Why doesnt FSX just run on GOOGLE EARTH?

Featured Replies

seriously it looks way better from every height or distance. Looks better than Mega Scenery X. It just would make things so much better if my fsx would be made of google earth. Has anyone looked into doing this?

I don't think that would work. We would all have to have extremely large amounts of storage to store all of the imagery. But, if the data were stored on the cloud, we are going to need to see some serious jumps in cable line data transfer speeds.

I think the idea is great but I don't think the underlying tech is there yet.

Yes, someone has thought of this.

Try Googling Tileproxy

Wouldn't autogen not accurately place objects with that kind of scenery? Trees in swimming pools, houses in volcanos, etc.

houses in volcanos

lol

TP worked well with FS9. Never tried it with FSX.

Seem to recall some of the guys at the "visual flight" forum were well into it many moons ago...pre 2006. Site is very quiet these days. Might be worth a shuffty around the historic archives if they are still available.

Aside from everything else mentioned, you wouldn't have any night textures either so you would have to limit yourself to only flying the in the day, unless of course your fine with that.

I imagine you would also have issues with visible different shades of tiles of the google map textures that are taken at different times. I think it would probably look kind of ugly depending where you are flying. You also wouldn't have seasons.

Trees in swimming pools is not so inaccurate with some of the storms in Sydney :)

I think it's good for taking screenshots or making movies and not much else.

The limitations are too many and outweigh the visual benefit.

Just making sure - you do realize there is a flight simulator inside Google Earth, right? Basic of course but fun.

Tile Proxy works very well in FSX.... IF you have a fast data line and enough HD space to cache the images:

Aside from the drawbacks others have already mentioned, Tile Proxy is also limited to the default scenery templates (meshes) because this is what it uses for the major buildings and landmarks like in the videos. The most obvious drawback is you only get the full benefit of TP while flying VFR vs. IFR (commercial jets) as well.

I'm a big time Tileproxy user--almost all my FSX flights are done with Tileproxy. It took a few months of tweaking, but the result is great for VFR flight. My main use of FSX is for VFR, GA flight but even flights in the flight levels (like with RealAir's great Duke) look good when Tileproxy is running. The flip side to Tileproxy is it takes a good five minutes to initially load the textures (not a lot of time considering the amazing things it's doing in the background). Once my session is started Tileproxy keeps the textures loaded as I fly along at 200kts at a smooth 30fps. I've been flying FSX for a few years this way and it's greatly added to my enjoyment of the hobby.
