Approach Attitude

Featured Replies

Hi

Been flying the NGX for a while now and love it!

I always like to review my approach and touchdowns after landing and it always appears as though in order to land at vref the pitch of the nose always seems high (prior to flare) and it always looks like a near tail strike!

Whats the trick? Normal landing with flaps 30 and fully stable at at least 1000ft at vref +20kts ususally on the ILS...

Any tips please :-D

Cheers

VREF + 20? It should be (as I understand it) VREF + 5 but don't hold be to that if I'm wrong haha.

Maybe try to keep the power on just a hair longer and flare a little easier. I usually power off between 40 and 50 feet, then start a nice, slow flair at 30 feet.

Thanks!

Hi,

Everything about landing attitudes is shown in the Flight Crew Training Manual. Have a look at Page 6.11 and further.

Vref + 20 is a serious wind correction. At that speed, you should have a very low pitch attitude. According to the FCTM, your pitch attitude should be -2° to 0°.

Are you sure your flaps are really at 30?

Maybe you come in a bit too low and start the flare maneuvre too soon? How long are you flaring? What is your touchdown speed? What is your vertical speed at the threshold and just before touching?

Try once to fly the plane at Vref+5 almost completely to the ground without flaring to get the feel of it.

Hi and many thanks for the suggestions.

Last night I thought I would try the ILS right down to minimums with A/T and AP connected the aircraft (from spot view) still looked very nose high? If the FMC and computers are flying surely the aircraft should be correctly configured?

One thing to note we approached the Glideslope from underneath (as normal) however we were quite late maybe it was trying to fly straight and level but fully configured for landing...?

Cheers

I think I may have realised an issue?

The APP mode disconnects, when I try and reconnnect it engages and then disconnects again!

Anyone hazard a guess as what wrong, has happened on the last three ILS approaches to different airports...

?

What does FMA says? It's normal that APP button light goes out when glide slope is intercepted.

Hi

Here goes a normal ILS into KDFW ILS 17C

Looks like the pitch is high?

Need a pic of the fmc too to see what your weight and vref is. Your picture makes it seem like you are way too overweight for 135 knots

And your AOA is 12.4. I don't use AOA, but I'm sure that's too high for a normal approach.

Does the TAT say +42? You might have a weather issue, too.

My AOA is usually around 2 - 3.5 on approach, I have never seen 12! 6.5 is the highest I recall seeing in normal flight. Yes your approach pitch is waaay too high. As mentioned we need to see weight, are you entering the correct ZFW?

Maybe he isnt too Heavy but Imbalanced?

Do you load the NGX via the FMC?

Hi, and thanks to everyone for taking the time to reply :)

OK I think it may have something to do with payload? I use http://fuel.aerotexas.com/ to set my fuel and to be honest I have never looked at the payload as I have always used the default, the ZFW is automatically calculated from FMC right?

Could be we are a tad heavy in the back  I will try different settings tomorrow for a quick trip from KDFW to KMSY (as part of my jaunt around the USA  ) Would anyone have any pax/payload settings or even fuel calc for this trip (737-700)?

Cheers again everyone

Try loading your fuel using the CDU and not some external program (which is a big no no for the NGX), I'm pretty sure it is causing the problem.
