Best Place in the world to live?

Recommended Posts

Turbo -

I am not suggesting anything. The article was meant to illustrate how the welfare state is falling apart.

Since you celebrate collectivism, you will find that it was the collective / social policies of those on the left of the United States Government that triggered the recession. The US government (in the name of social justice) mandated banks to relax the lending policies, meaning that a person making just 35k/yr could get a mortgage loan of 400k.

Congress was persuaded to pressure the mortgage industry to provide loans to those it claimed it had been unjustly denied loans in the past – the poor, blacks, et.al. The mortgage companies were basically told to make loans with lower standards than in the past…or else. Loans were issued. Result? people defaulted on the loans.

This is what happens when the government intervenes in the private sector. So yes, it started in the U.S. under Bill Clinton (left-center government).

Fair enough. My point is that like rampart socialism, rampart capitalism just doesn't work. Yes, you are correct that Greece is a good pointer that too much socialism doesn't work, but capitalism is not without its flaws as well. I am also trying to point out that you might consider that a free at the point of use health service can work and can be of benefit to the vast majority.

Whereabouts in Ireland are you Ronan?

My first (and most fiery) wife was from Ballybofey in Co Donegal. I remember it as a most beautiful place - in the middle of nowhere, but at that time in the middle of trouble.

Now how do you spell pochine?

Cheers DB

From Galway (middle of now-where would also be a very good description of where I grew up), living in Dublin. The troubles have for the most part, stopped, hardly ever an incident, maybe once every 3-4 years now. Being from "The Independent Republic of Donegal", I'd imagine she was quite fiery haha. ^_^

Tis spelt Poitín. B)

It was 6:30am EST when you posted that Matthew (so even an hour or two earlier if he's central or west time)...

Btw DB thanks for trying to bring things back to the OP... just fwiw... the two major political parties here in the U.S. ... one just had it's nominating (cheerleading) convention and the other is taking place now... plus with the debt and some other issues and roughly 60 days to the election (with no other major diversions atm) politics a hot topic now.

That sounds about right....When winter in New Zealand and summer in USA it is 19 hours between New Zealand and Pacific Time Zone....In the summer in New Zealand and winter in USA it is only 21 hours between, which is actually just 3 hours difference in the daytime but minus a day.

Politics seems to be hot everywhere in the world as I was just reading a news report about the election in Quebec that was just won by the Parti Quebecois. During the victory speech their has been a shooting at the rally, very unusual for Canada. This sort of violence shouldn't happen during a peaceful democratic process.

Indeed I just heard about that, I hope the other victim is okay and recovers fully, as you say, a very unusual occurence, particularly for Canada. I never knew that Quebec was so serious about partition, guess you learn something new everyday...

When I first saw the title of this topic, I thought it was going to be a flight simmer asking what we all thought was the best VIRTUAL place to live on our planet. Boy, was I surprised.

On the many websites I go to that have forums, such a topic as this would have collapsed into a mud-slinging contest resulting in court ordered restraining orders by page 3. But this has remained a civil discourse about the different, real world countries we all live in. I thank all of the authors for fascinating information about their homes and even more, I thank the moderators for allowing this topic to continue.

To paraphrase TurboTomato, we all think our own country is the best place to live. The reasons we all think that way about our countries are too many too list. I will just say that I was born and raised in the USA and love it more than anywhere else that I have ever been to. It is not perfect by any means, but it is my home. People from other countries may knock our way of life, but they still come here for work, and still buy American products like Coke and Kentucky Fried Chicken in dozens of countries around the world. I have had the pleasure of making friends with pilots and ground crews from the UK and Italy who have come to Colorado to test helicopters here at high altitude. They have loved working here in the past and I hope they will continue to do so in the future.

We currently have a political and economic mess in America and it is not going to get better anytime soon. It is not the fault of any one political party, but the fault of all of them because the politicians forget that they should be representing Americans first and their political parties second. End of rant.

What is the best place in the world to live? Is it Ireland or New Zealand? Maybe it's Brazil or Canada. I haven't the slightest clue. I do know that where I live is pretty good. I suspect many other people here feel the same about their homes. That's all that really matters.

I never knew that Quebec was so serious about partition, guess you learn something new everyday...

Back in 1967 Canada was celebrating its 100th birthday and Montreal held Expo 67. One of the guests was French President Charles de Gaulle. He caused a political uproar when he made a speach to a crowd at Montreal City Hall exclaiming "Vive le Québec libre !" ("Long live free Quebec!")

Seperation started before that but that one event triggered a much bigger momentum. In the last Quebec referendum in 1995 the final vote was 49.42% "Yes" to 50.58% "No". This is how close Canada came to breaking apart.

EDIT: Great post Bill (Lifeguard911)

I think that apostrophes are not permitted in the names on shop façades in Québec as French doesn't use an apostrophe. It's probably a good idea (as a reminder of a people's national/racial heritage) but possibly a bit superficial, rather like bilingual spelling of road signs over here.

I suppose such a level of national pride and identity is a totally separate topic (so probably ok for this thread! )

Cheers,

D

Wow, that's so close. And is it that they want independence, or to be under French rule? Just opposed to the Queen of Britain being their head of state?

Reminds me of a time I was on a trip over in Canada, I was much much younger, only in my twenties or so, and we were staying in this hostel near Toronto, and we were sat with this group of similarly aged Canadians. So there we were just eating our dinners and chatting away, when one of the Canadians pipes up, "You know, Canada and Ireland have a lot in common", "I'm sure we do" responded one of my friends, to which the Canadian chap responded, "We have the same Queen as our head of state and all, our countries are practically brothers" - With that, all you could hear was the Irish contingent dropping their forks and knifes and spluttering with food in their mouth at this comment. The group of Canadians were just there looking confused as this group of Irish lads were there choking on their food before one of the lads declares, "We do NOT have the same Queen, We are an Independent Republic and have our own head of State thank you very much". To which the man replied, "Oh sorry, I didn't know.... So what's the name of your Queen then? " At which point half of us were in fits of laughter and the other half looking at this guy as if he had two heads, anyways, that's slightly off topic....

You'd wonder why the head of state of another country would get involved like that, and make a statement so politically divisive in a foreign country, oh well I suppose, what's done is done...
