when changing CPU? If not, Isn't the OS locked to the MB and CPU? Manny Hi Manny, Nope. no problem. I think it's a change in the MB that will prompt a re-registeration for the OC. In and out in 30 minutes or less, including cleaning up the paste, and accumulated dust off the heatsink and fans. The Megahelems is a breeze to take off and put back on. Kind regards,
April 28, 201214 yr I plan on upgrading my PC in the next few weeks. Ivy looks nice but since I mostly gaming, SB will suffice. I'm debating if I should go with the 2600k or the 2700k. I would like to purchase the GTX 680 but is sold out almost everywhere. Same question as Allard, what cooling soluiton are you using Stephen? Christopher Edwards
