For People Wondering Whats Next

Featured Replies

First off i wanna say hello as im new to the forms. I am however an active reader of the forms and try to keep up with whats going on. Since the word got out that Microsoft has ended development on Flight, It caught my attention that people were wondering whats next? So I thought i would let people know about Outerra terrain, Its a 3D planetary engine for seamless planet rendering from space down to the surface. Can use arbitrary resolution of elevation data, refining it to centimeter resolution using fractal algorithms. Its not really a Flight sim atleast not yet. An integrated flight dynamics model library (JSBSim) provides fully configurable physics and math model defining the movement of aircraft or rocket under various natural or applied forces and moments. Heres some screenshot for u guys and there web page. Its got great potential so we will just have to see were it goes. By no means am i calling this a flight simulator i just no there are a lot of ideas floating around about what to do with the engine and a flight simulator came up as an idea. http://www.outerra.com/

Flights cockpits look truly magnificent compared to this, but I agree the world is quite well done.

Wow. Impressive.

We've already had many threads about Outerra e.g. in the Hangar forum.

It is marvelous but now it is only the 3D world, so it will take a lot a time before it can become a full feature sim as we now understand it thinking of FS9, FSX, Prepar3D or X-Plane.

But when the day comes, our wives and dogs will be in danger - who will take them outside when both the weather and the landscape look better in the monitor? Big%20Grin.gif

Its still under development as we speak so there no telling what we could see from it in the near future. Personally speaking it has the best water graphics i have ever seen! Yeah i knew there were a few post about it but i haven't seen much said about it so i thought i would let people know. It really has great potential in the right hands.

Outerra is OpenGL terrain, or more like planetary rendering engine and tech demo, not a simulator. It has some aircraft and vehicle physics too, but it has no other simulator qualities to make it a deep simulation and it is not intended to be one as it is right now.

I'm not saying its a flight simulator im just putting out there that it has to potential to be. :P Really atm its considered a world simulator. I just thought i would let people know cause there were a lot of suggestions floating around about ideas for the engine and a flight simulator was one of the ideas.

I'm gonna move this into Hangar Chat as:

1) it doesn't belong into the Flight forum

2) it is well known for what it is

No problem i put it in the flight form because i saw quite a few people asking about what could be next.

I've casually follow the development of this and agree that it looks awesome. Possibly in the next 5 years or sooner, or longer, its possible that it could become our next gen sim platform and 3rd party developers can dive into it.

It looks great and like someone else said, we could sim our lives away with a platform that looked like that.
