June 23, 201213 yr It seems the last update cut the power of the Maule in half? I just tried to do a job with 4 passengers, which I could easily do before the upgrade, but now I can't even reach my destination unless I fly around ever hill and stay close to the water...? I am moving at 80 knots tops in order to not hit the trees...! The Maule was a bit too fast, maybe, but this is too slow...! Unfortunately the Maule is the only plane to do the various jobs with... I will try a 3 passenger job now... BTW I didn't get a message the plane was too heavy.
June 23, 201213 yr I did a clandestine job yesterday, starting from 68kts winds from Upolu and I had no problem. I was crabbing @120kts no problem, could stabilize later with less wind @145kts... I did not tried to do passenger missions nor normal cargo one.
June 23, 201213 yr Hi Jeroen, Hi Franck, first, I had the same feeling, as it would be not so strong then before, but I made some tests and think, the maule is now more sensitive against weather conditions. I can reach "the old" vmax but depending on the actual weather it takes a longer time... June 23, 201213 yr The Maule is the same. However, the weight of your load has much greater impact on your climb performance and sink rate than it did before. Try taking the plane up empty, then bag it out to gross max (or beyond) to see the difference. Empty, it still climbs like a rocket. Remember how we always commented before that overloading the plane didn't make much difference? I guess somebody noticed.
June 23, 201213 yr Ok, I will check the weather. And it's nice that the load has a greater impact. I am doing a hospital job now, 17 kts headwind and at 5000 feet I can get a speed between 100 and 120 knots, providing I change the mixture. Another thing: those nose and bank trims... I had to apply rudder all the freakin' time, so I decided to assign keys to those two new trim options. The bank trim doesn't seem to do anything at all, but the nose trim does: it banks the plane... However, apart from the bank indicator there is no trimindicator anywhere (not that I can see) so I don't know how much I am trimming and I also don't see an option to center the trim...? How am I supposed to know when the trim is centered again? Or do I, from now on, also constantly have to set the right nose trim...? I am a bit confused here.
June 23, 201213 yr Hm, I am near Bradshaw now, trying to get to Hilo, but at 7000 feet I am struggling to stay above 80 knots. Besides that, I am constantly banking sideways, nose trimming all the time, applying rudder all the time, using the ailerons all the time... The pane even banks into the 18 knots headwind every now and then. I am using the Low and threatening theme and I wonder why I am having such a hard time doing this simple job... Something is different and I don't really like it. This way the Maule is of no use in Alaska...
June 23, 201213 yr I sure noticed it takes a lot longer to climb with a load. It was some surprise when I could not make it over that dang mountain that was in my way!
June 23, 201213 yr After checking the folders and files that were updated, only the Icon and Stearman have been changed in some way. They definitely " feel " and sound better ! Fred. Frederic Steiner.
June 23, 201213 yr Another weird thing: the fuel gauges show I have full fuel... while I have 40% (according to what I loaded and the HUD). What's happening here?
June 23, 201213 yr Another thing: those nose and bank trims... I had to apply rudder all the freakin' time, so I decided to assign keys to those two new trim options. The bank trim doesn't seem to do anything at all, The Maule may not have aileron trim tabs (I haven't looked). If it doesn't, the control won't do anything. It's like pushing the prop control buttons in the Icon. but the nose trim does: it banks the plane... In an aircraft with a large rudder, far off the longitudinal axis of the plane, it's not uncommon for rudder deflection (or trim) to induce some roll. The Maule's rudder trim has always done this in Flight. If you mouse over the rudder trim handle just to the left of the copilot's yoke, you can see the rudder trim setting in the tooltip. And for what it's worth, if you are in a high-power but low-speed situation, resulting in a high angle of attack, you can expect the aircraft to display a left-turning tendency. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P-factor The affect seems much more pronounced now than it used to be, but perhaps because the aircraft never needed to placed in such a condition for a long period of time before due to the load-weight changes. Another weird thing: the fuel gauges show I have full fuel... while I have 40% (according to what I loaded and the HUD). What's happening here? Are you looking just at the Main tanks, or the Aux tanks also (pressing the buttons above the fuel gauges)? Main tanks full with Aux empty puts you right about half-full, total.

Main tanks full with Aux empty puts you right about half-full, total. About the rudder trim: the nose trim left and right keys, which DO have an effect, aren't the same as the rudder trim: I can press the keys for those nose left and right trim and the rudder trim indicator stays at zero... About the tanks: my bad. Aux are indeed empty.
June 23, 201213 yr About the rudder trim: the nose trim left and right keys, which DO have an effect, aren't the same as the rudder trim: I can press the keys for those nose left and right trim and the rudder trim indicator stays at zero... I just checked and the rudder trim keys move the rudder trim handle for me. Note that there is an invisible "half degree" position between "Neutral" and "1" on the knob, so it takes two presses to make it say 1. However, you can see the knob itself rotate slightly if you only press the key once.

That also got me confused...) Anyway, now I can indeed check what the setting is. Nice.

Strange, because the RV-6 is acting differently now too. Nothing big, but 1) lowering/raising flaps is MUCH quieter than it used to be for some reason, and 2) spinning the engine up to 100% throttle prior to takeoff takes noticeably longer than before. There's no place like this place, so this must be the place.
