August 15, 201213 yr This is mainly aimed at those that haven't flown clandestine missions and for those new to Flight. I don't think I've ever checked the job board at Atka with a night setting and not found a clandestine mission. Generally it is a +- 90nm flight to Adak. Fairly easy mission if you keep low and set the destination about 30 degrees off the nose of the aircraft until you get to the island. Then skirt the shore to approach the airport. Another prime airport for these missions is Annette Island. Seems like there is one there too most of the time. I don't pay much attention to points, but these missions flown at night generally result in the high 20k points. If you want to earn points in a big way, this is how to do it. Enjoy. Thank you. August 15, 201213 yr One of the reasons I invested in GMap was to help me with those. Have to start searching for some night flights :-) Flying gliders since 1980 Flightsimming since 1992 AMD Ryzen 5600x, 32GB RAM, GPU Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti 8 GB, 1 TB and 500 GB nvme2 SSD drives, HP 27" 60Hz LED monitor @ 1920x1080, T16000, Hotas from old X52 Pro, Saitek Combat Rudder Pro (2010 model)
August 15, 201213 yr I've failed a couple of Alaskan clandestine missions due to the mountains. I can't get my plane to climb fast enough and otherwise have to breach the 1000ft limit or take a very long detour, one that can double the already long flight. I'm guessing there is some kind of thin air simulation going on as well, because after 5-6000ft, my aircraft won't climb further or with an upward attitude of more than a degree or so without stalling. I already dump so much fuel at the start I get warned of both being too heavy and having not enough fuel. To make matters worse, the other day I tried the random weather and had to fly into 68kt winds barely moved forward at all. I just gave that one up. Need a faster aircraft for long trips.

Whether it is regular jobs or clandestine missions, when in the mountains I use the in-game map (glance) view and fly valleys. As for smaller mountains, as long as you stay below 1000 ft. agl, you'll be ok. As for climbing, make sure you adjust the mixture. The higher you go, the more you lean. Keep trying, you'll get it. As for smaller mountains, as long as you stay below 1000 ft. agl, you'll be ok. GMap works pretty good for that as well, I have a second monitor and keep it open on it. The first and so far only clandenstine job in Alaska I flew, took me over several moutains. Using GMap for reference, I was able to stay in valleys pretty much all the way. Don B
August 16, 201213 yr In Hawaii, I usually make a beeline for the sea and take the long way round skirting the coast. Ensuring the correct amount of fuel is vital, a) to take off and B) too arrive. As a rule of thumb I double the distance and fill up accordingly. Not very scientific and I'm sure others will offer far better calculations. This can increase the tension of the mission dramatically as you watch the fuel slowly reduce to zero. Setting the weather to something other than clear also helps with the tension as you fight the elements, that coupled with the fuel situation and watching your altitude as you see your destination getting closer and fuel draining is great fun as you will your plane not to run out of fuel after flying for quite some time and not getting caught as you finally land with 1% fuel remaining.
August 16, 201213 yr I have done four of these in Alaska now and never had a problem. I have been using the Carbon Cub for these missions.
August 28, 201213 yr I've done a bunch of clandestine night missions in AK, especialy the Adak/Atka circuit. Don't know if this has already been mentioned in another thread, but.... That altitude restriction is bogus. I climb out in the Maule at 78 KIAS and level off above 10000 feet. The copilot complains and then shuts up. I head direct to the destination and start a full power descent at twenty miles out. Hardly ever see a LEO AI. One seemed to find me (in HI, actually, perhaps because I was less than 10000 feet above therrain). But I was bombing along at 10000 at 100%. The AI never got within a mile of me, and I opened on him when I began my high-speed descent. And once you're inside the five-mile checkpoint, the AI ignores you. Takes some of the challenge out of it, of course, but, as I used to hear in certain Navy flight situations, "If you ain't cheatin', you ain't tryin'." If you have the weather set to clear skies, you can set it and forget it, while Alt-Tabbing to other tasks.
September 11, 201213 yr Author I found another clandestine mission at Gustafson airport this morning. Started flying it, but something came up and I had to exit. I'll check it again when I get the chance. This is the first one I've seen here. Thank you. September 14, 201213 yr Author Found one at Kulik Lake this morning. So there are some at inland airports as well as the islands. Thank you. September 14, 201213 yr Author I went back to Kulik Lake to see if there was a clandestine there, but there wasn't. I tried the airport to the NW (can't remember the name) and it had one. I selected the job, and when it loaded I discovered I had selected the basic cub instead of the Deluxe. When I exited to restart the mission and select the proper a/c, the job had disappeared from the list. So, knowing I could always find one at Adak or Atka, I went there. Found one at Atka, selected the Maule and flew the job at 6000 ft. No sign of the law. Landed and was rewarded with my 2 ton badge and just over 27k points. I don't care about the points though. September 15, 201213 yr I always fly 'em at 10k rather than 6k. My rationale is that, for the few times I've encountered LEO AI, I have plenty of altitude to convert to speed. A Maule power-gliding at 250+ KIAS just walks away from the AI in the RV :-)!
September 15, 201213 yr Give it a try! As I'm sure 188AHC has discovered as well, the copilots will get all exercised when you bust 1000' AGL. Then a minute or so later into your climb you'll hear something like: Diffident female: "I think we may have been on radar for a bit too long." Nasty, whining male: "I have a bad feeling that we may have been on radar for too long." Laid back male: "They're not gonna like it if we were just exposed!" After that, they just keep quiet. And the amusing part is that, when hitting the five mile checkpoint in a high-speed descent from 10k' AGL, the laid back copilot says something like, "I wish I could have taken a nap, but all that low-level flying makes me too nervous."
September 15, 201213 yr Another one I`ve had is just after I had taken off the `Diffident Female' warned me that I was down to 10% gas and we should land and fill up - even though I still had 40% ! lol
