GMap for Flight Will No Longer Connect!

Featured Replies

Well, poop! I was just using GMap for Flight a few days ago, and now...

...after having just bought both the WAC and Sectionals for Alaska...

...suddenly GMap will no longer connect to Flight.

I did install v2.1 a few weeks days ago because of the update to Flight + Alaska DLC, and as I said it was working fine when I last used it last week.

I also created the FSWidgetsGMap.ini file to include my gmapkey and email, but whether the file is in the folder or not, GMap simply won't connect.

I've had good luck with the latest (June 30) beta version available on the FSWidgets forum. Earlier, it was noted that it would connect in Alaska only at inland locations, like McGrath. The latest version has been flawless anywhere I've tried it.

Rick

Edit: Now that I reread your post, it appears that the connection issue may not be related to the version at all?

Hi,

GMAP has been updated twice within the last several days. There were connection problems.

Fermin got me sorted out with the latest version of 2.1 (should be 2.11) dated 6/30/2012. The version released on 6/29/2012 is the one that would no longer connect.

Now I'm parked at PAIL and had GMap connect instantly, and I even have my prior saved PAIL to PAEN flightplan loaded with the Alaska Sectional!

Thanks ever so much to Fermin for the blazingly fast outstanding support!

Did I emphasize "outstanding" too much? I don't think so!

Fermin bailed me out a few days ago when I had a problem with the ini file I made. Great tech support.

Yeah, with such great support, I think I'll buy the new "Flight Planner" for Android tomorrow so I can get some more use out of my 10.7" Toshiba Tablet! This way I can create flightplans without having to quit flight and load FSX!

I'm eagerly awaiting compatibility with the Android Gmap app. That $14.95 is already set aside, waiting.

Do you have a (legal) link to that version? I would like to add that to my tutorial on how to use GMap as a popup.

And btw yes, great support.

I also look forward to a Flight version of that, however I will only buy it if it will support Flightplans. I looked at that app for FSX last year but noticed it doesn't support flightplans (while the Apple version does). A moving map is nice too, of course, but being able to use flightplans is even nicer...

BTW Another thing that is holding me back on buying those charts: how old or new are they? Are they made with FSX in mind (which would be great because Flight seems to use the same database) or are they real world charts and hence not totally compatible with Flight?

And another thing: there is World Nav Data available: that's not as detailed as the stuff that's available for the US. So if MS decides to create a region outside of the US, we will have to do with more simple maps?

Hi Jeroen,

To answer your questions:

Do you have a (legal) link to that version? I would like to add that to my tutorial on how to use GMap as a popup.

The link in question is the same one you used in your other post (BTW thanks for sharing that info, very helpful).

noticed it doesn't support flightplans

True, it didn't support the magenta line drawing due to an Android WebView limitation, however we are now preparing V3.0 and this will support the magenta lines as we have completely rewritten the mapping engine which uses SVG for rendering lines to get around that limitation.

Refreshing you should say that, normally we get questions about how recent they are which is puzzling as they for use in the sim only. The charts are not current (not ancient either) so should align well with the data in FSX and MS Flight.

The World Nav Data product is different from the chart data, it refers to the toggable data icons (Airports, VOR's, NDB's, etc.), a demo of which is in every copy of GMap (KSFO area).

Hope that answers your queries without sounding too much like I'm spruiking any product. :)

Good to know. Having older charts is indeed better for Flight, as it's airfield/navaid data looks around 6-8 years out of date.

Any estimate of when we might see Flight compatibility for the Android version, or is it still to be determined? I am eager to buy that and have it working on my tablet.

Great answers, thanks! Every answer is exactly what I was hoping for, haha! I am going to have a closer look at the possible options: don't know yet if I will buy World Nav Data or those WAC charts... Looking forward to the Android V3.0 version for Flight! (Er... there WILL be a version for Flight, right?)

I can't offer any estimates or predictions (sorry), but the desktop version of GMap for MS Flight is serving as a test bed for MS Flight support which as you know is a challenging proposition. Once we have connectivity to MS Flight working without any major issues we will most likely add MS Flight support to the Network Pack utility (the utility that sends the data to the mobile apps).

Thanks for the info, and the support for Flight. Boy, does it need it.

+1

Question: Does GMap with World Nav Data work on the popup window with MS FLIGHT?

I have emailled [email protected] suggesting that they support the FsWidgets project. This would certainly benefit MS FLIGHT, turning it into an even more tempting flight simulation platform, and allowing for those interested in using Gmap a better use of the simulator itself, while not compromising MS's plans to restrict 3pd devlopment.
