May 17, 201214 yr Author Hi mate It updates automatically through AS2012/Vatsim its up to u what u select but by default its set to automatic updates through the programme With the textures, and this is one feature i love, u can import ur flightplan into AS2012 or create one and it will automatically pick out the textures based on current weather. U then select install and in a few mins it will have loaded the textures into fsx, u can randomize textures or select/create them but i find the wx based texture option the best. I little pointer....in ur cfg change the cloud coverage density from 8 to 12, you'll have a lovely overcast when the conditions are but remember, any changes u make in ths fsx settings menues will cause this to revert back to default value 8. Hope that helps and enjoy! Oh yeh, if u have any of their older engines u should contact HIFI and they may sort u out a discount if they are still doing that. Cheers for this Chris. I just got it, was on sale! Will sort out everything tomorrow. - Luke Pabari
May 18, 201214 yr Will sort out everything tomorrow. Luke Just a word of encouragement. There is a lot to sort out since there are a lot of options for the features in AS2012. Don't become discouraged. Read the documentation that comes with the addon. I started using AS2012 last December when it first was released and I am still messing around with the various settings trying to get them just right. Stay at it. Good luck. May 18, 201214 yr just found out that the REX weather engine is not compatable with FSX. This might be the reason that REX, is trying to fix with Essentials. This was told to me by a long time MS engineer. I quit using REX, fewer CTD, now.Active SKY2012 was made for FSX, and works good. Jerry Sorry Jerry, but that's complete nonsense. Of course REX is compatible with FSX, it was designed for FSX. Unless you are trying to use the FS9 version of REX with FSX. REX plus FSX plus FSUIPC wind smoothing works beautifully for me and most users. Essential will be a whole new ball game and offer great features, like accurate winds aloft.
May 18, 201214 yr In answer to "What is the difference in AS2012 and ASE?" AS2012's weather engine seems to be much improved vs. ASEs. No problems at all with S-Turns etc for me and I'm running the default settings. I think it's doing a better job with the haze/visibility stuff than ASE did too. The really big change is that AS2012 introduced textures like those in REX, and tightly integrated them to the weather you are currently experiencing. You no longer need REX, or a registered version of FSUIPC, to get a weather environment that looks and behaves realistically. The argument that you will hear on a regular basis that REX 'can' be quickly and easily configured is sort of true. It can be done if you know REX very well, you know exactly what you are doing, and you are not changing much from the last time you flew. AS2012 offers a different approach. It allows you to simply enter (or select) your flight plan and it will automatically (and pretty quickley) apply all the textures you need for the weather you will encounter in the locations you encounter it. You can still do all the fancy stuff if you need to, but the point is that you don't 'need' to if you don't want to. Paul Smith.
May 18, 201214 yr They both do the same as one another they both load textures as per the weather your going to fly, rex has the better textures where as as012 at the moment is just ahead in the weather side of things but that soon to change when the rex essential comes out I7-8700k,Corsair h1101 cooler ,Asus Strix Gaming Intel Z370 S11 motherboard, Corsair 32gb ramDD4,, gtx 1080ti Card, RM850 power supply Peter kelberg
May 18, 201214 yr To the OP.. You seriously should check out all the things REX Essentials is going to do for us. It's not just making FSX more pretty and realistic, they're adding some nice functionality regarding flight planning and the inclusion of "FlightAware". This is just a small taste compared to the vast improvements and additions included. I believe Essentials will be well worth the wait and the best part is all REX2 owners get a free update (already mentioned) so you could benefit from REX2 now.. I'm biased towards REX considering I do not have AS2012. If using FlightAware within REX, you can select the actual gate in which the plan states in its report. So with the new Flight Center we bring not just the basics, but realism and the community aspect. You can view the plan along with all of the associated waypoints including real winds aloft data for each waypoint. So programming your FMC within the latest installment of a third-party aircraft is much easier. The biggest gripes I have for REX: I get a frame hit of about -5fps when converting weather data and the sky flickers whilst doing so. Jon Preston
May 18, 201214 yr Guys, I am sure that Rex Essentials will be probably be great when it is launched, but until then... do we have to keep recomending it to everyone who wants weather? Rex was never the dominant player in the weather arena, it was better then FSX default if you had the paid for FSUIPC, but that isn't saying much. ASE always left REX behind with weather, now it does decent textures as well. Paul Smith.

As far as i know you dont need a paid version of fsupic or maybe you know different Didnt think ase had textures than again i mite be wrong again I7-8700k,Corsair h1101 cooler ,Asus Strix Gaming Intel Z370 S11 motherboard, Corsair 32gb ramDD4,, gtx 1080ti Card, RM850 power supply Peter kelberg

May 21, 201214 yr As far as i know you dont need a paid version of fsupic or maybe you know different Didnt think ase had textures than again i mite be wrong again AS2012 has lots of textures and does not require paid FSUIPC. Paul Smith.
May 21, 201214 yr AS2012 has lots of textures and does not require paid FSUIPC. And i was saying you dont need the paid version for it to stop the s turns for what you were referring to the rex users, yea i know that that as2012 got some textures but didnt know ase had. Since that was you were referring to in the earlier post you had made I7-8700k,Corsair h1101 cooler ,Asus Strix Gaming Intel Z370 S11 motherboard, Corsair 32gb ramDD4,, gtx 1080ti Card, RM850 power supply Peter kelberg
March 7, 201313 yr Hey folks, its been a while since this post was made, so i am looking for some update. What is the better option? rex, as2012 full or ase? I will only be in a position to buy one, so using rex for textures and as for engine isn't an option. Thanks Paul Westcott
March 7, 201313 yr Simple answer - get OpusFSX! Want some cool textures? Look for freeware ones or use REX.
