Why am I having low FPS on this setup?

Featured Replies

This is my setup:

ASUS P9X79 Motherboard (LGA2011)

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

Intel i7-3820 @ 4.5 ghz (OC'd)

8GB DDR3 KINGSTON "DUALCHANNEL" HYPER-X RAM clocked at 1626 MHZ

GEFORCE GTX680 2GB DDR5

2TB SATA 6GB/s 7200 RPM

Iiyama E2475HDS 24' LED 1920x1080 FullHD 2 ms monitor

Yet when I use a combo of addons like this (which I spent heaps of money on):

REX Essential, UTX, GEX, World mesh, PMDG 737NGX, ASX12

+

any of the major airport addons from Aerosoft like Charles de Gaulle, Frankfurt, Heathrow or Flytampa Athens, I only see 15 FPS on average when either on the ground, or looking at the airport from above. Panning views on the ground is extremely annoying due to the stuttering 10(!) FPS I'm getting.

I realize it's a lot of add-ons at once, but I want the most realistic experience, and quite frankly, I thought a setup like mine should be able to run a 2006 game smoother.

I used venetubo for my CFG. Framerate is locked to 30 internally. I also tried NickN's and other's CFG's to no avail.

You can download and take a look at my cfg here:

And here's a pic of my nvidia inspector settings:

Vertical Sync is Forced On in my setting. I tried that 1/2 refresh rate and got constant stutters. I use Unlimited Frames as well.

Thanks for the response, will try it out tomorrow morning (Central Europe Time here)

What kind of framerates are you seeing around the major airport addons in the PMDG? (assuming you've got these)

BTW, I added my CFG to the first post

A guy posted here today that he setup his computer IAW NickN, Bojote, and Word Not Allowed. He was getting smooth 25 FPS, using your addons, on a 1.73 GHZ CPU and a old video card. Correct setup should solve your problem.

Well you are using 8xSQ with 2xSGSS...thats a heavy load.

Try changing to 8xS with 2xSGSS instead. Had really good results with that.

I can't believe this ######. I've tried every setting, every configuration. My computer WILL NOT push for more than 16 FPS on the ground at Aerosoft Frankfurt in the PMDG 737-800, and looking at some places of the airport, as low as 11 FPS. What a waste of freaking time and money.

Back to playing BF3 smoothly at max settings I suppose

Are you using some traffic addon? For example, MTX ramped up to 100% brings any computer on its knees in the vicinity of larger hubs as AI is terrible CPU resource hog. I get pretty much my lowest FPS around New York with pretty much same addons as you have spiced with Aerosoft's Manhattan X. This is just because of three big airports in the area (JFK, La Guardia, New Jersey) and MTX injecting huge amount of AI planes on and around those airports. Without AI traffic FPS are a lot higher.

I do have MyTraffix X, but I don't remember what it's configured at. I haven't really noticed any traffic lately now that I think of it.. WHere do I see the % MTX is set at? My default traffic is set to 0 in-game

You adjust amount of MTX generated traffic just by using FSX sliders. If sliders are set to 0, you don't have traffic so that definitely isn't your problem.

Alright, thanks for clearing that up.

Been fiddling with my configurations all day, gained a couple of FPS but still stuck in the 15-20 fps range for Frankfurt

I, too, was having low FSP in New York with the following add-ons (Manhattan X, GEX, Ultimatate Traffic, U.S. Terrain, REX and PMDG. I have an aliewware aurora overclocked to 4.5Ghz. I get an average 30 fps with traffic set at 85% and ground traffic at 40%.

Once I disabled hyperthreading, I noticed a boost in performance. I disabled it because I needed to bring down the heat generated by the overclock.

I am very happy with my alienware although it costs about 50% more than buidling it. What Iike about it is that the parts are nicely placed, preventing overheating.

I'll send you a video tonigt of a fly-over Mahattan, landing at JFK. On average, the fps stands at 30. Good enough, I guess.

That sounds very good man. What are your in-game settings like? Have you applied any tweaks to your cfg?

I've tried disabling hyperthreading, but I noticed no difference. It's definitely the PMDG eating up a lot of the frames, as I'm flying the airport in smaller planes with pretty much 30 FPS

Make sure to post the link here, thanks! :)

Thanks,

I had no heat issues, but I get better performance with HT disabled and AFFINITYMASK=14 (14 = 1110)

You have AFFINITYMASK=224, so you are currently using 3 of 8 virtual cores, which is definitely under-utilizing your processor (224 = 11100000). If you're going to leave HT on, set AFFINITYMASK=252 (252 = 11111100). This will utilize 6 of your 8 virtual cores.

My hunch is that this is currently the biggest drag on your performance.

Well you are using 8xSQ with 2xSGSS...thats a heavy load. Try changing to 8xS with 2xSGSS instead. Had really good results with that.

I'd start with:

Antialiasing Setting = 8xS [Combined: 1x2 SS + 4x MS]

AntiAliasing - Transparency Supersampling = 8x Supersampling

These are the settings I use with a GTX580.

From there, try AA Setting = 8xSQ and see how that impacts performance. Then add 2x Sparse Grid Supersampling and take another look at performance.

You can check out my system stats. I get pretty solid 30+fps with the NGX at challenging airports like AS Frankfurt and all FSDT sceneries, which are very complex and detailed. I'm also using AS2012 + REX-E for textures, with settings of HD clouds, 8 cloud layers and 110nm cloud draw distance. The only situation in which my rig struggles is with scenery that's not properly optimized for FSX, and I've only encountered a few of these.

There are definitely ways to achieve better FSX performance on your rig. The process of getting there requires patience, research, and of course lots of trial and error.

Thanks a lot for the thorough response, Jev. I'm going to test your suggested settings out in a bit.

Here's my current cfg, if you want to take a look at it and make further suggestions:
